Kentucky:

You know it! I stopped over for a walk today at Patterson. That win Saturday could be a huge catalyst for the rest of the season. Hard to keep battling if we drop all 3 there.

The next phase of the season starts tomorrow in earnest. If we can get our 2 starters back and the team learns coming out of that series,we could catch a spark.

Let's take it one at a time and get better every day till the ACC Tournament.

Quick notes on Kentucky.

Won 2 of 3 vs #6 UT @ Knoxville [Ranking D1 Baseball]

Swiped 10 bases vs UT game 2. Swiped 16 of 18 for the series.

Probable Starter: LHP Ethan Walker 0-0 5.04 25 IP 25 H 23 K
vs UL 04/07 3 IP 4 H, R, 4 K

UK has zero players from Louisville on roster.

UL Game Notes not yet up.

IMO UK much better than record indicates. Played 2nd most Quad 1 games and opponent sos 7 in D1.

Should be an interesting game to say the least.
Two programs that embrace the rivalry and will likely go at it pretty hard tonight.

Looking forward to watching our team fight their way to the win.

Last game our bats were fairly quiet. Let’s Joboo has lifted any bad Lexington spirits form our bats and the Cards go nuts.

Yeah, I don't get it. He looks like three quarter speed. Oh well, I said it earlier, the offense will have to carry the brunt.

Young pitchers are incredibly frustrating with their control. It should be 2-0 but when you walk yourself into a jam stupid stuff can happen.

I think Pike was better down the lineup. Maybe we'll see it go back to Alicea at the top and move Eddie up this weekend. 🤔

I swear every pitcher they use immediately gets behind and then thinks they can throw it right down the middle. Freshman get humbled real quick giving up bombs like that.

This pitching staff was not ready to play tonight. I don't know if it was a lack of preparation, a mental thing, who da %$#& knows? I do know we are being embarrassed on the SEC network.

The difference in pitching is evident. All of Louisville’s pitchers are in the 89-90 range with zero control. Kentucky’s pitchers 92-94 with control. It becomes batting practice.

This is so bad, I find myself wondering if "something" else is going on here.? Like a clubhouse issue or something else. Completely unprepared and absolutely no focus.

Tonight it doesn’t matter every single pitcher has been awful. They need a 10 run rule and go home.

I really don’t know how they have won this many games with these pitchers. The wheels could fall off the rest of the year

This is a talent issue. Look none of these guys are good pitchers. Even Forbes has been average.

Their road ERA is 6.22. That is why the program has struggled. I have no clue how you go from sub 4 ERA pre Coivd with multiple big league arms to post Coivd ERA 6-8 with zero big league arms. It makes no sense how they are building the pitching roster.

You know your pitching is bad when you pull your first baseman to finish the game on the mound.

While it is just one game of many…the facts and data are present. Pitching is below-average (again). There are positives here and there; however, the only constant is inconsistency.

I think we are making too much out of a midweek game. Yeah, I get it, its the kitties, archrivals, enemy, etc. but this game wasn't as important as the remaining ACC games. We are going to need every available pitcher again this weekend against the Seminoles. Yeah it sucks but I could kind of see it coming.

My concern is everyone has pitchers that are consistently throwing in the 90-95 range. In the ACC you have to have dudes throughout the staff that is in that range. They are rolling guys out left and right that are in the 87-90 range. That by itself isn’t a huge deal. However, when you tie that with lack of control of that 87-90 fastball and zero consistency in your off speed then it becomes batting practice. I could hit 400
against most of this staff because I can only worry about their fastball plus I know when I will get it because they are always working from behind.

There are some good freshman but built this staff with freshman which makes no sense today’s environment. The shift is dramatic since Covid and no one can explain it.

I think their record is smoke and mirrors. FSU has elite arms that will keep the offense in check. I have zero confidence the staff will keep FSU offense in check.

I think Mac is dead set on building the team with guys he wants to bring along slowly, over 3-4 years. The problem is that the guys we saw last night, including Starke may not ever progress to ACC level pitchers. Eberle and Schweitzer are the 2 guys I have seen that are young next level arms. I have not seen enough of England to offer a guess. Cutts is a senior so you can't consider him going forward after this year. Forbes has regressed and Detmers is MIA.
A lot riding on Mac going into the off season and how he fixes this.

True - it was one game and just one loss. But, the reason behind the loss is the issue. Losing to uk in a mid-week game doesn’t make me mad. Losing by hitting batters and walking batters left and right IS a MAJOR issue. Last night’s debacle started with Lucas’ misplay of that fly ball that went over his head. That is explainable. The runners that scored were due to poor pitching.

I wouldn't say Forbes has regressed. He has just proved to be what he always been cut out to be. A mid game reliever with a big time FB but not much else. He uses his velocity to get through 3 - 4 innings or the 2nd or 3rd time through the lineup when batters ignore his offspeed and time up his FB. To stretch him out as a starter would basically mean coming out 91-93 instead of 96-97 so he can go longer in the game, but again if he doesn't have that high octane FB he's just a good pitcher not an outstanding pitcher. I would also say that being a two way player maybe hasn't given him enough experience to develop more pitches. Maybe Dan and Roger think they can still get that out of him but you can't do it during the season. Don't get me wrong, Forbes is still an above average arm. I don't think we need projects, we need guys who are mostly already developed. Same with Michael. He's been a reliever all his career, it was going to be a good bet that he would start to wear down with all the pitches and innings thrown. My guess is that Dan/Roger thought that one or two of his freshman would eventually slot into the weekend. Unfortunately Detmers injury kind of forced that issue.

The entire problem is they thought McMichael’s and a bunch of freshman was a good plan. Forbes has never been a weekend starter and he was their Friday night plan.

Their evaluation of pitchers has been awful since Covid which is weird because they were terrific up until Covid. You can go young but you can’t miss., they have missed….a lot.

On top of all the pitching anxieties we all share, the bottom half of the lineup has to get it going...and soon.

Maybe put Pike back down there and let Neighbors be the every day 2nd baseman in the 9 hole. Idk
Did I miss something about Tyson? Is he also hurt?

I think Dan is just playing all the catchers. Maybe Taggert was ill. Otherwise, he should be behind the plate 98% of the time. Baker is not the answer.

It's not "JUST" this loss though. It's a reoccurring theme and has been reoccurring for the last few years. It's a problem and it has to be addressed. Really should have been addressed 2 years ago.

Louisville baseball is falling into obscurity...

Disagree with this. I mean, they are ranked. Are they a Top 10 team? No.

Forbes (to me) is turning out to be a slightly better version of Hawks. Their upside is great. Their downside - third time thru the lineup and they start to lose it.
