It took 75 minutes to decide the match in Columbus yesterday, but the #4 Louisville Cardinals Field Hockey squad got a second-overtime score from Julie Kouijzer (pronounced cow-weiser) in the golden goal format, to defeat #19 Ohio State yesterday.

Another come-from-behind win for Justine Sowry's crew. The team were scoreless after a half of play and it was the Buckeyes who got on the board first -- a nice crossover from the top of the circle to the left side of the goal to make it 1-0 OSU with eight minutes gone in the third quarter.

The Cards were having troubles figuring out OSU's defense, but, opportunity presented itself when Katie Schneider took a pass from Julie Kouijzer in the circle and fired it home to even things up with eight minutes left in the contest. The Cards would get four more shots on goal in those final eight minutes but some staunch defense -- especially from Buckeye goalkeeper Aahilyah Hernandez -- kept the Cards out of the net.

Overtime in DI Field Hockey is a variation on regulation play. The squads can only use seven players and the time period is 10 minutes....or whoever scores first. I called this "sudden death" for years, before a university official mentioned I should not use a negative connotation on the scenario and go with the more "politically correct" term "golden goal"

Sure, whatever makes ya happy.

Anyway, back to the O.T action. The two squads played a ball control, defensive first overtime, with neither UofL or OSU getting a shot on goal. So, to the second 10 minute period they went.

Louisvville came out with an "attack first" philosophy and got off five shots on the Buckeyes squad in the first five minutes. It was Kouijzer, a junior from the Netherlands, who was there to take a rebound off a blocked goal shot attempt on the Cards first penalty corner of the overtime session and fire it back into the net past the out-stretched Hernandez for the game decider. The goal was Kouijzer's fourth of the season, tying her with Schneider an Mattie Tabor for tops on the team.

Coach Sowry's post game remarks:

"Every time we play Ohio State, it is a tough contest and can go either way," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. we had some great periods of play but also we became too frantic and went away from our typical possession play. Hats off to their goalkeeper who came up big for them. Overtime I was very pleased with how we controlled the play and ultimately were rewarded with a victory. It was another gritty performance by our team on the road."

Now at 9-1 on the season, Louisville Field Hockey might very well move up in the next DI rankings. #3 Northwestern lost to #10 Rutgers on Friday.

A great win for the Cards, but -- I do have to take the Big 10 to the carpet for putting this top 20 match on a pay-per-view, internet viewing option. They do have a Big 10 Network, ya know. What was more important for viewing on it Monday? Offensive linemen discussing Chaucer? The secret lives of WSOC officials? It was a pure and simple money grab by the Big 10 and their deprivation of not allowing more fans of Field Hockey -- or interested parties, in general -- is unacceptable .

The Cards return home to face #16 Wake Forest on Friday. All seven ACC Field Hockey squads are ranked in top 20 of the NFHCA Coaches poll.
