Red Shirt, Green Shirt, Grey Shirt....now Blue Shirt rules.
(sounds like Dr. Seuss does it not?)
So, to try and get us all up to speed, here are the definitions as I understand them. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.
Red Shirt : (this is the easy one) a player postpones a year of eligibility
(either as a freshman or because of injury), giving them 5-years to
play 4-years of eligibility.
Green Shirt : (relatively new) a
High-School senior who passes on their spring high school semester to
register in college a semester early; gaining early eligibility.
Grey Shirt : a kid who signs a letter of intent (say February in football),
but does not enroll in the school until the following full spring
semester. (i.e. January)
now we have ANOTHER new term
Blue Shirt : (as I understand it) This is a new rule interpretation from
last October where a kid can sign financial papers to attend a school
early, (say in August), but is NOT bound to go to that school until he
signs a national LOI in February. It DOES however, bind the school to
the kid. (Meaning the school cannot pull the scholarship offer).
Basically then, a kid can sign a financial aid agreement with their
school of choice as early as August, if they plan to enroll in that
school in January. And that kid is not counted in that year's class of
recruits. Which may be a way around the whole 25 recruits per class
restriction. Because that kid would count against the last year's
total.
All of the sudden the cartoon onomatopoeia of "yaddata, yaddata, yaddata" comes to mind trying to keep up with all of this.
