Grantham and Bulldogs run wild over Cats

MSU has only given up 7 points on a fluke play to the Cats today while scoring 38 with 6 minutes left in the game. Makes you wonder what our defense (and record) would look like if we still had Grantham as DC.

Grantham's defense has been up and down this year. Today, they've played well. Other games, not so much.

It makes me wonder what happened to Grantham’s defense here last November, giving up 581 yards and 41 points to the Mildcats on Senior Day.

Did anyone keep up with the injuries on defense last year? Granthams style is man to man and aggressive blitzing. We lost too many players to keep that up on a talent level. Blame Grantham for not recruiting talented enough subs, but not for the style when he has the players for his system.

Grantham wasn't as bad as fans thought he was--nowhere close--and they overreacted. So did Petrino.

You got Sirmon. Enjoy him...

Point conceded. I just wonder if we would have lost to NC St. and BC with Grantham as DC.
Todd is a very smart guy and a really good DC. In fairness, all DCs seem to live week to week.

I really liked the way our guys responded after last week. A side note: BC just obliterated a hot Virginia team in Charlottesville today.

I really think the team may have overlooked BC. If so that was a mistake. The days of looking past teams in the ACC are over. Any given Sat you can get beat if you don’t come to play

Really true about this current ACC. The Ga Tech-Wake Forest game and the Miami-Cuse games were both intense and fan worthy.

Love watching this.

You make it sound as if the message board fired Grantham - is that how it went down? I know the guy took heat but it wasn't like the entire community signed a petition to get him packing?

I always admired Grantham's performance - the defense was top 20 with him every season.

And you got Sirmon too. Unless you aren't a Cards fan anymore?

Georgia and Auburn butt raped them.
Right - because we all know that that the final score has everything to do with the defense and ZERO to do with the offense.

Georgia’s effing good the last time I checked - Auburn too. Shit happens in CFB - and there are no absolutes. You might want to factor that into your equation.

I think part of the problem for the Cards and the BC game was, the Cards schedule was front loaded with Clemson and NC St - two legit teams - Cards lost them both, and just lacked required motivation. I'm not sure if it's that they overlooked them, I just think they didn't feel like playing, and paid the price.

Everyone's got their little piece of the action. And coaches hear and react to more than one might expect. Petrino was looking for a scapegoat too. The problem is Petrino doesn't know how to fix defensive problems, he never has. And fans are totally clueless as well even though many think otherwise.

I didn't ask for a new DC, so my prayers weren't answered. I hope he succeeds because I hope the team improves. And because the coach and fans (and new AD) are clueless how to find a better guy than Sirmon...

Yeah, I’m happy for Miss. State for their ass kicking of uahkay, but we all need to remember that it was also his defense that allowed uahkay to beat us last November in OUR HOUSE.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Fans didn't like him and needed a scapegoat...
His scheme against Kentucky last year was all I needed to see, 10 men in the box? I'm still not over that shit show of a defense. I also am not in favor of what I've seen from Sirmon, but our recruiting on defense has been not so good since Grantham arrived here and Sirmon doesn't have a team of Charlie's players like Grantham had.

Ok, I think I'm figuring out where you stand on all this - and it's a fair position, it's just taken awhile for me to get it straight. Then again, maybe I'm off target. Let me know.

You're saying our guy has his warts, just like any other coach. But, his overall results have been pretty good, and fans need to realize the fix that is required is not an easy one, and it's a fix that may or may not happen.

The thing about Grantham defenses were they didn't get beat by bad offenses. The earlier post is correct his probably doesn't stop NC State but there is no way BC puts up 42 on his defense. That is the biggest concern with the current coach they can't stop bad offenses. They played much better, but FSU is a hot mess on offense. They played really well up unti that terrible roughing the passer call.

The only true way to measure a coordinator is can they recruit to their style and how does that team perform? Grantham didn't recruit well, people get on Bobby for that, but Grantham was paid to handle that side of the ball. He didn't and it would have caught up to him this year. With the talent Grantham had they performed as expected. He is a good coordinator and if he recruits well at MSU they will continue to be a good defense.

While there are obvious issues with this defense, IMO they are impossible to evaluate. That likely means the DC is getting another year. The main reason is they have recruited very well to fill the needs. The Dline has been addressed, good backend recruits room for another safety, 3 really good linebackers adding 1 or 2 linebacker would make this is a really good defensive class on paper. My expectations would be the defense next year would be better. We will have to see if they can maintain their recruiting. If they don't recruit well next year and they aren't better defensively it will be time to move on.

I agree that was an excellent game. And should have alerted our team to WF. Their not a pushover. It will be a challenge on the road.

Hold it there. If you're implying I'm team Sirmon, incorrect multiplied by a thousand.
Duly noted.

FTR, though I wasn’t in favor of letting Grantham go - I recognized that he had issues that needed to be addressed to justify his salary. I’m just pointing out that he’s better than sirmon by a thousand times and given that the two of them were apparently the choices - I’d take Grantham.

He was already let go verbally and had checked out.
That would make sense if that’s true but wasn’t Grantham still on the sidelines 5 weeks later when we got steamrolled by LSU in our Bowl game?

Unless I’m mistaken and we had an interim DC for the Bowl game, it would have been an incredibly bad idea to have a lame duck coach in that position for 6 weeks. Especially a coordinator.

Couldn't have said it better myself (although I recall trying a few dozen times!)

:p

That's really the only valid argument--Wakeyleaks--I've heard for letting Grantham go last year. And "valid" in the sense that it had less to do with how he was coaching the defense...

Take Grantham over Sirmon? Well, yeah. I'd take anyone over Sirmon.

I'm not done with Sirmon yet. The defense only gave up 14 points at FSU, they scored two easy TD's on fumble recoveries. The man has been coaching with NO D line size or talent. Losing Shortridge and Willaims in the off season was crippling. We have some serious size coming in next season, then I'll be the first on the "fire Sirmon" bandwagon if we don't improve. Hope is a good thing lol I wasn't a fire Grantham guy just thought he padded hs defensive stats aganst lesser competition and got exposed against the better teams but can say that about 100 other DC's as well.

The main reason he was let go was that Petrino and he hated each other. There are a variety of reasons how it came to that but the overiding thing is that both are hard to work for/with.

My only retort to that is how did they work together for three years if their relationship was rooted in hate?

How long did Charlie Strong and Mike Sanford survive together? Several months?...

Like many relationships, it didn’t start off that way but as they say - familiarity breeds contempt.
