A post in another thread about GT always being tough for a defense to play gave me the idea to see what everyone’s thoughts are on stopping GT’s run game. The poster (can’t remember) also cited the high probability of injury.

Therefore I have an idea. GT doesn’t recruit all that well. Their OL isn’t ever that big, and they don’t have very good athletes anywhere but QB, RB, and FB. So, we should have our 2nd-3rd string DL and secondary scheme against them all year leading up to the game and prevent our starting DL from injury. LBs don’t usually get injured as often because they don’t see as much of that BS cut blocking. ie play your best run stoppers (Hicks was cited at the media day) and Etheridge. Don’t even worry about suiting up your starting DBs. Just play your best freshmen and sprinkle in some guys with experience in the 2nd string. So in summary, play the most important starters at the LB spot because they make the calls and are less likely to get injured, but give everyone else a bye week.

Interesting idea although that won’t happen. The #1 key against the triple option is to play strict assignment football. If a defender gets greedy and goes away from assignment, they will burn you. If Peter Sirmon were d coordinator still, I guarantee GT would’ve beaten the hell out of us. We will see if Van Gorder teaches these guys well.

Our d line needs to be agile and keep their hands on the o linemen otherwise they will be cut blocked like crazy.

Play with proper assignment and technique and we can shut down GT.

Agree about the "strict" part.

If 2nd team practiced against it all year they should be disciplined.

But......the second team has to practice against the next opponent.

They're only one play away from 1st team. ;)

Agree 100%. Well, maybe not shut them down but definitely keep things under control.

I will add that "true" under center triple option ball (I think they do that a lot???) requires 2 RBs in the set thus limiting the set to 3 WR. This can set the table for a lot of Man-Free coverage thus getting a 7th defender in the run game.

Peace

Blitz, blitz, blitz.
Get them in 2nd and 14, 3rd and 12, and you take them out of their offense and comfort zone.

I hope this year is a return to the old CBP where the best defense is a high powered offense. If it is Tech won't be able to keep up and this team would be fun to watch.

That’s no fun though. Having games where both teams are in the 30’s and 40’s isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I grew up watching mickey Andrews’ defenses just knock people around for the entire game and the final scores would be 14-6. Defensive battles are just as good. And what’s very fun is when you’re team has a high powered offense and a lock down defense and you just decimate teams by 21 plus. That’s a thing of beauty.

All of the above ideas about how to “play” GT are good ones and are, in fact, correct. However the best way to beat GT is to get a 14 to 17 point lead and then use your offense to “eat up time” to keep their offense off the field. The Paul Johnson triple option isn’t designed to score quickly. If, in fact, they do find themselves behind and then speed up their offense that is when that offense begins to turn the ball over on mistakes. Typically they don’t pass very well and if they are behind that is what they have to do out of the triple option sets. That also allows the defense to blitz which is something you cannot do while they are still “running” the ball as another poster pointed out that blitzing at that point takes a defensive man out of the play. Score often and quickly and then keep their offense off the field. The GT offense is akin to going for a root canal.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Blitzing is one of the worst things you can do against the triple option. The triple option develops so quickly that in general blitzing will just take a defender out of the play.
Read and react will kill us. You need negative yardage plays.
