Kenny Payne has been on the job for two months after being away from college basketball for two years. He said he wanted to do things his way and the right way. That doesn’t mean fold 2 months in and get into a bidding war just because we could use another body.
He has never coached a game.
The staff has never worked together.
Some of you expected Kenny to put together some kind of elite AAU team via the transfer portal. Calling this off-season an epic failure, bringing up the hot seat, yada yada.
Tell me, why would a kid choose complete uncertainty (throw in that cloud we always talk about too) over established teams/relationships? Especially when they’re looking at just playing one more year before going pro. Some of you act as if it’s completely unfathomable we didn’t land these guys while it doesn’t surprise me in the least. It will surprise me next year if he has the same struggles after taking a sub-500 team from the previous year to the tournament.
The idea “the staff underestimated their abilities to close” is ludicrous. We went from not being on DJ Wagner’s radar to his predicted choice. A lot of the names being floated for 2023/2024, wouldn’t be considering Louisville if it weren’t for this staff. Patience. It’s June of year 1, man.
I also understand when you hear things like, Louisville backed off or didn’t think the fit was right, you don’t believe it. But, I do. Everything that KP has said so far leads me to believe he values character over talent.
“What? We can’t be critical of the staff?”
- Calling the season a wash before it begins, saying the staff can’t actually recruit, epic failure, etc.; is not being critical. Odds are you didn’t want KP to begin with, and you’re pouncing on the first opportunity to attack.
