The more things unfold the more all these firings look like an NBA arena setup. The Crap Journal ran an article about the old fart Dan Issel is pushing hard for the NBA to Louisville. It will be an 18 month push and Issel says if they are successful they won't negotiate for arena scheduling with Louisville.

They will negotiate with the arena board for their scheduling. Eric Granger who was in charge of the operations at FedEx Forum in Memphis has moved to Louisville this past year. Along with Granger moving to Louisville, Issel running his pie hole and the firing of Pitino and Jurich this is a real push.

If we had Jurich this wouldn't bother me as much he would start raising money for an on campus arena. With Tyra we have one of their cronies who will let them call the shots.

The NBA isn’t coming to Louisville. It’s not happening. Also, I couldnt tell you a good location for an on campus arena either unless you toned down the amount of seats it can hold. There’s not really a great location on campus.

This was all a contingency in the Jurich master plan. The problem is of course no Jurich. And Tyra's the last guy who could pull off the necessary fund raising for an arena on Floyd. He has zero credibility with U of L's big donors--the ones still around--and his focus should continue to be on damage control.

Recall, a defense of Tyra's hiring was that we've already built the facilities we need. For a long time to come, we've gone from one extreme to the other as far as capital fund raising...

Yes I'm sure that was Jurichs' master plan. LOL. They could've built one on campus when we left FH. Guess what? We didn't. We wanted a state of the art arena and there isn't enough room on campus for one. Jurich and Pitino built the entire agreement with YUM!. The KFC was OURS. And it was ours because of Jurich and Pitino. That was their plan, but no wonder Zipp changes it magically because his saint got canned. Boo whoo.

Simply hilarious.

Anyone wanna set straight the guy who was born yesterday with his own version of history?

HRTheCard, you are really missing what is actually going on, Pitino and Jurich were the biggest road blocks to an NBA team and they got rid of them. The only thing standing in the way of the NBA now is actual numbers that would deter investors and Issels claim that it won’t have any effect on our taxes is a lie. When it does happen remember Tyra was a part of all this. The only good from all this is that it shows how irrelevant Lessington is in our state.

Not happening. They were roadblocks for the NBA I agree. However, this isn't about the NBA. This is about the arena. Jurich and Pitino wanted the YUM! Center. They did not want an on-campus arena. If they did, it would have happened when we left Freedom Hall. I like how this is also being blamed Tyra game when they've been trying to bring the NBA to Louisville for awhile now, well before he was hired.

You guys are insane if you think ANY pro team (from any sport) is coming to this cow-town.

not enough population or money. get over it and quit being so paranoid.

as for on campus? YES. 10k seats. all FANS. not the 'read the paper' corporate dummies that sit in the Yum. i really dislike that place. no fun at all to see games there.

Yes there is a perfect spot “on campus” for an arena (the old Silos property) and NO there isn’t going to be an arena built there or anywhere else for that matter. If you think the present BOT and the legislature in Frankfort is going to build a 17-18 K on campus arena for UofL then I’ve got an orange tree that spouts apples and peaches for sale. Out state can’t afford to pay attention much less have money for building an arena for higher education institution here in Kentucky . . . Unless, of course, that institution is uahkay as they will get one much, much sooner than we will. Perhaps our resident Kentucky legislator, ajcardman would like to give his two cents worth here.

17-18k? why? 8-10k is my number. small, intimate, LOUD, ROWDY.

this ain't a pro town and college ball doesn't need pro arenas. i love Duke's place. just right.

edit: and yeah the state can't afford it. UofL can't afford it. the city can't afford it. the state is in it's final death throws like a lot of the slaver rebellion states and arenas should never be on the ballot/in people's minds.

This is unequivocally wrong. No one at UofL wanted the Yum downtown. No one. But, being good civic members of the community, as well as receiving a favorable lease agreement, they went along with the wishes of Louisville Metro and the state. The Yum was part of their Louisville downtown revitalization plan. UofL agreed to help them out. It's Common knowledge a less expensive arena was desired either on campus, at the fairgrounds, or even at the less than desired old Louisville Water Co. site.

Thank you! The last place Jurich and Co wanted the arena is where it’s located now. Revisionists always leave that part out.

Tyra isn't getting blamed. He just seems to not protect UofL's best interests in this matter, as Jurich did.

I think Tyra came in as a good ole boy connected to the people who ousted the people before him. I think the people who caused the turnover ( BOT, Bevin, Grissom, Postel , etc.) have bigger plans than what you see right now.
Issel wouldn't be organizing an 18 month plan and the former operations manager for the FedEx Forum in Memphis wouldn't move here for no reason.

A refurbished Louisville Gardens would make a nice home court for the Card fans wishing for a smaller more intimate venue.

Duke has stuck with Cameron out of tradition. There is no way any top school builds a new stadium that small now. There'd be no profit in. You might want intimate but that would also mean you want a smaller program to go with it.

NiT games were the best games I've ever been to in the yum. That's because all those rich folks decided to stay home and the common folks showed up

Maybe he's not openly defending it because we have nothing to worry about, because it's not happening. We aren't 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc on the list IF the NBA even expanded. This is a college city, not a pro city, and people know that. I don't really like the idea of decreasing the capacity to 10k-15k on an "on-campus" arena. That means tickets prices will go up because of the limited value. They are already high as it is. The UVA, UNC, NIT, UK (last year) were a few of the one's I attended the past 2 years. They were VERY loud. I just think that if we're going to build closer to campus (which we wont until the agreement is up, even then we probably wont), then it needs to have the same capacity.

You know what they say " where there's smoke, there's fire " and there is a lot of smoke.

Keep talkin', I'm lovin' it... LINK

"...At first, task force member and University of Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich, along with University of Louisville president James Ramsey and Task Force member John Schnatter (founder of Papa John's Pizza), were ardently opposed to a downtown site and supported instead a campus arena, or a new arena built near Freedom Hall at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Jurich and Ramsey would later support the waterfront site..."

I thought they put the Clubhouse Apartments where the old silos were. I think the best option for the pocketbooks would be to try and move back in to Freedom Hall and remodel it.

No that’s not right. Nothing has been built on the silos site.

Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino did not push for a downtown arena. The business leaders and the city pushed real hard for the downtown arena. The Fairgrounds Board was going to build us an arena for $100 million dollars less than the downtown arena with more seating. If you don't know the history then keep your opinions to your self or go back to your kitty board.

I still believe an arena at the KFEC would have been a mistake. There is absolutely nothing to “do” at the KFEC both before and after any event there. Downtown was the right move but the location was wrong. But that’s all water over the dam. If any of you believe the state was going to approve an on campus arena then you also believe that pigs can fly and that apples come from orange trees.

ungh no doubt. the fairgrounds are awful. fine for a state fair, terribad for a game.

who wants to sit in the parking lot for 2 hours and do nothing?

I'd much rather spend two hours trying to get out of Witherspoon and on to 64.

What does a slapd!ck need explained?
A lot I guess. So what exactly was jurichs master plan? Build a super expensive arena and then hand it off to an nba franchise and go across town and build another super expensive arena?

If Louisville would have built an on campus arena the Yum would not have been built. There would not have been a tenant for the Yum, Louisville insured revenue by scheduling games there.

Clueless, maybe willfully so...

gocards, the only thing the State cares about is the State. You don't think they really care about the City of Louisville.

The KFEC is a State facility, and it has taken a major financial hit from Bailout Arena. All of this was known--just denied or glossed over when the downtown hacks were in front of a microphone a decade ago.

A new arena at KFEC was a dunk shot. The plan would have been for an on-campus location near KFEC to still be under KFEC management. Had it been financed by the State, the State would have taken most of the revenue.

Judging the "right" location includes how it's paid for. I'd argue that's the most important consideration...

Seattle, Pittsburgh, Vancouver, and Kansas City...all pro towns, all want the NBA...Issel is not going to sell Louisville to any franchise, all they have to do is look at the numbers and the big cardinal bird on the YUM, enjoy the horse racing and free bourbon for a weekend and thanks but no thanks.

Jurich did take a much stronger position than Tyra, but I don't think that it's needed. UofL did take the current deal because it favored us and Tyra may think more community than university (vs. Jurich) regarding a restructuring of the plan; but I don't think that's a terrible idea either. Like it or not, the YUM is home.
