Heisman Watch

It was reported yesterday that 9% of the Heisman voters had already turned their ballots in even before yesterday's games had started...LJ had such a big lead this year that I just don't see him losing it. Would be shocked (and pissed) if he did.

And nobody really stepped up and challenge him...would not be surprised if he swept all the awards.

That's what I'm saying. No way should voters try to get cute with some guy that wasn't being seriously discussed all year. They're trying to do that with the Oklahoma duo and that's absurd.

It's an individual award; not a team award (it should be at least).

Finebaum said it best. He said "Jackson really fell off at the end of the year, but when I look at the whole year, there's no one that's done what he's done. It's a flawed year, but the trophy goes to Jackson because no one stepped up enough to close the gap".

And even Galloway was saying Jackson....it at the point that some talking heads are just searching...30 Passing TDs...21 Rushing TD...51 Total...over 3300 passing yards...1500 rushing yards...no real debate

Pollock was the only one trying to make a case against Jackson, and the only thing he had was 7 turnovers in the last 2 games. Didn't dispute anything else anyone was saying, just kept saying "7 turnovers in last 2 games."

And it was very lame...it was like he couldn't convince himself...lol

I've seen people try to make a case for Watson but I don't think you can justify that. Short of padding his stats last week, his season wasn't amazing and he played an extra game.

Jackson had 51 total TDs (30 pass, 21 rush) and only threw 9 picks.

Look at his stats and compare them to Tebow's Heisman year from 2007 and tell me they're not similar?

2016 Lamar Jackson
3,390 passing yards, 30 TDs, 9 INTs
1,538 rushing yards, 21 TDs

2007 Tim Tebow (INCLUDING BOWL GAME)
3,286 passing yards, 32 TDs, 6 INTs (154 yards, 3 TDs in bowl game)
895 rushing yards, 23 TDs (57 yards, 1 TD bowl game)

Show that to anyone who is against him as the Heisman.

Take away the "passing" yardage Watson has gained from the plays where he tosses the ball 6" to the RB or SR, and I doubt he'd even have the edge in passing yds on LJ.

Did Watson do enough vs Va Tech to steal the Heisman?
No. I saw where in LJs last 3 games he threw for 14 TDs and 4 ints. I think Watson in his last three games threw for 12 TDs and 4 ints. The perception though was that Watson really outplayed LJ or at least the media wanted us to think that.

I think this was also Watson's third year to refine his game, make himself more efficient, get his INTs down. Whereas this was really Lamar's first year starting from beginning to end.

Talking heads are paid to talk...

And to be intentionally argumentative. If everyone has the same opinion, it makes for boring TV.

^^ This. There is no consensus #2, so they would cannibalize each other. Lamar will be the only consistent name on the ballots. We're playing LSU in a Florida bowl and Lamar's wins the Heisman. Not a bad year for Card fans.

In my antagonist role (somebody has to do it), you've left out Lamars fumbles. It is a fact that Lamar did have 7 turnovers in his last 2 games. Most notably the fumble on UK's 10 with 2 minutes left. Probably cost us the game. Run off more time. Score a TD and the game is over. Kick a FG, then UK has to drive the length of the field in less than a minute and score a TD. FG does them no good. Odds of that are pretty slim

SB Nation this morning on the Heisman Race:

The Heisman Trust will release a list of finalists for the 2016 Heisman Trophy on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown in the 6 p.m. ET slot, about an hour after ballots come due.

At least three players will be invited to New York for a final ceremony on Saturday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN), when someone is going to win the 82nd Heisman, the award for college football’s most outstanding player. Since the ceremony became part of the Heisman unveiling in the 1980s, the average number of finalists has been four per year. Whether more than three players get invited depends on how close they are in the vote count.

This year’s race might not have much suspense. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson seized the frontrunner’s spot early in the season, and he’s stayed there all year. The Cardinals did lose their last two games, and that might create an opening for someone else.

With that in mind, let’s meet the candidates.

Definitely going to be a finalist and the favorite to win it all
Lamar Jackson, Louisville quarterback

Not even two years ago, Jackson was a highly touted but not earth-shattering recruit from South Florida. Now, he’s a superstar as a true sophomore, with a great shot to be back in the Heisman hunt in 2017. In 12 games, he accounted for 51 touchdowns (30 thrown, 21 rushed), more than anybody else. He was 11th nationally in passing scores, tied for fourth in rushing or receiving scores, and was the key cog in the nation’s top-scoring offense. Louisville didn’t make a big bowl game, but Jackson had as big-time a season as you could have.

Might get to join Jackson on stage and clap for him when he wins
Again, let’s emphasize that Jackson is almost surely going to win. Here’s part of an email I got from a sports betting PR agent last week: “The Heisman odds are currently off the board as the odds are astronomical in favor for Lamar Jackson. The Oddsmakers are currently in discussions on if they’ll be re-opened.” But if Jackson doesn’t win?

Tebow wore Orange.
Jackson Red and Black.

True, but guess who is tied with Lamar in fumbles-Deshaun Watson.

Even though I played antagonist for a minute, I think Jackson wins.

#2 is Watson.

#3 is Peppers.

If it was an award for most valuable player to a team it would be a very tough vote between Jackson and Peppers. The number of positions that Peppers plays and excels at is unheard of. Dude is all over the field tearing it up on both sides of the ball.

Jackson absolutely deserves the award and should win it easily IMO.

In addition to the incredible season he had, there isn't really a viable #2 candidate. Shouldn't be close.
