55 FTA for the Cards?

I don't have time to research but can anybody remember the Cards getting THAT MANY FTA in a single game while under Pitino?

Any theories?

Nicholls was definitely more aggressive on defense than us but it’s because of Mack’s pack line defensive strategy much like Virginia’s. No gambling on defense that typically leads to easy baskets but also no steals, deflections, cheap fouls.

Nicholls pressed for most of the game much like we did under Pitino. Being undersized that also lead to a lot of fouls trying to guard Enoch and Williams.

I don't remember the Cards getting that many free throws anytime under Pitino.

In my opinion, the reason the Cards got so many free throws last night was because of Nicholls St. style of play. They pressed and were very aggressive on D. Nicholls had at least 4 or 5 guys foul out of the game and had several players with 4 fouls. While watching the game I was actually thinking Nicholls looked like Louisville under Pitino... not as disciplined.

The Cards also attacked off the dribble/basket a lot and not enough in my opinion.

We focused on going inside to score, whereas in the past we would kick the ball out for a three. And when we did, our added strength allowed us not to pussy-foot around with a weak shot. Nicholls' aggressive D played to not give up anything easy. Hence, the number of fouls.

I was particularly impressed by the lack of fouls called on the Cards. With CRP's emphasis on deflections and steals, players were constantly lunging and reaching which lead to a lot of fouls and a lot of foul trouble. Think back on how often our starters were saddled early with two fouls and thus relegated to the bench.

Part of this is by design, much like Virginia’s style of defense but also has to do with only 10 scholarship players..

I think I've heard Coach Mack speak about this coming into the season. There will renewed interest in getting to the line more, whether by looking inside or neing strong with the ball.
