This one was weird...
The two squads started outdoor in Boulder, in a heavy snow storm that made conditions nearly impossible. Louisville led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. After the first quarter, a lengthy delay ensued, with the squads finally deciding to go to the University of Colorado indoor practice facility (think Trager, Cards fans) to finish the match.
Nicole Perroni (5) and Hannah Morris (4) combined for nine goals, but Louisville couldn't outlast Colorado in overtime, falling 14-13 in its season opener Friday night at Kittredge Field.
"I thought we battled, but am obviously disappointed in the outcome," said head coach Scott Teeter. "There are some things we need to work on and a lot of positives that we'll take out of this one and get ready to face a good Denver team on Sunday."
The Cardinals struck first as Morris fired one past the Buffaloes' goaltender with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Colorado answered with two goals of its own, but UofL rallied and took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter after Perroni squeezed through the defense to score her first goal of the game.
After coaches and officials decided to move the game inside from the snowy blizzard coming down in Boulder, both offenses dialed up the pressure and traded goals through the whole second quarter as the Buffaloes took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
Louisville continued to play hard, but three straight goals from Colorado to end the third quarter gave the Cardinals quite the hill to climb heading into the final period of play.
UofL came out ready to play in the fourth, ripping off three straight goals from Morris, team captain Caroline Blalock and Perroni to tie the game 12-12 with 2:19 remaining. The Buffaloes answered, taking a 13-12 lead with 1:10 left in the game, but the Cardinals came back and Perroni netted her second goal of the quarter with 0:45 on the clock to tie the game at 13-13 and send it to overtime.
Louisville's defense held strong in overtime, but Colorado pulled off the win, scoring a free-position goal with one second remaining.
