Another interesting article on the immediate future for colleges and universities... LINK

I wonder if an institution like U of L that has worked hard to get rid of the shackles of being a commuter school doesn't have a future grounded in that very type of student body. Does it really matter if Junior and the Little Princess don't fully experience what they and their parents were brainwashed into believing was the right way to get a college education?

Before we die off, they could always ask the people who know firsthand what life used to be like...

Colleges have been moving to online courses for a while now. In some ways I think it is good and in some ways I think it is bad. Students who go the online way will never experience the college life which in itself is a learning experience that will always be remembered. On the positive side they won’t have to experience professors and their political indoctrination. College could be like newspapers on their way out but unlike newspapers I think the colleges will survive.

Universities like UofL have also been moving away from “part-time” students. They are using the on-line classes to assist in that effort. They want to move away from these type students because there is generally a negative effect on graduation rates. And grad rates are where it’s at for university rankings. Also the acceptance rate percentages must actually decrease because entrance scores are improving so a school can be more selective. UofL has been moving this direction for years now and has made significant improvement in both areas but still has a lot of work to do.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

If this is one of the results of the economic debacle we face...

I like the notion of making education more about education--and not some sort of way of life or worse, an escape from reality.

Taking away free rides and increasing the focus on cost and value added will eliminate a lot of the stuff that has become "education".

Funny how until about 30 years ago, education was mostly about opening a book and studying. And figuring out a way to pay for it without government interference...

I am a UofL grad from the 80’s and commuted as did most of the student body at the time.

I have two kids who have graduated from two different universities in the past few years. I let both stay on campus, if I could do it all over no way I would go that route again. It was expensive and both could have handled the freedom better to put it mildly.

I'm a few years older, but exactly my point.

I fail to understand the benefit of the way things are viewed and done now esp. in a tangible sense--which is the world we will be evolving to. HARD money will be scarce...
