The #3 University of Louisville women's basketball squad is in Chapel Hill, NC today for a contest against the #23 UNC TarHeels tonight.

Louisville is 22-2 on the season and 13-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. They are on a seven-game winning streak, which is the longest streak in the ACC.

With the 73-47 win over No. 18 Notre Dame on Sunday, the Cardinals improved their record to 6-2 against Top 25 teams. Over the past five seasons, the Cardinals are 29-14 against AP Top 25 teams.

North Carolina enters Thursday’s matchup with a 19-5 overall record, 9-5 in ACC play. UNC started the season with a bang, winning their first 13 games but they are are 6-5 in their last 11. Good ol' ACC play... They are 11-1 at Carmichael Arena with their lone defeat, a 66-58 loss to NC State. The TarHeels built up a six-point lead against the Wolfpack in their second meeting by halftime, but NCST came back to 66-58. Their first meeting, in Raleigh, was a blowout win for the Wolfpack 72-45. UNC ranks second in the ACC with 74.3 points per game, while giving up 54.2 points per game, which ranks third.

North Carolina leads the ACC and ranks third in the country with a plus-20.2 scoring margin. They also lead the league and are fourth in the country with a 33.9 field goal percentage defense. Other notable numbers are being tops in the ACC in free throw attempts (483), free throw makes (343) and turnover margin (+6.0).

The Tar Heels feature four double-digit scorers. Deja Kelly averages 15.9 points per game, which ranks fourth in the ACC. Alyssa Ustby (13.1 ppg), Eva Hodgson (10.1 ppg) and Kennedy Todd-Williams (10.0 ppg) also average double figures. Kelly leads the conference with a 86.7 free throw percentage and ranks second with 91 made free throws. Ustby leads the ACC with 11 double-doubles, ranks third with 8.7 rebounds per game, and ranks sixth with 1.8 steals per game and a 45.7 field goal percentage.

They last met on Jan. 28th, 2021. Olivia Cochran scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half to lead top-ranked Louisville, and the Cards held on to beat North Carolina 79-68. The Cardinals made eight of their first 10 shots to take a 21-9 lead in less than six minutes and built a 67-35 lead late in the third quarter. UNC made things interesting with a 17-0 second-half run, though. They got it down to an eight-point deficit with 1:18 left, but they could not get any closer.

The Cards are 8-3 all-time against UNC and they have won eight straight games. All eight wins have taken place since the Cards joined the ACC. They are 3-0 in Chapel Hill.

Back to Bally Sports for this one, a 6 p.m. tip. I'll be tuning in for Nick Curran and Adrienne Johnson's call on Cards Radio 790 WKRD AM...having to work tonight, If you don't have Bally Sports Network, you're out of luck for viewing this one on TV. It will be blacked out on the ESPN app and website.

Sonja I may be wrong but I believe the game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.

We are doing a lot of substituting early I guess the plan is to push the pace and wear out UNC.

Up by 5 at the half we are still a little sloppy with the ball. The scoring is well distributed we still have to work on passes. Olivia needs to work on better hands. We are substituting early and frequently with the same rotation of players. I like it because we are going to need a strong bench in the tournament. It will be interesting to see if UNC runs out of gas in the 2nd half.

Down to this last possession. Refs have really let UNC play physical down the stretch and have eaten their whistles. Cards have just simply missed too many layups tonight.

I think we let them hang around to long and they took advantage. The first half when Kiana and HVL were knocking down shots was impressive. Kiana cooled off because of foul trouble HVL kept pace. I was really hoping that HVL was going to drive the lane at the end and create a shot. In close games we can’t afford to miss layups and we did.
It gives us something to work on layups, passing and better offensive rebounding. I thought Liz was off her game tonight she was a little slow and didn’t make an effort to go after loose balls. We have time to correct things and be a better team than we already are. No worries.

KS WASNOT knocking down shots…3-13. Did have 9 assists, but she has to score. We weren’t sharp all night. EE had better get her temper under control. Nobody played well…

KS did not have her best game. Threw the ball away several times very uncharacteristic of KS. Of course she wasn’t alone Emily wasn’t hitting 3 either.
Actually no one was killing it from outside. Congrats to UNC they fought for it.

I love Emily, her passion for the game and her athleticism! We are a far better team because of her. I am concerned that her passion at times devolves into comments out of frustration that result in Technicals. There aren’t that many refs in WBB and I’m sure various players’ reputations are known by the officials. It could be that given one’s reputation, an action or word draws a quicker response from an official than might otherwise occur… it’s just simple human nature. Hope she gets it under better control, especially with the post season nearly upon us. She’s a great player who needs to be able to stay in the game.

The Ts can’t happen, but she also is prone to ridiculous fouls. Reaching out and hacking a player out of frustration too. It’s a maturity deal and as a senior she should have already figured that out. She plays with the same passion Sam Fuehring played with. For the most part Sam had it under control by her senior year. Emily has to get it very soon.
Having said all that I would take 10 of Emily. Because it’s always better to have have horse you have to say wow to verses getty up.

Couldn’t agree more, CF! I also like the analogy of “Wow!” vs “Giddy Up!” Very appropriate! 👍👍

This loss hurts. Virginia Tech is next on the schedule and they are in 3rd place, one game back. We also have a tough ND at their place at the end of the season. Regular season championship is probably out the window but we may not have passed NC State anyway. Let’s see how this loss affects our ranking.

Sometimes a late-season loss can be a good thing. Yeah, we hate losing, but that attention getting event can be used by good coaches to refine a team’s energy and focus. In some teams, a loss can also have the opposite effect, but I don’t think that’s who this team is - we have a really good team and great coaches! As Coach Walz said, “…when we are dialed in, we are really, really good!” I expect the team will indeed be dialed in for Sunday’s game against VT. It’s their last home game (until hosting in the NCAA) and the ladies will be focused on doing things well. Hope we win out the season now!

I think the thing that bothers players are the same things that bother fans. They will call a touch foul on you but they won’t call a foul at the other end when you get your head knocked off. They don’t call moving picks which gives the offensive team a big advantage ( Notre Dame) is guilty of this. I also think the refs get caught up in the excitement of the game and some calls are made that shouldn’t be made. The refs just need to call the game based on the rules.
I am not defending Emily or any other players but something needs to be done to improve the refereeing. I don’t think we lost the game because of the refs but UNC did have a big advantage from the foul line in such a close game.

I don’t think it will effect the Cards’ overall ranking. The other day it was mentioned if UofL lost to UND they’d still be on the #1 line. They lost by 1 point, on the road and to a ranked team.

It's a common mistake that people make but the one word that really perplexes me is the word lose. I see far too often people spell it loose. It's just looks so wrong typing my team shouldn't loose this game.

While I may have said ranking, I actually meant seeding. You have to be in the top 4 or 5 to get that #1 seeding, which is a big advantage in womens play.

Engstler is an enigma. I'm sure Jeff has talked to her until he's blue in the face but she continues to do dumb things. Don't get it. Reminds me of Grayson Allen at Duke and in the pros. Never stopped tripping and taking cheap shots.

I have seen Emily come out of a few games where she would argue with Jeff. Her tattoos suggest to me that she may have grown up in a tough neighborhood, which explains her physicality and her attitude. I love her assertive style and her performances; she can literally dominate a game when she is under control.

I suspect that she knows that her Technical costs her and her teammates the game; which could very well result in powerful teaching moment for this supremely talented young lady.

My fear is that loss could result in dropping us to a 2 seed. Several teams capable of jumping up into that coveted spot.
