The Softball Cards start action today as the hosts of the ACC Tournament with a contest against the #3 seed Duke Blue Devils tonight at (appox.) 7:30 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville is the #6 seed.
The Cards and Blue Devils faced during the regular season at Ulmer with the Blue Devils taking the final three games of the series after Louisville won the opener 2-0
Keys for the Cards to advance to semifinal play Friday?
-- Louisville could use a repeat of the four hit, no run performance that Taylor Roby tossed against the Durham school. The thinking here is that Aprile needs to start Roby to see if she can get them to the semis and, then, see what she can get out of the other Cardinal pitchers if the Cards advance.
-- Louisville has been hot and cold at the plate all season long but a continuation of slugging form that they showed against UNC in the regular season series final would help the Cards chances to advance. The Cards put up 24 runs on the board against the TarHeels in the 2-2 series split.
-- The Cards fielding has been suspect at times this season and an avoidance of infield errors would greatly benefit the UofL chances to move on in the Tournament.
In Wednesday action, Georgia Tech advanced out of the #8 vs. #9 seed game over beleaguered Syracuse 6-0. Yellow Jacket pitcher Blake Neleman, a red-shirt freshman, was nearly perfect in the effort, allowing no hits and just two base-runners in seven innings. For their efforts, GT now gets #1 seed Clemson this morning at 11 a'm.
In the second first round game, #7 seed NC State knocked off #10 seed North Carolina 4-2 to advance to second round action vs. #2 seed FSU today. The TarHeels threatened late, loading the bases for leading hitter Kristina Burkhardt in the seventh inning, but she was unable to get anyone to the plate
The games will be on the ACC Network, starting with the Clemson vs. Ga. Tech contest at 11 a.m.
Good luck to our Louisville Cardinals Softball team today !
