Former Louisville Cardinals Women's Basketball star and WNBA player Shoni Schimmel was arrested in Oregon early Monday morning, and is facing felony charges of assault and criminal mischief, according to the Umatilla County sheriff's office. According to sources, Schimmel was arrested after a "violent incident"
Schimmel, who turned 29 in May, additionally faces misdemeanor charges of menacing, recklessly endangering another, harassment and domestic abuse. Her bail was set at $48,750. It has not been released yet on what exactly Schimmel did to be charged with the offenses.
Schimmel grew up on the Umatilla Reservation in Oregon and was featured in the 2011 documentary "Off the Rez," which is about her family and basketball career.
As a junior in 2013, Schimmel helped the Cardinals upset No. 1 seed and defending champion Baylor in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament on the way to the title game, where they fell to UConn.
Schimmel was picked No. 8 overall in the 2014 WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream, joining fellow Cardinals star Angel McCoughtry, and was the MVP of the All-Star Game that year. She played the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Dream, and was an All-Star both years.
She was traded to New York in 2016, and played 17 games that year for the Liberty before sustaining a season-ending concussion.
Schimmel sat out the 2017 season for personal reasons, then rejoined the Liberty in 2018. She was waived in training camp and then was signed by the Las Vegas Aces, playing two games before being released.
