they didn't get any defensive lineman.

Ok? I guess that's one way to field a winning team, no defensive line strength or depth.

Honestly, it just really wasn't a priority this year, because we return so many seniors. You can guarantee that it will be a big emphasis for the 2018 class.

For 2017 we have:
Seniors: James Hearns, Drew Bailey, D'Asian Richardson, Kyle Shortridge, Chris Williams, and Treyvon Young
Juniors: Henry Famurewa, Gary McCrae
Sophomore: G. G. Robinson, Jonathan Greenard
Redshirt freshman: Tabarius Peterson, Caleb Tillman, Kordell Slater (update - he has left program already), Marcus Walker (non-scholarship), Tyler Robinson (non-scholarship), Derek Dorsey (although I have heard he has been moved to offense).

I am of the belief that we need an immediate impact pass rusher at DE and what we've recruited at DT the last three classes is remarkably deficient...just Robinson if we're being honest among four year players.

would think we could find juco players at least. it is a serious area of need

Yep, the DL will be priority numero uno for 2018. Having said that, I like the class a lot. Got some much needed help on the OL.

Hearns, Young and Greenard are your top pass rushers. Hearns and Young are excellent when healthy - so that's the big concern there. McCrae probably fits into that category as well - we just haven't gotten to see that much yet. Not sure yet whether Famurewa is an end or a tackle - he looks like the type of player who could grow into a tackle.

I agree on the deficiency of interior DL recruiting ... but if we are being honest, it hasn't really been a priority. Petrino is a master of roster manipulation, and he knew that he had been given quite a gift from the Strong era in the form of Rankins (2 years), Brown (3 years), and Hearns, Richardson, and Shortridge (all for 4 years). So he primarily went to the JC ranks to add players like Vatuvei, Bailey, and Williams for depth.

There's no doubt that it will be a priority in 2018, however.

Possibly, if Trevon Young doesn't come back and play as well. Otherwise, with Young and Hearns, we're certainly good with our 1st team for 2017.

Considering the maturation of high school kids and their interest in coming in and competing immediately and even graduating in three years, the need to get kids in your program early has diminished. We need to land a D-line class in 2018 that's similar to this year's O-line class...

The bad of the D line is obviously the thin nature, but if they address needs with the D line in between now and Signing Day 2018 to the extent we saw with the secondary and offensive line that will be great. We were able to sell immediate playing time to those positions for obvious need...hopefully we hit an abundance of those targets in 2018.

...and it wouldn't hurt if there was a late addition like a Lorenzo Mauldin when USC jr. clipped his scholarship on Signing Day.

1 still have two schollies, more if there are non-qualifiers
2 you can move O-Linemen or TEs to the D-line.
3 you can redshirt a current D-lineman this year

Wish the Cards could have flipped Jarez Parks.

I'd also like to point out, despite the "m'eh" feeling of no DL, this class is the highest ranked class in Rivals recruiting history. Ranked 28th. Previous highest rated class was 2011, ranked 29th. It's a testament to changing expectations around here that we're all just "kind of excited" about this class.

Class rankings per year:

'17- 28th
'16- 36th
'15- 32nd
'14- 36th
'13- 41st
'12- 43rd
'11- 29th
'10- 51st
'09- 83rd
'08- 55th
'07- 42nd
'06- 37th
'05- 46th
'04- 70th
'03- 37th

Still have 2 spots to offer. I'm sure the Dline will be addressed in the coming days, weeks or months by a Juco we know nothing about.

I agree with this opinion. The next few weeks will tell us that very thing. I'm assuming (yeah I know what that means) that we'll be going the JUCO route for a couple of dlinemen.

I think next year we sign several DL, as that will be our main focus, even BP called that out specifically in his press conference for signing day. It does sting that we missed out on our handful of targets, but we will address it next year, if not with using one of our 2 open scholarships in the coming weeks.

I wouldn't be surprised if we land similar DL next year as we have this year on the OL. If we do that, I will be ecstatic.

The main thing with this class is that we addressed needs, and addressed them in a big way. Last year, we all know that the OL was need of an overhaul, we definitely did that, new coach and best OL signing class in the nation, imo. DBs were something we had a desperate need to not only bring in more talent, but to add depth (definitely saw this toward the end of the year with injuries), we addressed that without question. The WRs are big time, couldn't be happier. Landing Wilson in the backfield was a huge get, the only concern I have with him is his past injury, but he bounced back from that toward the end of the season, he has all of the tools you look for in a back, let alone the fact that he is a perfect fit for BP system and already has been working out of the read option/shotgun offense.

Next year, like I said, I fully expect for us to have the same reaction to the DL and LB recruits as we do this year with the OL. If so, we are stocking up for champion runs.

teams recruit a couple years out to be successful. I admire your glass, half full attitude but you guys will have graduate 5 of your 6 best Dlinemen after 2017, right?

REALLY tough to compete with jucos, under radar projects, and true freshmen.

Just look at GG Robinson....I read on this board a lot ( TPE) that he was going to be a stud as a RS Fr...did he have even five tackles? And he had a late offer from Auburn.
Just tough to compete against the best without deep and talented linemen. Your Oline recruiting was very good.. Dline...I would be very concerned if thst was my roster after next year..JMO

Jeeze Pike I'd think you'd have plenty to worry about on your own plate. Our classes were virtually identical in ranking and I know that I feel very confident with Bobby Petrino in charge. I wonder if you could intelligently say the same thing since you are a cayut fan.

I'm very good with out class. Botj of our classes were very good. Just different. We would have liked to pick up an stud Otackle, maybe an legit ILB and possibly another WR. But we picked up 7 Dlinemen and that was huge. A Couple really highly regarded ones. Having a legit Dline has been a perpetual struggle. UL hasn't had to worry about that since Strong brought in a bunch of talent.

We will have to sweet O tackle in a couple years and you Dline

Our coaches don't seem to be too concerned.

You are right mwatson61. That's because there was some depth at D tackle and also some youth. They may not be as good as they were in '16 but they will be okay.

So you don't need fresh d-line since you have seniors? I think it wasn't a priority because they missed on the couple they were going after. I'm sure they weren't going after the numbers like the OLine but to say it wasn't a priority because they have seniors? Not sure about that rationale.

They weren't that great in 2016. Not as good as 2015 and heading in the wrong direction!

I know the answer is always Petrino is a genius. This class was strong on OL and DB. Defense not so much. We are going to graduate a whole lot with no RS freshmen coming in to provide depth. We will be thin for the next 2-3 years.

Not sure where the depth and youth you mention is coming from. All I see is Robinson that's not a senior. But you know your roster better than me.

We missed on several Otackles the last couple of recruiting cycles and you missed on Dline with guys going elsewhere and not qualifying. Always going to be some holes. Dline is just a tough position. Everyone Wants the explosive, fast twitch big guys a d just not thst many of them out there

Maybe you should apply to be the recruiting coordinator so this won't ever happen again. Better yet....take over as Head Coach....yea, that's the ticket. You so bad.

You would likely turn down a million dollar gift cause you don't like the color green. o_O:rolleyes: Chronic complainers disease maybe?

Nothing wrong with complaints or questions. I see a need of putting pressure on the qb without the blitz. Hopefully we had some redshirts that are under the radar that will come in and produce for us.

We are all card fans with different points of view.

You nor I have any idea what the coaches think. What they say to the press is just PR stuff. Behind closed doors no one has any idea what they are concerned about and what they are not concerned about.
