The Louisville Cardinals women's basketball team heads to Boston College for an 8 p.m. re-match against the Boston College Eagles tonight. B.C. is the first team in the conference that Louisville has played twice.

Back on Jan. 14th., the Eagles suffered an 89-70 loss to Louisville. That was a game where Kianna Smith went to the floor with an ankle sprain, Hailey Van Lith dislocated a figure and the five starters for Louisville (Evans, Van Lith, Cochran, Balogun and K. Smith) all finished in double figures.

It hasn't been a season to remember for the Eagles. They sit last in the ACC when you look at the 13 teams still playing -- with a 1-7 conference mark. That lone win came against Notre Dame 64-61 back on Jan 7th. BC went on a 22-11 fourth quarter run to get their lone ACC win. Since then, the Irish got revenge by beating BC 83-73 back on Jan 17th.

That Jan 17th. game was the last time the Eagles have taken the court in competition. Games against Clemson, Pitt and FSU, all scheduled to take place in the Conte Forum on campus were postponed. A road trip to Miami was also cancelled.

True freshman guard Allie Palmieri was scheduled to join the Boston College program in the fall of 2021. The Trumbull, Conn. native decided to graduate from high school early and has joined the BC program for the remainder of the 2020-21 season. She is the second freshmen on the roster to join the team after graduating from high school early, joining fellow rookie Ally Van Timmeren. You might remember Van Timmeren, she had 17 points against the Cardinals in the previous meeting to lead the way for B.C.

The Eagles have a rather unique roster with five freshmen, one sophomore, five juniors and no seniors.

The Cards need this one at this time in their schedule. Coming off the NC State loss, a "feel-good," blowout win against someone is what the doctor would order to get Louisville back on track. A chance to build a significant lead and get Konno, Parker, Ahlana Smith and Russell some meaningful minutes on the court. Let's hope that can happen.

You never really know how a team is going to respond after a loss, or what a head coach might do.. Remember last year, when the Cards fell to Ohio State in Columbus and Walz shook the starting lineup dramatically in the next outing at NKU -- with Laemmle, Dixon, Diop, Dunham and Evans ?

If the Cards can follow the script of the last time they played Boston College (minus the injuries, of course), let's hope for a strong, first quarter start, containing Taylor Soule, the best player on the Eagles roster, and getting the transition game working. I've no doubt Coach Walz paid particular emphasis on rebounding in practice since the NC State game, so I'll look for improvement there.

We'll see tonight. It's an ACC Network game and you get Jenn and Deb on the call. I'll spend my game night experience listening to Nick and AJ's call on Cards Radio 790 WKRD-AM, since I'm working.

Sonya, your pre-game report was not only “a good read”, it was a bit prophetic. My post here is directed primarily to you, but I would be interested to see if others garner any of the same questions as I have about CJW‘s rotation.

Judging just by the box score, it makes me question why Walz is not playing Parker, Russell, and A. Smith more in the rotation? Those ladies were the most efficient in terms of minutes played last night, as compared to the starters. Cochran has been awesome all year, but her defensive performance against Cunane was predictable; it would seem like Parker could have helped relieve Olivia the defensive responsibilities on Cochran, and allowed Olivia to contribute more on the offensive end. Sometimes a fresh set of legs with long arms can force an offensive threat like Cuname to adjust their game.

The 15 rebound advantage by NCST may have been just a “freak”, but I thought our girls were slow on the defensive end in the 3rd and 4th quarter, and could have used some relief in the 1st half. No team can overcome a 15 rebound disadvantage.

Good question, 2330858. Last night may have been a positive mandate in getting these three more time on the court for the Cards in the upcoming February contests. We don't see what transpires in daily practices for this 17-1 team, Walz has his reasons for what he does I would surmise, but necessity was the mother of invention last night against a 5-7 Eagles squad -- since two starters were absent.

Depth against BC in playing time doesn't mean the same policy will be effective against upcoming games against Note Dame and Georgia Tech, but, Walz always says that good performance in practice equals time in games and the 22 points and 10 rebounds from the trio showed that the ability is there Of course, it was against a rebuilding BC squad that only went eight deep and relied on basically two high school seniors for 45 minutes.

We'll see.
