We had all summer to select a QB, put together a game plan that fits his strengths, and go with it.

We appear to be headed towards starting our 3rd different QB... in week 3.

That's not something you see anywhere else in the country.

Be somewhat funny if, Bolin is benched for Gardner, then Will is the starter for the
Samford game. Wouldnt it............

The issue to me is they have lost their identity on offense. They are trying to adapt their offense to their personnel. Petrino isn't a read option specialist. He may of had that in his playbook but it wasn't his play book. I guess they think with challenges on the line they have to go down this path.

Well, from the comments during camp,I wouldn't have been surprised if Bolin had started last week. Most accurate passer that had a much better grasp of the offense than last season.I also thought other than that delayed middle blitz(which was meant to destroy what a true pocket passer does) the offensive line protected him well.Hmmm.....

What The Cycle said is what I have been thinking after watching both games, that this team has no identity especially on offense.

It might be time to make Bolin the full time starter and get back to Petrino-ball. Doesn't mean you can't have packages for Lamar and Reggie but maybe the offensive line would benefit from a more defined game plan.

I agree 100%. Throughout fall camp, coaches talked about what they "needed" in a starting quarterback: accuracy, good decision making, knowledge of the offense, competitor, trust.

I immediately thought Will or Kyle. I discounted Will, to an extent, due to his injuries. I was sure we would see Kyle vs Auburn. After all, he had thrown for 388 yds and 301 yds in his previous 2 games, and was said to possess all the attributes outlined by Coach Petrino.

The media and talk show hosts kept saying Bonnafon, mostly because our o-line was "inept", and we needed his "ability to make plays".

What we got vs Auburn was "deer in the headlights". Substituted by an exciting freshman, who outside of his athleticism, isn't accurate, doesn't make good decisions (yet) and doesn't know the offense. A little bit contradictory of what they said they "needed" in a starting QB.

**Interesting, how the O-Line with all its "faults" seemed to protect and run block pretty good for 3 series late in the game vs Houston. It also seemed that a particular QB was also able to move in the pocket and get out of trouble**

A QB carousel or controversy isn't a good thing. It's not good for the team. It causes dissension. It's not good for recruiting. It creates doubt about the style of play and consistent coaching.

In the brief time we've seen these guys this year, our only success has been when the opposing defense goes against a QB they were NOT expecting. Sorry, but that's not a good observation for a pick-one-and-stick-with-him strategy...

Using deception, or an element of surprise as the backbone for success is nothing more than a gimmick that cannot be sustained in the long run.

And, in this case, there's been no real success to speak of either, as the team is 0-2 with one of the losses being a game we were a 13 pt favorite to win.

But hey I do appreciate you sticking to the topic unlike SOME PEOPLE!!!!

I'm not sure the element of surprise is what I'd rely on either. But we may have a situation where one QB will work better than another for a given opponent.

These QBs seem to get along well and are supportive of one another. Just because conventional thinking is "pick one" wouldn't guide my thinking if I felt there was a better approach.

And if anyone can carry that off, it's Petrino. Looking back, the mistake we have made is not picking the right QB each week...

The continuity overall isn't going to be there with musical chairs at QB. The changes result in false starts, uncertainty, and it tells you whatever game plan the staff has entering the game has been given up on.

It's just not the way to go.

I said it in another thread, and I will say it here. When Kyle Bolin came in, it looked like the Bobby Petrino football we used to see. Bolin's big smile, energy and downfield vision reminded me of LeFors, with Micky Crum reminding me of Gary Barnidge.

I don't think he has had a choice he has had to replace the starter. The opposing defense is dictating the change. They are able to execute their defensive game plan. That is very unusual for a Petrino offense his offense is usually the dictates the game. To his credit he has made the right choice in each game.

I think that's another great point... Petrino hasn't been able to exert his will, so to speak, over an opposing defense as we fondly recall in the past. What he HAS been able to do now in three of the last four games is change the QB and be successful, almost instantly.

The question is WHY? You can't say it's the type of offense because that hasn't been consistent. Jackson against Auburn doesn't play like Bolin against LPT or Houston.

If you guys wanna really rack your brains on something worthwhile, try that issue...

If Petrino was getting the most out of the QB position he possibly could be getting he would not have to make changes during games at the QB position. He would have the QB that gives us the best chance to win the game on the field throughout the game.

The offensive line's limitations are keeping BP and Garrick McGee from doing a lot of things that we were used to seeing from previous Petrino teams. Even last year with a better but still average O-line we were not a good running team and had to keep a very talented Tight End in Gerald Christian in to block more often than I'm sure Bobby would have liked.

We got spoiled watching guys like Eric Wood, Jason Spitz, Kurt Quarterman, Travis Leffew, Renardo Foster and Breno Giacomini. Those were the days when our offense could run the ball and if the defense brought a safety up to stop the run then pity on them, we would pick them apart.

We can say it's the tougher schedule and it is definitely formidable for a young team but It's pretty obvious what's holding Petrino's offense back in his 2nd tenure here.

Was Mike Summers really that much better an O-line coach than Chris Klenakis? Probably not.

Bingo, the offensive line is the main reason. People always get so excited about the QB, RB and WR but the line is the most important part of any offense. The problem with this group and last years is they are/were wildly inconsistent. Every offense breaks down during times in a game. The problem since BP return is the line can be inconsistent for multiple series or quarters. They break down in protection, penalties, or missing a key block that kill drives.

The other factor the last two years is they can't consistenly run the ball. Last year they lost yards at a staggering percentage. This year they are, once again, struggling running the ball if you remove the second half of the Auburn game. It is very hard to have a really good offense without a solid running game.

The last thing is even with this being year two the offense is starting all over again. Last year was a transition year so the you should expect the line to struggle early in the year and get better. I think that played out but they were never a good line. Instead of having back ups and returning players the staff is recreating the line because Strong did a horrible job recruiting offensive lineman.

A bad line is really hard to hide and create a game plan.

It's hard to consistently run the ball, when the defense brings 7-8 players at or near the line of scrimmage and dares you to throw the ball.

In defense of the O-Line, when you have a QB who is a legitimate passing threat, the defense has to honor that. It makes it easier to run the ball. We saw that Saturday, in the 4th qtr.

We were even checking out of and into better plays, run and pass.

Let's face it - as talented as Lamar is - he was mainly effective against AU because they prepared for him the least. Couple that with no college game film of him to gauge what kind of game speed he has, and it's not surprising that he was effective. By the time they figured it out, we had momentum and simply ran out of clock.

Perhaps BP should give him a quarter as he did with Leflors. In any event, I agree with the other posters that he has to be able to complete passes and make better decisions to be put out there again.

Oh, and move Reggie to the slot...

Zipp, a little off-topic, but psychologically when one sees a picture next to a post, one tends to imagine that's what the poster looks like. Please tell you don't even resemble Mitch. That would be cruel!

Sure is a swell picture of Tom Jurich Lite though in all his rat glory.

When I see that pic, I see a pair of horns and a forked tail! lol...;)

How bout musical chairs in the middle of a drive?I actually like the out-of -the-box thinking here.
