Well the good news is they aren’t lacking bodies in that spot. This is the one guy that makes you believe they have a real shot at being very good. It would be a big miss but that is going to happen with these kind of players.
I have thought Kansas would get him and still do. He is a proven coach with other really good players. Kansas knows how to play the recruiting game as well as anyone. Self would beat most everyone out in this situation.
I have been most critical of KP; but in all fairness to Kenny, he is doing everything possible to rebuild this roster; admittedly one that he inherited and may have intentionally encouraged those who left.
I am going to be a little more patient with this staff, and if he were successful signing either of these last two guard options, it will be a most encouraging sign for next season.
What we know about KP is he knows how the evaluate talent. He knows how to develop players. There are just too many NBA guys have stated he is a big part of their success. I was never concerned about recruiting.
I still don’t think they land him to me it is way to crowded of a roster to guarantee minutes. He is going to get all the minutes he wants at IU or Kansas.
It's going to be imperative to somehow figure out how to keep the core of this group he's brought in with the program a few years. These are nice prospects but they just don't figure to be ready to compete at a high level immediately. But you never know what the motor is on a player and if you can somehow get a ton of guys to buy in at once some good things can happen.
It's a real challenge with the $ and portal. This is an any HC problem not just a Kenny problem. Will be interesting to see how he does given the landscape.
Mgbako is your Exhibit A. Once he popped smoke on Duke UofL was the front runner or it was the G League. But the longer it went, the more offers he gets, and suddenly KU appears to have a stack of cash UofL can't or won't match. Whichever it is, this one appears to be over.
We don't really know exactly what happened but if it's about the $ we don't know if UofL chose not to match or offer more, or if UofL did not have the funds to match or offer more. We're just all very much in the dark on recruiting and it's tough to know what to believe depending on where you're getting the info etc. UofL has never made much ground on high end 5* recruits in the past so this result is nothing new. Many guys yanked Pitino around only to end up somewhere else back in the day. Of course Pitino was able to coach circles around his opponents most nights.
"Indiana has been bold and aggressive in creating Name/Image/Likeness opportunities, with three solid, well-funded collectives. The people blaming Adidas because Louisville did not receive a visit from Mgbako need to read what Mgbako said about NIL to Paul Biancardi of ESPN:
"It works hand in hand with the decision," he said. "You get paid for what you love to do. Indiana has great NIL opportunities."
