Sooner or later, Universities are going to realize hiring a head coach because he's a former player at that University is not some guarantee of success. UNC is feeling the heat. Remember Danny Manning?

A great coach usually ends up being some short dude who only dreamed of being as talented as the players he coaches. There are exceptions of course but not a lot.

Not going to cast any stones at IUs glass house when we hired a decrepit perennial assistant as head coach that turned down other head coaching jobs, with absolutely no resume at age 92, and going to a top 10 program, not because of accomplishment, but because of other reasons, right? AND gave him an additional year after an historically catastrophic freshman debut. But hey, that was the trend the last four years.

These jobs just aren't that coveted. The confirmed elite HC's retired or went to the NBA, or are just very happy and beloved where they are. Not many of 'em left. Can count them on one hand. Nobody is making oh wow at the time hires.

They end up hiring a former player or a mid-major HC some fans don't know. They might take the legacy route because they know the legacy will accept the job and the program won't get embarrassed by getting turned down by bigger names over and over again. See UK. See us.

Danny Manning went to Kansas, they never hired him as a HC.

He was hired by Tulsa first, and he did make an NCAAT with them in his 2nd year, so he actually did prove himself at a lower level.

He then failed at WF, which isn't totally new for them, getting a failed HC.

Absolutely zero MERIT involved in this hire.

And in the long run it terribly hurt Kenny Payne’s legacy and image. Instead of being a UofL National Champion, he is now viewed by many as a clueless buffoon who literally stole millions from UofL.

“They” did him much more harm than good with that hire.

Hope Karma kicks “them” in the ass.
