Jawon played his ass off tonight and gave everything he had. His mistakes were all about effort and there is certainly honor in the way he played. Give ND credit. They were the better team but Coach Kelly needed a change of underwear 2 minutes before half. That was a team who was in the 4 team Playoff last year.

Let that resonate with what happened last year.

Go Cards.

What Puma giveth, Puma taketh away.

I think he is an emotional leader of this team. If he doesn't lead us down the field that first drive, we probably lose by 40 or 50.

But, he really is not a very good QB. Missed throws and multiple fumbles. Still not very accurate.

And judging by the offense tonight we ran this evening, Malik is just the perfect fit for what we are running.

Perhaps but, you’ve got to believe that there was a reason that Pass got the nod as the starter over Cunningham. I know Malik got injured in camp but the word was that Pass was ahead of him at that point.

Definitely a tricky situation for CSS - you don’t want to repeat the yo-yo crap that Petrino used last year but, you have to win games. I think the next two weeks are the key for Pass - if he is not significantly sharper / better against EKU & WKU then you make the permanent switch to Malik.

Agree 100%

Obviously I don’t want to be critical of the young man. He kept us believing in the first half although most of that was with his legs. If he were a FR or SOPH I would be somewhat more optimistic but he is a RS JR. He average 4 yds a pass and had 3 fumbles, while missing several targets beyond 10 yards badly. During the 2nd half he started reverting back to last year when he ran he should passed and when he passed he might have run. The decision making is not where it needs to be. I have confidence though that Satterfield will improve that aspect or he will make any necessary changes. Overall it was great to see electricity back in the stadium! Go Cards!

I was wondering if CSS was going to put Malik in during the 4th quarter but I thought is was better that he didn’t. The thing that bothers me about Malik is that he tries to do to much by himself and it makes us one dimensional. With Pass in the game we have more players involved I hope he will continue to progress and by mid season we are a much better team.

Pass never starts next year IMO. He may not start all of this year. I really pull for him but the kid can’t seem to get out of his own way. Some QB’s don’t give away 3 fumbles in two years.

I totally agree. I think Malik fits better with what Coach Sat. Wants you run. After those first two runs for scores Puma seemed to miss read where the open spots where. I think Malik has a little Lamar in him as to where he nows where to run to and after that it's a foot race. Can you imagine Malik, TuTu, and Hall all in on the same play?

At least a couple times, Pass was the first on the field congratulating the D last night.

Ironic someone mentioned the "drops" against Bama last year. Then, a bunch of drops last night.

Maybe JP is babying the ball because he has no more confidence in them....than some do him?

My only criticism of our starting QB is what appears to be a lack of mental toughness. He doesn't seem to respond well to adversity or maybe he was just trying too hard and got in his own way? IDK. The back to back fumbles late in the first half really killed the momentum and appeared to kill his confidence too.

We really need for him to live up to his billing though. He was a solid 4 star recruit out of HS. He has the size and weight and we see glimpses of his talent. He needs to be mentally tougher to reach his potential.

The 1st fumble was just bad luck after a really good move. The 2nd and 3rd fumble were the game. The running game was really good which he was a big part of.

Passing game was terrible and frankly a huge concern. He is not very accurate and he doesn’t seem comfortable in the pocket. He isn’t throwing people open or leading his receivers. A lot of the pass breakups were because of the ball placement.

Not every 4 star lives up to the billing. Some are just a miss. Pass was a 4 star based on his size and athleticism. What can't be gauged is how they will react mentally to the type of competition they get in P5 football.

Can’t stand Puma’s basic passing fundamentals. Not a QB guru but something is amiss. He often looks like he’s aiming the ball like he’s throwing darts not a football.

Guys, if you haven’t watch the ALL ACCESS Louisville, it’s pretty interesting. Some of the skill sessions are throwing the football into nets. The QB coach commends Pass if he just just hits the screen let alone the nets. In the meantime Malik was dropping dimes.

I agree. I also think Pass has a lot more than what’s been shown so far. If he can find his grove, he can be a very good if not a great Quarterback. He already has everything you could ask for with his size and skill set and has this year and next. I’d say next year he’ll be a beast and be hard to stop. Not saying he can’t this year, but he hasn’t had much time in this system and still has to get rid of some bad habits from last year.

I hope they at least give him a few more games and he sees that they believe in him, he’ll get better and better this year. Besides a couple mental mistakes last night, I thought he looked pretty impressive. Football is tough sport, but he seems like a tough kid. I do think he fits in this system very well and he could be dangerous by the end of the year. Like you said, you just never really know.

Pass is a redshirt junior and not a first year guy. He doesn't have the skills that should be innate. His lack of accuracy can't be all coaching. You wonder how much personal time he devoted to becoming a good QB.

Do you think with this new staff he can find something to get him going? Maybe it’s too late for him, but stranger things have happened. I did think he looked more into the game and composed, especially in the first half. Maybe it was just a bad experience for him under the previous staff and he wasn’t having any fun. I’m not trying to sell you on him or anything because I know you’ve seen him a lot more than me, but I really do think he could turn it around, I’m definitely with you though and time is running out for him. Thanks

I think this staff is the best thing that could have happened for him. He's got to be better than 12 for 27. If this staff can get him to be an average to good QB this will be an exciting season.

If Atwell doesn't drop a perfectly thrown TD early in the game the QB's passing stats look a little better. OTOH, I think they need to continue getting Atwell the ball on short routes, his YAC skill could be a boon to whoever is throwing to him.

What I am interested to see as the year progresses are a few things.

Will Pass take a step forward, or will Malik take over at some point? What will other QB stats look like against ND and that front 4?

Yep - Howard would have already moved him to TE

If the 5 (at least) drops were caught his percentage would have been 63% and at least another 60-80 yds and a TD.

A totally different stat line.

I think he’s aiming the ball TRYING to “help” them catch it.

Some of our receivers are looking at careers as DBs.

From my angle most of his passes were behind the receivers.

May have been.

But if the five, in their hands, drops don’t happen he still hits 63%.

I agree he needs to be better, and may not be our answer. But to lay ALL the blame on him is a bit over the top IMO.

Again, we had a ton of drops against Bama last year. But nobody’s dogging our receivers.

I would give him plenty of time to prove himself in this system. He played OK against against a pretty good defense. Now he played OK against Alabama too. What can’t happen is against EKU is regression. He has to improve due to competition. He needs confidence.

He threw it to the right receivers for the most part. He just wasn’t accurate. That isn’t an easy fix.

I agree. I swear he looked a lot better than 12 for 27. Lol. Maybe it’s that he could take off and run if needed or whatever. Anyway, ND was a tough bunch of players and a top ten team easy, maybe top five, and I thought UofL beat them pretty good in a few areas. It’s a great start and definitely something to build on.

As for Pass, if he just hits five more passes, his and Louisville’s night looks a lot better. ( I know about those ifs), lol I don’t really know why, but I’ve just got a great feeling that Pass is actually having fun now and could really take off. Lol. I just like that kid I guess. He seems like a real good kid and has all the god given talent in the world. I hope it happens for him.

Thanks for the reply. Ohh yeah. I agree about this staff being good for him. I think it’s the best thing in the world for him. A lot of room for excitement I must say.

That's literally not what happened at all.

I think he is referring to Malik dropping dimes. Ponce told all of them to go get their own ball if they missed the screen. I remember telling little league kids to do the same in baseball. Go get own ball if you can’t hit the glove.

Ponce was not happy. Now Malik may fit this offense better since it is designed to get the ball out quick. He doesn’t need a cannon.

I had no problems with the way Pass played on Monday night. I would like to have the fumbles back, and he missed some reads, but he was also making nice throws and commanding the offense. He can clean up a few things, but give him time. He has EKU and WKU to prove his worth and solidify his position as starter.
