Payne also talks about defensive scheme versatility and possessing a roster that can do a lot of mixing and matching, which is something we discussed in this newsletter last week. Think zones, fullcourt pressure, halfcourt pressure, trapping, etc.

“I can do a lot of different things with this group,” he said.

So far the team needs to really work on the defense and their defensive intensity.

One thing I saw was that CKP went to a match-up zone that seemed to help somewhat against the Bellarmine scoring run. But they appear to mostly defend man to man IIRC.

Yes, the zone did seem to limit Bellarmine’s movement somewhat in the 1st half but was tricky because of how well they shoot it. It was a nice change-up.

It will be interesting to see what wrinkles he implements on defense. Need a good solid understanding of M2M principles to run any zone defense effectively. Their M2M was much better in the 2nd half against a tough offense to defend.

In the first half we were chasing continuously. We went to the zone but IMHO it was one of the worst zones I’ve every seen. Looked like they never practiced it. Things got better near the end of the game tho.
I’m sorry to be constantly negative about this team but this just doesn’t look like Louisville basketball AT ALL! I know we have to be patient but my gosh…right now it’s bad!!

The talent level is not very good but now that the ncaa is closed i expect the talent level to be much better next yr.

Funny when all the good players decided to stay at Louisville, how great the talent was until it was needed to be used as an excuse for Payne.
