Peter is not up for the job

I see nothing on his resume that suggests he is a DC, linebacker coach, maybe.
His connection to petrino, or more plainly - his ability and willingness to work for petrino are what got him the job. It’s a small pool from which to pull.

At this rate, in 3-4 years the only people on staff will be blood relatives, in-laws and guys who can trace their coaching roots back to Montana.

Most flaccid defense ever.

So how do we know if put our same fishing line back in the same pond, we'll pull out a bigger fish?

I wasn't a fire-Grantham guy, but I understand the process we have to work with. You'd best try to give Sirmon and Petrino (more) time to figure some things out, get players healthy, and recruit to their needs...

I can give Sirmon a pass on recruiting.

But this is year four for Bobby's needs. Time is not on his side.

How much more vanilla do you want to see

Petrino is in yr 8 at UofL, 13 yrs of being an overall HC and he's coaching like he's an interim. He's stealing money. Enough.

The team was set up for 11, 12 wins and they couldnt even beat NC St.
New Coach

Hey sirmon

If Petrino fires Sirmon after this year, he's officially waving the white flag of surrender... "I don't know WTH I'm doing and just plugging a new guy in and hoping to improve."

Not something I expect to see or hear...

This team was clearly not set up for 10-11 wins, pre-season expectations should never be held against coaches. Every year is different.

Why would this fan base think this defense would be good? The same defensive unit, minus 3 or 4 really good college players, was torched the last 3 games of the season. The same secondary was torched against UK who had a below average offense at home. Then comes a coaching change which always has a transition phase. Why in the world would anyone expect this team to be good defensively? I understand hoping the would be good but expecting them to be good is on the fan.

The real question should be is Petrino the right guy to run the program? I don't know that answer today, but we will see if the team improves over the next several week? Bottom line this an average team right now.

I want to key in on your next to last sentence about seeing improvement. When does that start? Should have started last year after losing to Houston. Said we would do it before the bowl game against LSU. Now it seems we say it after every game.

Reiterating my statement from 3 weeks ago:

I think Sirmon is doing the best he can. He's not a great defensive mind. I'm not going to get angry at an average guy doing an average job in a very difficult division. This is all Bobby and to some degree Tom. I think Bobby was brought back as it was a relatively safe option considering the alternatives at the time (or at least one where the risks could be offset). We needed stability at the helm as we moved into the ACC, not a coach that would blow the doors off for 2-3 years then jump ship again.
Bobby has been exactly that without any of the upside (nor downside to his credit). We are an 8-5 or 9-4 team. That's it....it's all we are ever going to be with BP. 10-3 at our best and a 6-7 at our worst but there's the range, you can write it down. Last year was the golden year, got a Heisman, but that bump bump bump we all felt at the end of last year was the ceiling. He's lost a step on offense, still can't help on the defensive side, maybe a step better on recruiting (arguable considering other factors).

The hiring of Sirmon showed clearly that he doesn't have what it takes to really DEVELOP a program on the long term (see Dabo/Jimbo).

So where does that leave you and I? Take what we got as we don't make the calls

We're in for at least another 3-4 losses so just accept it and move on. Getting angry only works against you.

Ummm - how again does Jurich bear responsibility for petrino running Grantham off and replacing him with this jabroni?

He hired BP as he was a safe option....he was never a good defensive coach so we all kinda knew what we were getting (a safe above average team). If you want this program to achieve the next tier you are going to have to go out there and get a top tier coach or take a risk on someone that's the next big thing.

Vance Bedford is available. Although I don’t think anybody can do anything with our secondary.

I understand partially where you’re coming from - moving into the ACC Jurich needed a known quantity and petrino (at a reduced rate) fit the bill. There are plenty of HC who specialize on one side of the ball or the other but most are smart enough to hire top flight coaches to shore up their weaknesses.

The only way that Jurich could conceivably be lumped into the sirmon hire is that he gave petrino (as he does with all of his coaches) the autonomy to choose his assistants. Petrino couldn’t coexist with Grantham and so Grantham had to go. It’s 1,000,000% on petrino that he settled on someone so mediocre.

The only other thing that I’d quibble with is that I don’t think petrino has provided a “safe” option at any stop he ever been at. My guess is that we’ll be reminded of that sooner rather than later.

He can recruit and we know he can run a defense. One thing for sure those guys will tackle and play aggressive. I’m good with that.

I'm not sure the pool of defensive coordinators that can co-exist with Petrino is that long. Obviously Grantham and Petrino butted heads. At Arkansas, the first defensive coordinator Petrino hired - Ellis Johnson - left to go back to USCjr after only a couple months on the job. Petrino's d-coordinator during his first stint at UofL has had no coordinator positions since his tenure at UofL and in fact works for Jeff Brohm now in a non-coaching role.

So, I would argue that the majority of any blame would fall at Petrino's feet although Jurich certainly would've known that Petrino is not the easiest to work for. Quite frankly, that's why they had to overpay for Grantham and now they are overpaying for Sirmon.

If we pay sirmon anything then ya were overpaying him. We NEED to get him on the kragthorpe contract where we pay him to NOT coach our team.. I'd be fine with that lol
