Is It Bad Coaching Or Something Else?

We've all seen and mentioned the lack of fundamentals, careless/sloppy play, no boxing out, lack of effort and hustle, bewildering offense, etc. and wonder what they focus on in practice.

But is all of that simply due to bad coaching and development or is it the players themselves? Or is it some combination of both? Or something else entirely?

Yes

Starting off with not signing a true point guard has opened up a littany of problems.

I contend that Curry, Wheeler, Withers and El played better as as a team last year. This year
Individually, El has excelled while Curry has severly regressed.

The media and ex players who witnessed preseason practices and accurately reported the lackadaisical and poor skills exhibited by the players were ridiculed.

Payne has yet to connect with the players. Maybe they didnt like the discipline Ree and Fabio received. The team was supposed to be in tip top shape and its obvious theyre not. We knew the Xs and Os would be scarce, however they cant get a simple inbounds.

Payne should have been a HC somewhere before taking on a top 10 job.
All the UofL NIT teams ive witnessed since 1984 would beat this team similar to what Arkansas did last night despite the 22' team being hired rated.

Payne was just the wrong man for the job.

Bad coaching? I don't know about that. Inexperienced coaching, in over his head coaching, yes. We, as fans, just need to suck it up while he learns on the job.

I honestly don’t know if you could coach a team to be this bad. It’s obviously a joint effort. Just watched the first half of the Texas Tech game and I’m screaming at the TV as I watch all five of our players standing on the perimeter on offense. Two of them right next to each other. I swear, the TT players seemed befuddled…like “are they kidding with this!!!“

Listened to some of first half on radio and basically Valvano was saying that this is a group of guys that lack understanding of basic bball principles.

we don't understand basic defensive rotations. And we just go 1 on 1 on offense.

But we're "chasing dreams." We are chasing dreams for sure

I seriously wonder if this team survives the season. If they continue to get ran out of the building game after game after game, there's going to be a mutiny.

Don't be surprised if there's some sort of Covid pause being used as an excuse to not play games. If several players bolt after this semester, a whole lot of tough decisions will have to be made.

Something that needs to happen immediately - and it’s bad coaching that it hasn’t happened yet - is that El Ellis needs to be pulled any time he brings the ball up the court, doesn’t make a single pass, and jacks up a shot that doesn’t go in.

Also, the next ball fake we see from this team will be the first ball fake we’ll see from this team. Poor coaching indeed.

Kenny is paying the price for how he recruited this summer. He should not have came in right away with his approach of coming to Louisville for Louisville, when we’ve been down for the last 5 years or so. He should have proposed NIL deals for top players in the portal in order to start winning games right away and get this thing back up and running before he makes it his program. Instead, he settled and added the players he could. Hopefully, this is a lesson to him as a first time head coach because this is ugly.

An on campus intramural team would play harder and use more screens, pass better, and rebound.

This team has a lot of issues, it's not just 1 thing. If it were just 1 thing maybe they could fix it. I think some guys will transfer out soon. They may have left sooner except they probably wanted to have the free trip to Hawaii.

I don't see any short-term solutions to fix this team. We just have to hope Kenny can recruit strong in the Portal next summer and with the 2024 class.

Unless he leaves on his own, or we have another major scandal, I expect he'll coach UofL next year.

There is no way that college basketball players can only score 38 points in a game. 38 points is what 13 year olds score in a church league on a Tuesday night

I still have 4 years. How bout you Ville?

Seriously though, it's time to ditch whatever it is they're trying and make it a baseline to baseline game. Turn it into a pickup game. It's the only way we're gonna be able to score any points.
Might as well press too,if we can score. Seriously, a track meet.

He isn’t leaving after 1 year. This is awful. We need to remember this team had no new pieces added that made it any better than the 13-19 team. It actually lost a good chuck on their offensive production and replaced it with nothing. This year was going to be a mess regardless of coach.

There were locker problems last year. Chris Mack hated this group so much he quit. This year is 85% on players. They turn it around they deserve the credit. Hint they won’t. The players aren’t playing hard. There is no one on the bench that can push them. How does Payne make them accountable? He can’t not this year.

2023 they have to rebuild the roster. Everyone needs to go except the freshman.
2024 he has to land elite kids in early in the cycle.

That is the path. This year is done.

I'm going to wait until the season is over before agreeing.

I don't think this is going anywhere how he thought it would go.

And while I think that win total guess right now is pretty insignificant, if he wins < 3 games he may decide this is not for him and resign. I don't know how he is wired. This is going to be a very interesting situation to follow. I don't think they can fire him after 1 year I do agree with that. Not unless there are some real serious off court mitigating factors.

I keep wondering about Danny Manning and Nolan Smith. How can they stomach what is happening. Nolan probably texts Jon Schyer every day begging to come back. At what point does he look at KP and say, “This just isn’t how it’s done!”. How do you come from a well-oiled machine to this cluster fork?

They would of been better off if everyone transferred out. I will never understand kids that don’t play hard. Curry has never played defense. Now you get zero offense and effort. The only person at fault is Curry. I am OK with giving him time to figure out the system but mid year he either gets it or he sits.

This team is 1-6 in all games this year with four losses against teams we should never expect to lose to. Yes, we’re not stacked with talent but we’re not devoid of it either. But, if the talent level is lacking…whose fault is that? And if the talent we do have is under performing…whose fault is that? And if the starting lineup is not producing but the starting lineup hasn’t changed…whose fault is that? So, yes…it is coaching.

It’s a combination of both the players and bad coaching. KP had to win the first 3 games. There is enough talent on the team to win those 3. Maui results would be a little bit easier to digest with wins in those 3 games.

In my opinion, talent aside, the team overall has a very low basketball IQ. They seem to be ok with losing. There is no sense of urgency, no fire, no floor leader… they just do not seem to be playing hard and not fully engaged. We do not have guys that get after it right now on both ends of the floor. As a fan, I would feel a lot better if they were going all out and losing. I’m not seeing that. From a mental standpoint, I’m not sure the guys believe in KP.

What we are seeing in these games has to makes you question what is going on in practice, film review, scouting, etc… KP is trying to run a pro-style offense with no pro talent. Side note: keep an eye on underneath out of bounds plays and how they struggle to get the ball in. Against TT, they went to the safety release (El Ellis in most cases) behind the 3 point line or half-court on just about every underneath OOB play. It’s strange. I get it sometimes but you should be able to execute something with solid screens… I digress.

I’ve seen it mentioned by others, it’s the defensive end that should have everyone the most concerned. Better committed effort on defense will help the offense and is the only hope for turning this around. I’m just not sure that’s going to happen.

Cincinnati today is another chance for a win. Cards are a +7.5 underdog. On paper, this should be a close game… Cannot let UC run you off the floor today.

At this point why not? And throw Fabio, Hercy, and Ree out there too if they aren't going to redshirt. We need more bodies at guard, particularly PG.

There was a brief period where we executed a full court trapping defense with some success. It would require using the entire roster in order to employ 40 minutes without totally exhausting the players, but it might be the only way to engage energy and utilize our length.

The absence of confidence is evident and they desperately need to find something they can do effectively. If there is any positive with such horrible performance by the starters, it would suggest that our other 10 can do no worse.

Lol - coaching tree? More like a Festivus pole.
