Just a few random takeaways from the first round of the NFL draft:
- I made a (horrible) joke on Twitter that had to do with the Browns and how they should draft a punter because that is figuratively all they will do with whoever they manage to pick... The sad thing is that my humor ended up being fairly accurate, at least in my opinion. Baker Mayfield is NOT someone who I would build a franchise around and the #1 overall pick is meant to do just that. To me, Mayfield is just a less talented Johnny Manziel.
- Speaking of building a franchise around, Saquon Barkley was the guy to do that with in this year's draft so the Giants really benefited here. Nobody is a surefire pick, but Barkley was as close as they come and we have seen the value in recent years of drafting a stud RB (Gurley, Fournette, Elliott, etc.).
- As a lifelong Packers fan I couldn't be happier that the Pack ended up taking Jaire Alexander. I was thinking he would go in the 15-20 range but I didn't think the Packers were going to be the recipient.
- The Falcons taking Calvin Ridley to go along with Julio Jones is straight fire.
- At least the Ravens drafted Lamar in the first round, but now with Flacco, RG3, and Jackson on the roster is not the way I would operate if I was a NFL GM.
