"Coach Summers brings 37 years of coaching experience to the table and he fits the philosophy and direction of where this offense is headed."

This quote may mean little, but it makes me think that Coach Petrino wants to get back closer to the offensive principles that made him considered an offensive genius. While I doubt we will go back to the power spread, I wouldn't be surprised to see a return to a more physical form of football. To be honest, I would like to see the offense more closely resemble what Clemson was running this year. They had Watson being much more judicious when he ran the ball and they had Gallman providing a physical running presence.

I think we'll see more wr sets that include slots and splits to BOTH sides with the TEs being used for quick short passes. That way Lamar (and his successor) will increase their percentages. Plus giving them more running lanes as the defenses have to account for all of our receivers. I'm still not sure why that wasn't the situation this past season but it is what it is. I'm seriously looking forward to next season now and I would think Lamar and the other qbs are also.

Agree 100%. We should spread the field which will open running lanes for Lamar in the middle of the field. I'll take my chances with A linebacker trying to spy Lamar.

Our rbs should also be more successful because they will find themselves in more one on one situations. Maybe I'm being a little too optimistic but I'll take my chances with a new "offensive set".

I have no idea what to expect at this point. But if the head guy is willing to sack assistants he just promoted and/or gave lucrative contracts to, he's also willing to move a Heisman-quality player into a different role.

Hope the guy knows what he's doing, but I'd say nobody out on Floyd St. is safe at this juncture...

I've been wondering about this IF Jackson does not progress in his progressions. :D

But then someone said Pass STILL needs a lot of work too.

So.....who is the QB coach again?

Hard to go through progressions when you have a putrid offensive line and the play is hell mary or bust.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Brohm was the QB we had a lot more quick hitters followed by power runs. I would like to see the offense primarily be made up of quick outs, slants, and crosses with a running game more focused on the running backs and the occasional deep shot off of play action. This seems like the offense that Clemson tends to run and it has been consistently in the top 10 or so over the past 7 years or so if I'm not mistaken. The deep shot is good when it works but it is a low percentage play. We need to call higher percentage passes and run the ball with the RB a little more IMO.

The deep shot becomes a higher percentage play when the defense has to cover the whole field for sure. LJ (and possibly BP) were victims of their early game success in finding guys wide open on the post route on opening drives. With the exception is Syracuse, the got fooled into thinking it would always be there.

Hope they both learned their lesson.

LJ needs to learn to get better touch on those passes. Too many " rocket balls". Brohm could make all the throws.

I'm ready for some "Feed the Studs"! We just need to get us some of them studs. Especially on the O-Line. Need us some Jason Spitzes, Brenos, Woods, etc.
That is exactly the situation. You simply cannot "out coach" every team every year. And as you climb the ladder in terms of competition the bar for "studs" is also raised. Consider...

Year Record Rank SOS v. Top 30
2003 9-4 #63 #104 0-1
2004 11-1 #5 #82 1-1
2005 9-3 #22 #68 0-2
2006 12-1 #5 #27 3-1
Total 4-5

2014 9-4 #30 #45 0-3
2015 8-5 #34 #35 0-4
2016 9-4 #22 #54 2-2
Total 2-9

(The above stats are from Sagarin Rankings.)

Clearly there was a substantial difference in competition between CBP 1 and CBP 2. Assuming coaching is the "same", better competition requires better players to achieve or maintain similar results.

In retrospect, 2016 was a "feed the studs" year. The problem was the only offensive "stud" (relative to the competition) was Jackson. Outside of Jackson we had a pretty mediocre run game (i.e., fumbles and O-line play) and the passing game suffered in all 3 areas (QB accuracy and pocket presence, WR's ability to get open and, of course, protection).

When 1 play is so integral to your offense I think it is very important to have complimentary plays. FWIW, I thought we "force fed" the spread option into an offensive system that simply did not incorporate many of the plays and motions that compliment the spread option play itself. And that is a coaching issue, not talent. JMO

Peace

I think you will see a lot of potential Jet sweep motion in our offense this year. I say potential because they will only hand it off to the receiver 3 or 4 times out of 20 to 25 plays. I think we will do this because the defenses "bunched" the middle of the field on us last year making it hard to run or throw. The threat of the Jet sweep will widen the defense. I also suspect they will work very hard on throws to the flat. We did not do that much last year and when we did Lamar was not very accurate with the throw. We have to get bodies out of the middle of the field. When we do the big plays down field will come.
