Damn, these guys a 10th inning walkoff away

They lost A LOT from last years team. It may take a bit for them to get going. I think pitching and defense will be fine. Question is can they consistently hit the ball.

Sorry I meant to post this earlier. Didn't get to see the walkoff game against WVU but I saw both Saturday and Sunday's game. The key to this year's team is going to be if the bottom of our lineup can hit or produce and how good our weekend guys will be. Obviously, Filomeno struggled but the freshman (Strader?) came in for solid innings.

On Saturday, Funkhouser started off good and was hitting low 90's consistently. It seem though when he gave up a seeing eye single up the middle that gave the Citadel the lead, he lost confidence in his fastball and walked a few. Citadel threw a LHP against us and we struggled a bit. The kid Kay is a baller and has already solidified a spot in the lineup. Of course, Gardner is a beast, Rosenbaum needs to hit consistently to give him protection or else teams are going to walk Gardner. The run that gave Citadel the 5th run was an infield hit that Lucas was not able to make a play on. Don't know if Sutton would have made the play but it didn't matter anyway, we didn't score again.

Ruxer started off well on Sunday but gave up a few walks. We got staked to a 4 run lead because Delaware's pitcher couldn't find the strike zone and Gardner laced a bases loaded triple down RF. After that though their pitcher (again a LHP) settled down for 3-4 innings. The freshman Harrington came in relief of Ruxer but did not have a good outing. He gave up several hits but Delaware didn't score but 1 run. Rosenbaum is a little shaky at 1st. It was kind of windy but he misjudged an easy popup on Sunday. I was sitting very close to the field and I could hear Kay giving instructions to Rosenbaum on how to position his feet when taking throws. We did have a baserunning mistake (IMHO) on Sunday. We had a guy on 2nd base and Gardner laced a double to right center. I clearly saw that it was over the RF's head but I guess the guy at 2nd thought it was going to be caught. By the time he took off he was thrown out at home. Just don't think it should have been close.

Sturgeon was the other bright star for the weekend. Hit consistently all weekend and pitched the last 2 innings against Delaware. What happens though when he pitches is that it leaves our OF a little suspect. Gardner is probably not a great defensive OF but we need both his and Rosenbaum's bat in the lineup. White needs to hit to be the everyday CF. With Sutton back at SS, Lucas or Kay can move to the OF. I don't think we are as deep as we have been in the past but it is early and we have a lot of freshman.

Might be a need to put Gardner behind Rosenbaum so he can see better pitches and maybe get his bat going. Jeff is going to be steady I have no doubt. Chit, Lucas, Sutton and the catchers...they just need to be able to hit for average. Nothing spectacular just average. If they can't I agree that producing runs will be tricky.
