LOUISVILLE VS MIAMI GAME THREAD- 7:00 ESPN2

I think this year is the example of too much too soon can lead to high expectations.

We were really only rated high because, well who else? And as this season has shown there isn’t really any great teams.

We are mad because we expected a title contender due to preseason rankings. But say we had been preseason #20 or so, maybe we wouldn’t be so mad right now.

Remember our first year in the Big East? We rose to #5 after an undefeated start and hot off a Final 4. We got beat by sUcKs and Big East play sent us to the NIT. We weren’t a great team, lost 4 of our top 6 scorers. But we got high on them because of the rankings.

This team, if we had been evaluated right as a top 15-20ish team, we’d be happier. We should be saying it’s great that in year 2 Mack has us ranked. Mack just brought in a top 5 class with 6 good freshman for the future even with sanctions.

The guard spot is what it is. We weren’t good at the guard spot last year, and lost CC and Fore. We replaced them with another GT in Kimble who wasn’t really a point guard, Perry who was a role player combo guard, and David Johnson was was a top 100 recruit as a combo guard and came here to develop more as a point guard.

Other than Sam Williamson and Malik Williams, the rest of the roster is about what I expected.

This roster is a roster that:
1. 3 coaches in 4 seasons
2. Facing sanctions
3. Guys recruited for Rick’s system
4. Grad transfers to plug holes
5. 6 good freshman, but 5 weren’t ranked where you’d consider them instant impact.

For what we have and what Mack has dealt with, this is pretty good coaching. We are just plain limited right now.

If we played the freshman more and they struggled, people would cry about how he isn’t trying to win now and is only focused on his own recruits. We’d be seeing “give Ryan a chance off the bench” threads.

I think we have a good team with a top player in Nwora and an NBA level big in Enoch. Surrounded with a bunch of decent players. A good draw and we can make a run.

This was a big win. Dropping back to back league home games could have sent this season spiraling the wrong way.

It is clear the squad was overrated. The team needs to continue crashing the glass and it's not too late to find some grit.

I think Mack is doing a good job also.

Just trying to understand the philosophy of this coach. Does Mack want him to pass out or does he have green light every time to try and score. Are there going to be any times or circumstances where we will try to push the tempo or no? What happens when we are down 12 with less than 6 minutes to play? We went to a zone against FSU but it seemed more like nothing else is working let’s try this. The weakness of the pack line defense is 3 point shooting. The zone doesn’t remedy that problem.

nc, it’s not RP ball anymore. It’s a major adjustment for many.

It is an adjustment for sure. UofL basketball has had such a different identity for so long under Crum and then Pitino.

Under CRP we all got used to his fantastic defensive philosophy- the pressing, morphing zone, steals, fast breaks, and the BOOM that could get us back in the game in record time. There were many complaints about his sometimes anemic offenses though.

Mack definitely plays a slower, more deliberate style of ball that takes some getting used to. I've heard ppl say that at Xavier they did get out and run more but we haven't seen it much here so far. Maybe once he gets his own players fully integrated in his system it'll change a bit.

I'd also like to know what Mack teaches them about playing in the post and what he stresses. We already know he doesn't want gambling for steals and pressing. But I'd like to see a viable back up plan when the pack line is getting shredded. Nccard is right that it seemed throwing the zone at FSU was more like a last ditch effort.

It doesn’t have to be RP ball, but it needs to be smart, logical basketball...
I wonder If Mack plays chess? Some people just don’t see all of the possible moves in front of them...
