Rick Pitino on Ray Spalding: ‘More potential’ than any Louisville player he’s had

Rick Pitino has posted an update on his blog following his team’s trip to Puerto Rico last week.

It’s mostly an update on what he’s doing with the Puerto Rican National Team he is helping to coach, but he added a couple notes on scouting reports for his Louisville players. Pitino had high praise for Drexel transfer Damion Lee — he should, Lee was terrific in Puerto Rico — but he says the rest of his roster still needs to improve.

There were two notes that I found interesting:

  • Pitino said freshman forward Ray Spalding has more potential that anyone he’s coached at Louisville, saying that his outgoing off-the-floor personality hasn’t translated onto the floor, where he’s not as aggressive or as confident as he needs to be. “I’ve not seen anyone in my 15 years at Louisville with more potential,” Pitino wrote. “Needs time, but when he gets it, look out!” I was far more intrigued by Louisville’s other two freshmen, Donovan Mitchell and Deng Adel, which seems to be a positive sign for this Louisville class.
  • The other interesting note is what Pitino wrote about Quentin Snider. “Had his ups and downs but will be ready! Don’t need to say anymore.” That’s it. Snider had some moments down the stretch of the season, but overall, he didn’t seem ready to handle running the point full-time. It doesn’t sound like he got there over the summer, either.

This is just coach being coach. He is always saying some over the top exaggeration about a player. I've grown used to it. At one time it bugged the hell out of me, but now I understand it's just a part of who he is. He exaggerates. A lot. He's never going to change that part of his personality.

Yep, didn't he say this about Adel a month ago?

Shaq Stone, Palacios the next Mashburn, Russ best player he's ever coached.... The beat rolls on...
Speaking of the beat rolls on...........

We are smack in the middle of UK football’s best part of the year – the pre-season. The hype is at an all-time high from the fans and we hear repeatedly that they are “bigger, faster, and stronger” than last season. Well, this ranking came out and no one can argue it. Kentucky football is 12th in the nation……….

...........in arrests.

You’ll probably be in good shape if/when you get into a debate with a Cayut fan about UofL being “Second Chance U”. The SEC is also well represented here as well, having 8 teams in the top 15.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but there are 10 SEC teams on that list Cardiotonic provided regarding arrests. That is astonishing.

Bunch of stats pointing to Cal being a better coach. Accept it, it's okay, you'll feel better when you do.

Edit: Red hole.
No, there are a bunch of stats pointing to him "having better recruiting resources". Admittedly, recruiting is a major part of being a college coach. No doubt Cal is a great college coach. Let's leave it at that or take the argument to another thread.
