Orange Bowl Question

I know that if we win out, there's a pretty good chance we'll play in it, my question is, if we do, who would we play, the loser of Georgia/Florida or am I wrong about that?

The options are someone from the SEC, Big Ten or Notre Dame. Of course, since we already played the Irish, it would not be them.

After the top 4 teams are picked for the CFP, the Sugar Bowl picks their teams from the SEC and the Big 12, and the Rose Bowl picks their teams from the Big Ten and PAC-12. The Orange Bowl picks their team from the ACC and then selects the highest ranked team between Notre Dame, the SEC or the Big Ten.

Using the current ESPN FPI as an example to fill out the New Years Six games, you would get this:

In the college football playoff:
#1 Ohio State versus #4 LSU
#2 Alabama versus #3 Clemson

Rose Bowl: #5 Penn State versus #9 Oregon
Sugar Bowl: #6 Georgia versus #7 Oklahoma
Orange Bowl: #8 Auburn versus #33 Virginia
Cotton Bowl: #10 Wisconsin versus #18 UCF

Push:
Is it possible the UofL gets the Virginia spot in that scenario? Would we have to run the table? What about Pitt (which sucks)?

Wake and UVA will most likely run the table so they would both remain higher than us ranking wise. I think Music City is our best bet.

It’s possible. I just used the ESPN computer to give an example, but the spots will be awarded by the committee. Assuming Clemson wins out, whichever ACC team is ranked the highest by the committee on December 1st will get the Orange Bowl bid.

Wake still has to play Clemson. Don’t see them winning. If they lose and we win out, we have the tie breaker against them in conference play. I think though they would have a better overall record but I think the Bowls have some discretion on who would bring more fans (at least they should).

Orange Bowl selection goes either to the ACC champion or the Bowl committee’s highest ranked replacement. Tie breakers, discretion and fan support only play into it to the extent that the Bowl selection committee considers those things when they rank the 2nd best team in the ACC.

I forgot Wake plays Clemson.
And UVA would too if they win their division and play them in the ACCG.

Wake still has to play Clemson. UVa still has, I think VT, which is playing better of late. We could still make the OB but we’ll need some help and we have to run the table, which starts in Miami, where we are a 5 point dog.

Orange Bowl: #8 Auburn versus #33 Virginia

Pathetic. Embarrassing. No one is going to watch that game if it actually happens. The 'Murican and the old Big East are/were heads and shoulders above this crap conference. I acknowledge that Louisville is coming out of a down period and is part of the problem, but come on.

If the team that won it last time, and hasn’t lost a game since, is left out then this thing is as big a joke as the old AP NC.

And ANY argument against making it an eight team playoffs goes right out the window.

But if CU loses, they’re toast.

This is probably the saving grace here - the other teams play real schedules and someone is going to lose, while Clemson sleepwalks through the rest of the crap conference. Crap scenario: Alabama loses to LSU and falls back, and Clemson beats some crap team and jumps up to get in the Top 4. Their main challenge is going to be staying awake the rest of the way.

I agree. But.....

what happens to the mainstream thought if CU gets back in...and the nothing team from the nothing conference, Pimp slaps everybody all the way to a bak-2-bak NC? ;);)

Regardless "who" they play, there's a TON of talent on that team, and they should be relatively healthy.

A 2 loss Wake Forest will get the Orange Bowl assuming Clemson wins out. Virginia already has three losses and would have another in the ACC championship game so they will not jump WF in that scenario.

The only game WF might realistically lose besides to Clemson is this week at Virginia Tech. Their other remaining games are Duke and Syracuse.

Wake was #19 in the first committee rankings last night. They were the only other team from the ACC besides Clemson in the rankings. They certainly have the inside track for the NY6 bid if they can win 3 of 4 and play a competitive game against Clemson.

I already think there is no argument against an 8 team tournament.

That's laughable. I'm not talking crap about them, but seriously WF lost to a Louisville team that has no depth and went 2-10 last year. I'm proud of the Cards for what they have done this year and especially their heart & effort and the joy they have playing. It's remarkable. If Louisville wins this Saturday I would argue they are the 2nd best team in the ACC. But Louisville winning these games says as much about the ACC being bad as it does about Louisville improving. I mean they lost to FSU, a team so bad that they FARRRR'd that sonofabeyitch midseason. So if WF goes to a NY6 bowl they are going to get flat-out lernt a good'n.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Wake Forest beats a highly ranked SEC team in the Orange Bowl. I remember sitting in the Super Dome and watching a 23rd ranked Louisville team which had lost to UConn and Syracuse in November destroy 4th ranked Florida.

If we were to win out and Wake lose to Clemson in the same fashion we did, then UofL should be ranked higher if the committee does its homework.

Don't you remember, FLA sleepwalked through that game. Didnt really want to play a team like UofL! Only wanted a big time team so they could get up for it. And so on and so forth........

I disagree. We would have three losses and they would have two. They would have lost to Clemson at Clemson while we lost to them at home. They would finish higher than us in the conference. While we won the head to head contest we only won by two points. I don’t think that would be enough to get the nod over them.

Their strength of record, which is supposed to be a strong component of rankings would fall short of ours. Their nonconference schedule is Elon, Rice and Utah State. We would at least have a nonconference win over a bowl eligible P5 team. We would be tied in conference standings each with two losses. We won head to head at their place. It’s likely that our crossover win will be over the Coastal champ UVA. Basically we’d be penalized for losing to Notre Dame team that will likely have 10 wins and will likely finish in top 10 of playoff rankings.

I argued this two weeks ago.

Before we played them our schedule was ranked 20+ Over theirs.

We’ve lost to two top +/-top tens, and early to a poor but talented FSU. And beat them at their place.

I’d say if we could win out we’ll be getting a lot more “talk” than WF just because of the improbability of us doing it.

Maybe we pass them.

You will see a lot of shifting through the month of November as schools ravages each other in head to head competition. Louisville has a lot to play for this month. Your success hasn't surprised me this year. Your school hired an excellent coach and your team suffered from poor coaching last year. Congratulations.
