Dukie V. endorses Payne for job.

Perhaps the most clueless post on this thread is the one giving Payne credit for recruiting success at UK. The “One and Done” train was clearly a result of the World Wide Wes relationship with Nike and the the Nike relationship with UK. Calipari was the one coach in America that was willing to build his program on NBA talent out of high school, when conventional wisdom was leaning towards developing kids over 3-5 years.

Kenny presents himself well with people, and if you listen to those close to the UK BB program, Payne was most effective at managing the egos of the very young super-talented freshman for Calipari.

Kenny has the personality that is perfect for developing harmony in the locker room and on the campus, as the kids trust him.

If UL allows outsiders to pressure the school into hiring Payne, the fans will be disappointed when they discover that Kenny will not be able to recruit HS talent anywhere close to what UK did while Kenny was on staff.

Some could say much of the same about Mike Pegues credentials, but right now Mike is far more deserving of this opportunity and if UL negotiates this carefully ……. they could keep Mike in place as interim HC for another year at a very reasonable salary, and without making a long term commitment.
Basically you are saying Louisville is never going to recruit at the level. The most proven recruiter in this group of candidates with all the contacts in the world won’t recruit at Louisville. That is an entirely different point.

Keep in mind the Nike effect applies to all the potential coaches. Take away talent and the enormity for this program our list gets real small real fast.

We are screwed if whomever can’t recruit top talent. I don’t care who you bring in unless it is Pitino. They aren’t winning here without elite guys. Keep in mind Pitino wasn’t getting the elite guys either. He is just a hell of coach and developed players. Not sure that person is out there.

If that is the case by all means offer to Pegues. By the way we aren’t a top 10 program if what you believe is true.

So, our interim AD is being publicly pressured, and who knows privately, to hire Payne. He navigated Mack’s departure pretty well, but there’s still plenty to learn about him. Does he cave under pressure and go with Payne, or will he blaze his own trail? High drama for an interim.

Let’s stick with the actual results. He was the lead recruiter on multiple NBA guys. We know they all praise him from be a good teacher. We know he knows people on the college and pro level. We also know he is close with the biggest influencer….WWW.

All that and he still won’t be able to recruit to Louisville.

My god if he can’t recruit at Louisville who can?

Let’s argue about other things with Payne but not that he won’t recruit here. Because if that is true then we are doomed.

U of L, and programs like it, are way past hiring assistant coaches who are trying to become a head coach. The last assistant we hired was Denny and he mentored under an excellent head coach/teacher, John Wooden. Kenny Payne? Not even close. We need to find the money and bring in an older, experienced, stable existing head coach. (Young head coaches just can't handle the pressure in a program like ours.) There are plenty of them out there. We need to assemble a search committee, take our time and bring in the right candidate. We all can see our talent level in down vs. teams in the past, but we do have talent. It just isn't being coached and used in a way to be successful. Hate him or love him Rick would be getting a lot more from the guys we have currently. I realize there are not of a lot of coaches with his skill set, who are willing to leave their existing jobs, but make no mistake there are many very talented head coaches that would be successful here. I have supported the Cards since the late 70's and love this team like all the others in the past. Time to find the right man, and get back to level we are all accustomed to. GO CARDS!

Interim coach for more than a remainder of the season = a lame duck coach

For everyone that feels like UofL will be a job for only a proven, top of the line, experienced, and great recruiting HC.
Who is going to leave their current situations with those credentials that UofL can afford to match the salary, and afford the buyout???

None of the big name home run hires - we all know the names - took the Duke or Carolina jobs. To me that is evidence that none of those guys plan to take another college basketball position in their primes. They would only go to - or stay - in the NBA.

I'm not saying Duke and Carolina are way above us. The best of the best looked them over and said no. I think they are just not interested in moving to one of the destination schools in the sport.

What's left is a bunch of question mark coaches. As was already pointed out, Pearl was considered the star candidate and he's full of question marks and blemishes.

We just need to pick one of the guys available and hope for the best. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll turn the program around. If not, eject, rinse and repeat in a few years.

Some people just can’t get over the fact he was Associate Head Coach at UK. You can go hire Scott Drew who got run by Alabama last night. None of these other coaches mentioned haven’t proven anything either. Give me someone who can recruit NBA talent that takes care of a lot.
Good gosh. Baylor was missing their leading scorer plus Bama is no slouch defeating 3 Final Four teams from last year…

No Cycle, I am saying Payne was not responsible for UK’s successful recruiting; nothing more than that.
Kenny developed his relationship with Nike when he was a assistant at Oregon. The guy who started the company is Oregon’s biggest donor Kenny had all those connections when he went to UK.

Yes but the animosity towards him is real. Just read this thread. His head coaching experience doesn’t mean anything to me. If that is the criteria then Jeff Walz wouldn’t be here. They will hire who they hire and we have no say in it. The hate for a guy who wore the jersey and hung a banner is confusing to me.

It’s confusing? Pretty simple, really.

Rick Pitino on Louisville: “I’m hoping inside that they hire Kenny Payne. Kenny Payne is a guy that can unite all factions of Louisville…I won’t endorse him because that’ll be the killer for him, but if he wants it, I hope he gets it.” #L1C4

First of all - it’s someone supposedly quoting Pitino - and not a tweet or statement directly from Pitino. Second - that wasn’t even the tweet. Why did you feel you needed to enhance it? 🤔

I am sure on this board Pitino has some other agenda. He surely can’t think Payne is a good recruiter. Remember Payne is the only coach that has ever benefited from Nike.

I trust that you know that UL is not a Nike school; we are Adidas. Do you honestly believe his Nike connections are going to help him attract the same 5 star recruits at an Adidas school?

If any college in America thought that Payne could recruit UK level kids, he would have been offered more money than Pearl or Wade when he left UK.

Some on this board will lead you to believe Pitino offered Payne an assistant gig some time ago, but KP turned Louisville down. 🤷🏻

NIL will shift the power shoe companies have how much we don’t know.

What coach who is under the Adidas flag will be able to recruit here that fits all the requirements?

Actually Cycle …… your question leads to my position that UL leave Mike Pegues as interim HC until the chaos surrounding this University can settle down. No President, no AD and no resolution from the NCAA could result in one more bad decision with more unnecessary buyouts if the selection does not work out.

UL is very much a top 10, if not top 5 Men’s Basketball Head Coaching position; but we will not be able to attract the best candidate under the present circumstances at this time.

Curry, Davis and Ellis will have choices to make at the end of this season, and I believe the likelihood of all 3 staying at UL will be increased if Pegues remains as HC. Think about what happens to this roster if those three transfer, in addition to the graduation of Williams, Williamson, Locke and West ………. What top level candidate will want to assume this opportunity given the school’s present circumstances?

Me and you will have to agree to disagree. We have to move on from the Mack era. New blood is needed. I think Pegues will be very good down the road. The new coach needs his own people.

I think they can recruit at a high level. Not UK or Duke high but they can make a splash. If not it doesn’t matter wh

I think NIL could be huge if they get the corporate sponsors to jump in.

I am not sold anyone is a perfect fit. Anyone is going to have its warts. Not sure why people think Paynes shortcomings are worse than others.

Except it wasn’t C & P as is - you apparently added to it for some bizarre reason. Pitino not my hero - not even close. Sorry for you that everything in your life is filtered through the prism of if someone is black or white. It must be exhausting and I hope that you can some day get to the point where you stop projecting your regressive views on others.
