You would have thought they would have either done it by now or do it within the next 24-48 hours.

I don't care who they hire.

But if it's Kenny valuable time is being wasted. We could have already had him building a relationship with current players, and would at least have a better chance at the portal.

If it turns out they hire a guy still coaching then okay to that too.

But if they end up hiring Kenny after this tournament starts I am gonna really be confused as to why they waited so long to do it.

I understand waiting until the ACCT is over outta respect for the current staff and team. The season ended Wednesday?

Thoughts?

Maybe they have been waiting to get past Selection Sunday….who knows? But if they don’t announce Kenny by COB tomorrow my guess is they are waiting on someone who is in the tourney.

He still has a job with the NY Knicks, and it could be that he wants to finish the NBA season out! (Just a thought)

The longer the announcement takes, the less likely it would seem to be Payne. I agree that if it's him, why wait? Other schools have already made their new hires known.

I tend to agree but to do it properly don’t you have to vet all the candidates. Payne is not a home run it is wise to shake the trees. Coaches are all in on the tournament. They may say they are interested but they aren’t going to sit down until after their season is over.

I don’t think them taking time means Payne isn’t the top guy at this moment. His camp is trying to speed up the process. That tells you someone is on the list they are concerned with or gives time for others to show interest.

There really is no hurry. Have coach in by mid April.

It will never happen, but I am not sure that giving Pegues a modest increase to remain as interim HC right now, could be the very best decision, at least until the NCAA sanctions are identified. Honestly ….. at least Mike has the experience that Payne is lacking as a HC.

To me this is the one and obvious answer (as long as Kenny Payne isn't the pre-determined anointed one). You have to vet your candidates and all of them but KP are ramping up to opening weekend.

Last time, Mack was that "anointed one." It was almost ridiculous to even mention anyone else. Yet the interview, offer, and acceptance all came after Xavier flamed out in the opening weekend.

I doubt it. Xavier flamed out because they already knew he was gone. Mack had already let it be known he was interested in the U of L job. If he didn’t, his wife sure did.

Honestly I don’t think he wants a HC job or he would have had one by now or already been announced here.
My opinion is KP has given indications that he’s not interested, which is why his fan club (Jr, Jerry, and Wade) have been silent. If true the search firm is having to do a more in-depth search and the pool isn’t that big. Plus the vetting that’s required takes time. It also means Heird’s job became even more complicated and almost a no win situation. Don’t envy him.

I agree I don’t envy Heird’s job. I think Bozich tweet about Georgia and Missouri shows Payne is interested. There is no reason to send that tweet if he wasn’t interested. It is also very easy to tell people he is not interested. It makes this whole process easier if that was the case.

The real PR challenge of this process revolves around Payne. You have to make sure everyone is completely vetted. If Payne ends up being the guy the last thing he or supporters need is for people to think he is a write in. The whole vetting process validates Payne to an extent.

I typically agree with most of your takes but, this one is simply terrible. Pegues had an opportunity to show why he should be considered and failed. There would be less than zero buzz around the program were this to be the move and I think that recruiting would be abysmal.

A Rick Bozich tweet shows absolutely nothing about Payne and his interest!
Bozich is fake news, and trying to get followers and eyes on his tweets!

I appreciate the hell out of Coach Pegues guiding the Titanic to the iceberg. He was truly in a no win situation. He has a lot more character than Mack though that is saying nothing really.

That said bringing Pegues back would be insanity.

Jeremy Wahman says he’s 100% positive they hire KP in the next 2 weeks
in total agreement positive of the hire . The announcement time frame is what they cannot nail down. And im.confident of some other things that I know of with this. Let's just say at this point he has everything he wants and needs . I be stated before unless something changes it's a done.

Expect Baylor and Drew news unless U of L gonna make him the highest paid coach in history you can get that whish out your heads.

Lol and if I get egg on my face I will care less because my days of being a fan would be over. You will have a very low end hire.
Due diligence might come at a cost Josh and this fanbase could regret

Fyi these are just my own opinions no need to take it personal.

Heird has done his due diligence and kicked the tires on some big fish. These top coaches recognize the role of longevity and continuity in their success so they aren’t as apt to move. And with all the TV money every P5 school can pay big bucks. Heird has done what needed to be done and has arrived at a great choice for UofL - we will return to prominence.

KP recruited 12 5 star players in 6 years you have to be eating mushrooms.

Buying players errr recruiting isnt coaching. The traitor payne had his opportunity to be here. He turned it down to go buy players for the enemy. Let the clown go to GA or Mizzou or south America. Anywhere but the University of Louisville.

last 20 out 21 championships have been won by a 1,2, or 3 seed in the tournament. recruiting is key and Payne has lot of experience.
much easier to win if you have NBA talent on the roster.

That's what it's about especially now take your chances with high level talent always.

excerpt from Jeff Greer podcast today : He knew KP was the man however he baited alot of you into thinking Drew, and other big fish were attainable and he knew they were not for the reasons he now is coming forth with that. He omitted the last couple weeks.Just like Bobby V hyped you guys up with that Drew will listen crap.

"All that said, challenges to Louisville’s coaching search exist: U of L cannot afford big buyouts or even “medium” buyouts that number in the seven digits. That impacts just about every candidate, save for a few. And, to be completely honest, in conversations with agents and basketball people around the country, I can say there is a perception that Louisville is a really difficult place to coach right now, between the lack of permanent leadership at the school, an extremely anxious fan base on social media and what I would describe as a bizarre media landscape."

Say it is Payne, what IF he can't bring in top level recruits? Does he have the x and o ability to compensate for that? That's one of my biggest questions if he is hired.

The reality is if he doesn’t bring in talent he won’t succeed. That would apply to anyone they hire not just Payne.
Granted. But Paynes main drawing point is that he will bring in top level talent. All I'm asking is IF he can't bring in elite talent then what?

Him bringing in better level of talent is not even a discussion. I guarantee this program will have the type players we have never had . Not saying the best overall but a level we are not used too seeing. Players that will have a certain level of athletism. People are sleeping on his development the one thing Rick focused on was individual instruction this is soemthing KP thrives at also. I'm excited because we have a coach that knows what an NBA level player looks like. You cant discount his time with all those NBA prospectat UK he knows what talent is .

They are screwed. I don’t think that will be the case. By all accounts Payne is well like throughout the basketball community. I think they will support him. .

When did Payne turn down the opportunity to come to UofL?
if you’re going to say when Mack was hired that won’t make sense. There’s no way he would’ve got the job over Mack at that time!
in 2010 the year he went to UK Pitino already had his assistants accounted for. In 2014 when he was named associate HC turning that down to be a assistant coach again just does make sense for anyone!

I think that’s a great question. The guys that I’ve heard he’s lining up as assistants - Milt Wagner and Nolan Smith - will make a splash with the fans but, no idea if they can coach X’s and O’s either. Supposedly there’s another assistant who previously (currently?) worked for Gregg Popovich.

Bringing in talent would be huge but I’ll say this - the last damn thing we need (or should want) is to become an effing revolving door of 1ADs like they have become down the road. That’s a big reason yut fans are turned off to the program and, turning on sweaty cal.

Welcome to the new world. Does it matter if the 1AD’s are transfers or freshman? It is the nature of the game today. Whoever the coach is they will have to figure out how to manage their roster. Poor roster mgmt was Mack’s down fall.
