Louisville women's basketball returns to the KFC YUM! Center for a Sunday noon contest against the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. The game will be shown on the ACC Network and can also be heard on Cards Radio 790 WKRD AM.
It's the third OVC opponent Louisville will face this season, the Skyhawks were picked to finish first in the conference and this will be their first game of the 2020-21 season. They return 13 players from a 2019-20 roster and have added former standout Seygan Robins from Louisville to their roster. The Skyhawks went 22-10 last season and took the Cards to double-overtime in Martin before losing 71-63 on Dec 19th.
Damiah Griffin went for 25 points and 10 rebounds in the contest last year against the Cards, and she retuns -- along with a pair of 6'2" senior forwards in Chelsey Perry (23.1 ppg) and Maddie Waldrop (12.7 ppg).
The Skyhawks averaged 70 points per game last year and gave up 63.
So, without any prior 2020-21 game action to evaluate and scout UT-Martin on, it would seem that the Cards would just focus on things they do well (score, run, rebound and defend) and try to improve on a couple of areas that drew the ire of Jeff Walz after the DePaul win (silly fouls, turnovers)
Kianna Smith's sparkling debut as a Cardinal against DePaul has some wondering if she'll join the starting line-up, after coming off tthe bench Friday for 21 points in 22 minutes. More important is, if the contest is a close one, who will Jeff Walz want to have out on the court in the crucial, final fourth quarter minutes?
UTM would be advised not to get involved in a "run-out" with Louisville and the visitors may go zone to try and slow the Cards WBB squad down. Perry, Waldrop, Griffin and guard Kyanna Grant look to most likely draw starts for Kevin McMillian's squad and it's possible Seygan Robins could join these four as a starter. All told, UTM has four players from Kentucky and also four players from Memphis, TN.
UTM was scheduled to start the season on Dec 8th at Samford, but when Bellarmine cancelled the Sunday game against the Cards WBB squad, Jeff Walz contacted the SkyHawks and they agreed to come to Louisville for the game.
It should be a fun one for the #5 Cards WBB squad in their final (at least for now) non-conference contest. Louisville (3-0) starts ACC play Wednesday. Dec 9th. when the travel to Duke for a (for now) scheduled 7 p.m. start that is listed as being on the RSN Network.
