One that we will remember for a long time.

Congrats to coach Satterfield and all the players. Malik Cunningham is the ultimate competitor and was able to get his troops to takeover when he couldn’t when the game was on the line.

One of the best in Louisville Football history and one that all of us Cards fans will never forget,
I mean not to be a dick but, wut? A by the fingertips win vs a G5 team with a new HC at home is “one of the best in Louisville Football history”?? IMO that just shows how downtrodden our fan base is at this point.

I do get that but if you don’t get what that win means at this time and the quality of the opponent then that’s on you.

The G5 quote is telling that you’re not sure what you are looking at. UCF was ranked in the Top 10 last year and has NFL talent on both sides of the field with most of their team back and that definitely has us in comparison behind them. If you want to go to the recruiting thread fine but until then,

Enjoy.

Just got back to my home in Cincinnati. I really considered bagging it this afternoon and just staying here and watching on tv. There was a bad wreck on 275 in NKY that added an hour to the trip down. I was miserable the whole way down. Then, after a terrible start, one of the most exciting back and forth games I ever saw. And to top it off a finish for the ages. A freaking freshman linebacker!!!!
The drive back was a joy.

This isn’t last year - though to be accurate, last year UCF went 6-4 and was never ranked in the top 10. The fact that you recognize that UofL is “definitely… behind” ucf, is an example of how negative the trajectory of the program is under satterfield. Would ucf be picked to win or challenge for either division of the ACC?

Nope.

So while it was a much needed win, to suggest it’s one of the best in the program’s history seems giddy and misplaced.

If we want to view it in historical context, I’d say it ranks right up there with the 41-38 win over Rutgers in 2007. That was a feel good moment too but, that didn’t change the trajectory of the program then anymore (I’m afraid) than last night did.

This is what happens when you come to play. Not necessarily the win,but competing to be in the game in the 4th quarter.
Congrats Cards!!

It's good to be analyzing the weight of wins instead of weight of losses.

UCF has finished ranked 5 times in the last decade, 3 of those inside the top 11. They came into town a hair out of the T25.

I won't take it as far to say one of the best wins ever, nor is it in the neighborhood of Rutgers 2007, as that program at that time of the game being played only had 1 good team in the prior 10 year look back and was pretty much a dumpster fire in 8 of the 10 years looking back from 1997-2007.

So for the argument between the OP and Ghost the truth is somewhere in-between IMO.

It is fine to disagree, I'm not sure the program is going to be okay with SS, nor am I sure he's around much longer for one reason or another, which I've been thinking for awhile now.

Fans I guess gonna remain torn Rollem was correct when he pointed that out somewhere on this board.

Some fans want to feel good about the program others maybe not. Fans that want to feel good will be optimistic looking forward and may think Ole Miss is a T10 team and these Cards aren't so bad. They will say this team might be able to win more games than we thought in the ACC after watching the first couple games.

Fans that are down on the program will still point to the deficiencies and call last night not all that big of a deal, maybe consider it lucky, or more of a fluke than progression. They will point to the ACC being terrible. Which it probably is. This means if the program doesn't do well in this year's ACC, the team is still in bad shape and the program is still down. If the team does win more than expected in the ACC defense mechanism built in, the ACC sucks anyway. This is a safer position to take because you're gonna be right no matter how the season turns out LOL!

Gonna take advice from some other posters and see how it plays out.

I’m going to eat some crow by saying although we started slow, CSS opened the playbook and Malik showed me as much courage as TB when he played hurt. What I think impressed me more was the intensity of our D and it seemed like we had more speed than I witnessed in the previous 2 games. Bottom line is a saw a big improvement, which is what I needed to see and it does give me optimism going forward.

Hey BPGhost. 1 down and 1 more to go for that steak dinner. :p ;)

Hope springs eternal in the hopeful. And it can be contagious I hear.

Cards played hard but imperfectly....and were save by some extreme luck at the end.

Seriously, how dumb was Malzahn (to our benefit) in calling that pass play when he still had what 2 TO's in his pocket (?) and they were gutting us up the middle? Don't get me wrong....teams make their own luck and I am grateful that Alderman could run 66 yards for the TD without falling down or running out of gas. Testament to the young mans heart and spirit making the best of his one and only play in the game. Stories that legend are made out of.

That decision to pass by UCF reminded me a whole lot of Petrino's decision to pass against FSU in that terrible 2 and 10 season. Just doesn't make sense. Killed us then, helped us last night.
Thats CFB in a nutshell. Some coaches just try to be too darn smart for their own britches.

Wonder how the UCF fans feel about now?

I guess they could have fumbled instead? The pass wasn't that bad. The receiver should of caught it even though it was a tad behind him. The Coach had confidence his star QB would make the play. It's just one of those fluke plays that happen in football. Now running it back for a TD was talent all the way.

The irony was that there were no turnovers by either team the whole game. Then both teams end up throwing interceptions due to deflections with less than a minute to go in the game. It was a very exciting game and with us winning made it more fun. I liked the fact that we opened the playbook and I wished we would have done it with Ole Miss.

I was also impressed that a lot of big plays were being made by freshmen. Braden Smith, Jordan Watkins, Alderman are all freshmen and Mitchell is listed as a RS freshmen. If go to our current roster we are loaded with freshmen and sophomores. I would love to see us continue to progress and get better and keep the same playbook that we used last night and throw away the playbook used for the Ole Miss game.

While I won‘t place it so high in “historical“ significance, I certainly feel it was one of the most memorable games and environments in recent memory. If you were AT the sparsely attended game, you know what I mean. It was fun and exciting as hell; the game going back with really well executed creative plays, and just when we thought we had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with our only turnover, fortune FINALLY shined on our CARDS with UCF‘s only turnover of the game. As far as pure anxiety and excitement, the finish to this game probably does rank in the Top 10 of MY 50 years of being a Card fan. If you can’t take simple joy in that, I suggest an appointment with a cardiologist. My heart sure was jumping out of my chest in that last minute of play.

Looks like we still have some "nattering nabobs of negativism" even though some other fans are about to jump on the "train that's coming". I'm on the train.
Who gives a shit what you think? It’s a shame you were banned from the Yuts site - now you’re here even more frequently.

Wow! I am not a Cats fan, don't go on their site at all. I was trying to reference the old Schnelly comment about negative fans as well as Bedford's comment about the improvement that is coming. I think at least a little more optimism is warranted after the way the team competed last night, but if you don't agree, then ok. And I haven't posted much lately until last nights game.

I totally agree.UCF is just a few years removed from an undefeated season. They have an explosive offense and the fact that our guys didn’t quit says something.I have to admit I was just about to turn off the TV right before the pick six,but I stuck around.

It was a the biggest game Satterfield has had since his arrival. Historically too early to say how big, but that could be the game that brings everything together. Games can change seasons but they can also change programs. We shall see. I will say from a pure joy factor it is way up there.

As fans we care more how we look than the end result. The Ole Miss game everyone freaked out but the reality appears to be Ole Miss legit. UCF with their QB is a good team this was a solid win. Louisville still has issues and can lose to anyone if they don’t come in ready. FSU will not be easy.

A loss would have probably sent the program to a disasterous season. No guarantee the team builds on the win we will know in about a month.

The UK board melted down over Malhzan throwing the ball instead of gashing us with the run and kicking the game winning FG as time expired.

NC Card: we both can agree on your comment about “wanting to see improvement”. I had hoped for a win Friday night, but while I avoid making predictions, I will confess that I did not expect to see us beat UCF, given what we witnessed in Atlanta, or last week’s win over EKU.

There was definite improvement, and I do believe this staff made adjustments on both sides of the football. I still believe this is a very young UL football team that could improve every week based just on seeing these talented underclassmen getting more snaps. Alderman may have been fortunate to be in position to catch the deflected pass, but his return to the end zone was evident of his talent and composure. Some of the freshman are demonstrating their ability to contribute when given the chance.

Fun win and memorable? Oh year!
One of the best in history? Heck no!

We have Fiesta, Orange, and Sugar Bowl wins. We have the 2002 & 2016 FSU wins. Miami & WVU in 2006. Cincy & Rutgers in 2012. Miami in 2014. Notre Dame in 2014.

Fun game and all, but a win over a decent unranked mid-major isn't going to be an all-time game. Great memory and great win, but remember where we've been guys.

I believe this game and the way we won, came at a critical time for everyone involved. In other words....Damn, we needed that in the worst way to look back into where we've been.

This wins place in history will be determined by how the rest of the season goes. This was a DESPERATELY needed win at a DESPERATELY needed time for the fans, for the players, for the program and for Satterfield. So if Friday's game propels the team forward the rest of the year and they win a bunch of games, recruiting picks up and the program starts to rise - then this win will be looked at as the catalyst.

In my opinion this was a huge win for several reasons. Number one is that our opponent was a huge favorite (7 points) in OUR house. We were a well prepared and coached team versus a well coached and prepared team. Our young players now understand what being prepared with a good attitude means week in and week out. No one in CFB would have been surprised if we had lost this game, but now they have to realize that we can be a force for the balance of our schedule.

GO CARDS!!!

PH: totally agree; the UCF win was major! Coming into Friday night’s game, UCF was a lot more than “just decent”, and the timing of that win places it in a very high category for UL.

No it was not a major Bowl game like the Sugar or Fiesta, but it took place at a time when UL needed an upset to begin changing the narrative with our fans and local media.

There were a lot of folks who went to that game who are saying it was the best UL football experience they can recall in a longtime; that says a whole lot.

This UCF fan was pretty distraught! To have that pick six in the waning moments of the game was heart-breaking! But a little background here - we can go 11-1 on a season, but guess which game I'll attend? Rarely fails. We'd thrashed Pitt at home 45-14 in 2018, and I was expecting much the same when I traveled to Pittsburgh in 2019. That game was much tighter, and Pitt had gone toe to toe with us. Still, with seconds left, we led 34-28...but Pat Narduzzi drew up a trick play (now called the "Pitt Special") in which they ran an end around, as the Quarterback dashed to the end zone and caught the winning TD! Pitt wins 35-34. The game at Louisville felt much the same way. After we intercepted late, all we had to do was move the ball 20 yards to maybe win it with a FG.

With our stud running back, Isaiah Browser, going down with a deep knee bruise in the very first series, we didn't have that option to get into position. Gabriel zipped his pass to Johnson too hot, bouncing off his pads into the waiting hands of your LB. Game over. But wait - there were a few seconds left to try that desperation sand lot lateral thing ( that works maybe once in a hundred attempts), and in that trash play, Dillon Gabriel goes down with a season-ending broken collarbone? Too much!

Despite my frustration and disappointment, losing that way, your Cards played to win. We KNEW we had to contain Cunningham, but our guys bit on every juke and head fake, time and again. Fool us once, shame on you - fool us 10 times, shame on us! Plus, our secondary was again abysmal. Not a good recipe for success.

Hats off to Malik. Playing through obvious pain, he showed what he's made of, and he is a true gamer. Couldn't slow him, and I believe Louisville will win its share this season. In summary, while it was tough to lose the way we did, Louisville deserved the W for answering the bell and playing 60 minutes of solid football. Congrats and good luck the rest of the season!

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed your time in The Ville...other than the game itself. It WAS one hell of a game, played at an extremely high level...minus the last minute of the game. Teams just drawing up and executing solid, and sometimes very creative, play after play. It's a shame someone had to lose that game. Best wishes moving forward with your season.

I will be at St. Pete beach this coming Saturday for a week. I'll be watching the game with FSU fans I'm sure. At my age I'll have to control myself so I won't get my ass kicked. :)

I had not heard that Gabriel is out for the season. I hope that isn’t true.

GKnight: Congratulations on the P5 entrance in Big 12; you guys deserve it and I will be pulling for you the rest of the way. UCF came in here a few years back with Bortles and clipped our wings 38-35 with 23 seconds to go, broke our hearts.
