I can understand our instate rival, UK, and Miss. St because of Grantham being there, and UofL does play Purdue this year. But why ban him from Notre Dame and WKU is curious.
Exactly from a guy who has supposedly "changed" from being a pr!ck?Grad transfers shouldn't be stopped from going anywhere - that's ridiculous. Pretty puzzling PR move from someone who knows how many people are looking for a reason to jump on him.
Updated- Wiggins appeals, Petrino allows transfer to Cowbell State. Everyone go have a cocktail. This long, national nightmare is over.
I'd be curious to know what the appeal process involves.
Well I would think the coach would need to present a valid reason for not allowing him to play there. Since they weren't on our schedule, I don't think just saying "because I don't want him playing for my former DC is good enough reason.I'd be curious to know what the appeal process involves.
So you think that UofL or any university should be able to tell a kid who has graduated where he can or cannot continue his education?Whining like a baby, apparently.
Not X, but I'll answer for myself... I like the grad transfer rule where a player with a degree is eligible to go anywhere he/she wants to play without delay. If Wiggins indeed has a degree in hand, he should be able to go to the program of his choice. So you think that UofL or any university should be able to tell a kid who has graduated where he can or cannot continue his education?
That's utter nonsense.

If Wiggins is/was subject to a transfer restriction, I don't think he should be arbitrarily restricted. And Petrino would probably say he wasn't. Unless/until we have Petrino's side of the argument--which we will likely never get--you can't make that call, whether he was being arbitrarily restricted. We have people here willing to make that decision, but no one really knows...
I agree . . . To a point. I do think a school should be able to limit a former player's (graduated) options as to where they CAN PLAY. This would limit those choices to those schools NOT on your schedule. But other than that the limitation should end with that codicil. As far as continuing their education they should be able to go anywhere they desire and I believe they do have that choice.
GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Not worried - I guess I just objected to your characterization that he "whined" in order to get an outcome that was reasonable. It is nonsense. It's also, apparently, within the rules. The kid got his way in the end. Nothing to worry about.
It really doesn't take a quote from Petrino to know why he put MSU on the list. Not X, but I'll answer for myself... What zipp is possibly referring to is the possibility that CBP and Grantham had a fallout in the middle of the season (which is believable since our defense didn't seem to change) and that Grantham knew he was leaving and secretly trying to recruit certain players like Shaq to leave with him. Only thing that would make sense. It really doesn't take a quote from Petrino to know why he put MSU on the list.
Shaq graduated. He should be able to go wherever he wants. I see the logic behind Purdue & UK, but Miss State is just f'ing petty. Absolutely nothing gained by that, it's unfair to Shaq, and an unnecessary PR hit. Why do it? Because he's pissed at Todd Grantham. Say what you wnt about Todd, but his players love him so I'm not surprised Shaq wants to follow TG there.
I am glad the ban on MSU was lifted. Stupid.
Not worried - I guess I just objected to your characterization that he "whined" in order to get an outcome that was reasonable.
Furthermore, I don't think that it's reasonable to restrict a kid who's graduated from playing at any school he chooses - including those on your future schedule. He's fulfilled his commitment and if he wants to go to a competing school - his former coach should have ZERO say in any of it.
OK, I'll play along... Suppose Wiggins did NOT graduate and Petrino gives him the OK to transfer to MSU. Then, the next day, two more players recruited by Grantham come into his office and ask for the same privilege...which because of the "PR hit" Petrino allows as well. Two days later, three more guys walk in, and you get the picture.
How is granting Wiggins a transfer to MSU now reconciled with that?...
I don't think that's the debate here because if it's a rule, it's a rule...To me, there's a very stark line between graduating and not. Shaq graduated from UoL, he should be able to go wherever the F he wants if they'll have him.
If Wiggins had not graduated then he falls under the traditional transfer rule and he has to sit a year before playing. That's not what Wiggins wants. He wants to play right away so he can be drafted. Playing for a previous coach who believed in you just makes it a easier transition.OK, I'll play along... Maybe but, that seems far fetched on a couple of fronts. First, I don't see Grantham planning to leave for school to take a half $1 million pay cut and second, if he was going to recruit players, you might think he would try to get someone who is actually a starter and or difference maker. Wiggins is neither of those. What zipp is possibly referring to is the possibility that CBP and Grantham had a fallout in the middle of the season (which is believable since our defense didn't seem to change) and that Grantham knew he was leaving and secretly trying to recruit certain players like Shaq to leave with him. False.Well, he did essentially whine when he took it to the press. He whined then got his way.
Barring him from going anywhere as a graduated student is restricting him - whether it rates your use of the word "hardly" or not.I made this remark in another thread on the subject, not knowing the issues here anymore than you guys do...
There are over two hundred FBS and FCS football programs, many of which could use a guy of Wiggins' caliber. Allowing him to freely transfer to 98% of them is hardly restrictive. And if I ever get Petrino's side of this issue, I'll be glad to make a more definitive call in Wiggins' favor.
I have no problem taking a stand on something when I have good info...
False.
The transfer ban list became public and espn contacted Wiggins to ask him about it. He told them the situation and it became more public. He then, appealed to the university as is his right as a student and the decision was changed.
If you consider that whining, then you don't know the meaning of the word.
I don't know conclusively that Petrino thought that he couldn't block Wiggins' transfer but was trying to do so anyway. And I think that's what some of you guys are alleging. That speculating assumes the following:Barring him from going anywhere as a graduated student is restricting him - whether it rates your use of the word "hardly" or not.
And honestly Zipp, you don't really have to have "good info" on this to know exactly what the situation was - Petrino simply trying to be a hard ass.
Who knows - probably leaked by the trump White House. How did the ban list become public? Also, when you use the term "it's not fair," true or not, that's a whine.
"I really don't know what's his state of thinking or why he chose to put Mississippi State on there. ... I have no idea why. It's really not fair."
Petrino does have the authority but shouldn't - nor should any coach. Petrino tried to block him from MSU for some reason - either to be a dick to Wiggins or Grantham, or both but shouldn't have.I don't know conclusively that Petrino thought that he couldn't block Wiggins' transfer but was trying to do so anyway. And I think that's what some of you guys are alleging. That speculating assumes the following:
I'll assume #1 is true as some are saying they know with certainty. But I don't know with any certainty that #2 is true although some of you guys probably think it should be. If presented with this explanation, I could easily accept that a coach like Petrino is so absorbed in his coaching responsibilities and maybe upset with the request that he thought he had that authority and wanted to exercise it. ...Authority which Petrino did not have if Wiggins had graduated.
- Wiggins has indeed graduated.
- Petrino knew that he couldn't block him in a transfer.
- He tried to block him anyway, which I'm calling a "bluff".
And to reason that Petrino tried to block him anyway, you'd have to conclude he was trying to bluff Wiggins away from one of those schools. In all honesty, do you think Petrino with everything else he has to worry about and on such flimsy footing, he would be trying to coerce Wiggins? That's a stretch. I think it was more likely an honest mistake--that Petrino lacked that authority--and he had no choice but to grant the request.
Too much conspiracy thinking going on. I think the more intelligent debate is should Petrino have blocked the request even if he had the authority. Although I've already said we're lacking the info to debate that issue to a logical conclusion...
I don't get it. Wiggins got his degree and wants to continue his education elsewhere while having a year of eligibility left to play football. He should not be punished for that. Bobby Petrino should not be standing in his way of going wherever he wants to go. This is absurd. I thought this newer kinder gentler CBP was different. Apparently he's still a huge prick after all. Very disappointing.
