I don’t know how many have kept up with all the problems going on in the city of Memphis lately but they have some serious issues. On May 6th they had a brawl on Beale Street involving over 20 people it took 30 police officers to break it up. A month or so ago the the head of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce was rob and then killed. A little over a week ago a wealthy businessman in Memphis was in a meeting donating money to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. When he left the meeting he was robbed and then murdered.
I am sure everybody saw the news this week about the violence in Frayser. This is a suburb in Memphis and they were protesting the shooting death of a criminal by U.S. Marshals. The Marshal’s were trying to serve 5 felony warrants against the man when he rammed his car into a police car and then came out with guns. The car he rammed the police car with was stolen. He shot the owner of the car 5 times and then stole his car.
On the radio last week after the incident they were interviewing sheriff in charge for Shelby County. He said they were having trouble getting quality applicants in Memphis so they were going to start recruiting applicants from cities throughout the South. He said they were going to be in Louisville recruiting this weekend.

If you have any loved ones who might be interested tell them being a police officer in this city is not worth it.

I agree with you on that you can also add Jackson, Mississippi. Memphis has been in a steady decline since the late 70’s. It does seem as if the decline is moving quicker now.

Big cities in general have this sort of crud going on all the time. Another reason why I just can't live in a big city. I like the open space without the craziness of over crowded people getting on each others nerves.

Baltimore, St Louis, Detroit and New Orleans are the 4 worst for Murders per capita but it’s surprising to many that places like Los Angeles and New York have very low numbers of homicides per 100,000 people. New York is at 3 homicides per 100,000 and Los Angeles is at 7.1 per 100,000 people. By comparison Baltimore is at a staggering 58 per 100,000, Chicago is at 26 per and Louisville hovers around 17 per this last calendar year.

Here’s a list of the so called safer cities that have a higher murder rate than Los Angeles:

1. Omaha Nebraska 7.3
2. Honolulu HI 7.3
3. Fort Worth TX 8.1
4. Aurora CO 8.3
5. Orlando FL 8.3
6. San Antonio TX 8.4
7. Boston 8.5
8. Denver 8.5
9. Tucson AZ 8.7
10. Wichita KS 9.7
11. Minneapolis 9.9
12. Phoenix 10.0
13. Charlotte NC 10.0 (much worse this year)
14. Tampa FL 10.3
15. Fresno CA 10.7
16. Houston 11.7
17. DeKalb County GA 12.1
18. Dallas 12.5
19. Oklahoma City 12.5
20. Albuquerque NM 13.4
21. Jacksonville Fl 15.4
22. Nashville 16.5
23. Columbus OH 16.6
24. Atlanta 16.7
25. Washington DC 17.0
26. Oakland 17.1
27. Louisville 17.5
28. Indianapolis 17.7
29. Pittsburgh PA 18.4
30. Tulsa OK 18.6
31. Milwaukee 20.0
32. Philadelphia 20.2
33. Cincinnati 23.8
34. Chicago 24.0
35. Newark NJ 25.6
36. Memphis 27.1
37. Kansas City 31.2
38. Las Vegas 31.4 (inflated mass shooting)
39. Cleveland 33.7
40. Detroit 39.7
41. New Orleans 40.6
42. Baltimore 51.7
43. St Louis 64.9 (ouch)

San Diego, which is my favorite vacation spot is 2.4 homicides per 100,000.

Don’t let politicians, demagogues and fear mongerers tell you where it’s safe or dangerous. Have fun and see the USA past your backyard.

I rarely see crime where I live contrary to people thinking the East Bay is sketchy. Sure there’s petty things, but I saw far more violence in Louisville than I have in North Berkeley.

We were thinking about taking a trip out to SF late summer - but the wifey a little apprehensive she thinks the area has gone a bit downhill with homeless counts - you got any insight on that issue?

The big difference between Memphis and Louisville is that Louisville has more good parts of towns than bad parts. It is a shame how these cities that were once good are now bad. In a large part it has to be due to bad policies by the people in charge.

There’s a lot of truth here, bro. I’m afraid Louisville isn’t too far off from being like those other cities.

We make dumb decisions in local elections, don’t hold anyone accountable, have a joke of a criminal justice system and the police department is representative of the above.

SMMFH, it pisses me off, bro. We are the best undiscovered city in the country but can’t get out of our own way to show it.

Yeah. Stay in fisherman’s wharf or Russian hill. The marina is nice, as well as upper Nob Hill, Cow Hollow. Plenty of beautiful places with amazing history. People will always be scared of SF due to misinformation and lack of travel. Have fun, it’s awesome. The homeless issue is on Market and the Tenderloin neighborhood. Not a dangerous place even though the walking dead is prevalent in those areas. Go to any large city, and it’s all the same.

Over this past weekend, Louisville had 12 separate shootings with 2 fatalities. Don’t kid yourself, violence is prevalent everywhere.

Kid myself?

Bro, that violence goes right along with the dumb politicians, judges and prosecutors that we elect. There’s no credibility in the prosecutors office, in the courtroom, in city hall and a new scandal with the PD everyday, bro.

Can’t expect folks to respect the law or human life if the gatekeepers aren’t credible. Gonna get a lot worse in Louisville until we wake up and hold folks accountable, bro.

I replied to your post but the response was directed to a few including Cue and Kosmas, bro.

What scares me a lot more than a city’s violent crime rate is all the idiots out there that blatantly and consistently run red lights and the fact that the cops don’t even bother to look for that kind of stuff anymore.

Like they say in New Orleans, “the most dangerous thing you can do there is drive through a green light”. Getting that way in Louisville.
