Georgia Tech is in negotiations with Memphis coach Josh Pastner and is trying to make him the Yellow Jackets' next coach, a source told CBS Sports late Thursday.

A deal could be finalized as soon as Friday.

Pastner has been the coach at Memphis for the past seven seasons and is 167-73.

He has made four NCAA Tournaments in that span.

I think this would be a good move for Pastner. It gets him into a strong basketball conference at a school that has had some success in the past. It also gets him away from the crazy Memphis fans, who believe Josh has lost his luster. He's still young and needs new motivation.

Good move for him as it looks like he's likely to be canned at Memphis. Not sure who his competition is but, this is a much better sounding hire, than actual one for GT. Pastner is just not that good a coach.

It's amazing how quick schools dump coaches. The current (former) coach was very successful at Dayton and his team this year was much improved over last year (last year's team was competitive but couldn't hit an outside shot, this year they had guys who were dangerous behind the arc). Hope GT gets Pastner and gives him the same support they gave his predecessor.

Brian Gregory was at Georgia Tech five seasons. He never had a winning season in the ACC. Had only two winning seasons overall -- one of those was 16-15. Attendance had cratered, I am not sure how long they were supposed to give him.

It is sounding like a done deal, and Memphis fans couldn't be happier.

Memphis made a huge mistake a few years ago and gave him a contract stating that if they fired him, they would have to pay him the entire salary that he would have made for the rest of the contract. It did not include a buyout clause. So, if they let him go this year, they would have to pay him $10 million dollars. That is the only reason they have not fired him.

Here are the details on the contract: http://www.commercialappeal.com/col...inny-on-Josh-Pastners-contract-366424341.html

I am not sure why GT wants him. While he is a super nice guy and has been a great recruiter, he clearly cannot coach. This year, it became obvious that he could not manage the players. Too many guys have left the program and he had big disagreements with the seniors on the team that spilled over to the court. This reputation is starting to hurt him with recruits.

The only people who would benefit from this would be Memphis. Pastner would benefit in the short run, that he gets out of a bad spot. But he moves to a bigger stage and would only have a larger fall.

If he couldn't win in the American with the talent he had at Memphis, will be hard to win in the ACC. GT is a location that is alot of talent, maybe he can get some of that talent and get the fan base excited.

I don't understand this hire GT hires a coach that was probably really close to being fired. They didn't make the NCAA tournament this year in the AAC in a year when the conference was considered down this year. He is a good recruiter but an awful coach, he will get chewed up in the ACC.

Very weird that the ACC did a great job on football hires this offseason but has had some head scratchers with basketball hires.

I think thats because most know that coaching in the ACC is a difficult job. It's hard to win at some of the schools considering who your going to play. those good coaches at mid majors probably past the jobs over at a GT or PITT.

There's no reason to bag on Pastner. We lost the last two games we played against him that we should have won. He might do well at Georgia Tech if he gets recruits. He might even beat North Carolina if they ever own up to anything.

That doesn't make him a good coach. That year he had the best team he has ever had, and the only year he ever won an NCAA Tournament game. Larry Finch beat us several times, and he wasn't a great coach either. Since then, his inability to get the best from his talent has been revealed, and the talent was either leaving or deciding not to come.

I'm not a fan of Pastner. Using your analogy, we must not have a very good coaching staff if we lost twice when we should have won. Somebody must think Pastner is a good coach as he got hired at Georgia Tech. We're going to find out how we stack up against him again, and if history is any indication we better have our "A" game. Somebody even put a thread on here asking him if we would want him as an assistant.

A lifetime .410 % against top 50 RPI teams doesn't exactly scream "Worldbeater". I doubt if Pitino or Williams are going to lose much sleep over the hire.

Pastner recruits well.GT is losing 4 seniors that played most of the minutes. His recruiting touch will be a plus.

We also lost to Drexel's former coach the last time we played them. He must be a great coach as well.

No, that is your analogy.

And I was the person who put the thread on here about hiring him as an assistant. The guy can recruit, but he is not ready to be a head coach. On paper, his record looks good. The reality is quite different, as Memphis discovered in the past two years. Regardless, Pitino likes him. Pitino was trying to schedule games against him and advocated for Memphis to join the Big East.

BTW, you should always bring your A game. As Denny Crum used to point out: on any given night, any one team could beat any other team. Never take any game for granted.

Reading about all the turmoil at the head coach position across the country makes me feel blessed to have had the same splendid coach for so long. Thank God we have coach pitino.

Send Kenny Payne down there. That would be a great gig for him since he's already coached for one of our rivals.
Doubt he qualifies. It's not like Calipari churns out coaching prospects. His coaching tree looks like a twig.

The number one choice appears to be Gregg Marshall from Wichita State. He presently earns more there than Pastner was earning at Memphis, so they need to put up some dough if they want to get him.
