It wasn't a easy romp in "the flats" for the #3 Cardinals Volleyball squad yesterday, but they did take Tech down in three sets. A one-sided, first set 25-15 opener, followed by a exciting 36=34 second set and very close 25-23 third set.
Yes, it looked like the Cards were ready to blow the Ramblin' Wreck VB squad off the road in the first set, but, (11-3, 2-2) GT has been a tough opponent to defeat this season for visitors to O'Keefe Gym.
That second set was spellbinding, the Cards trailed most of it and it looked bad when the YellowJackets grabbed a late 24-21 lead. Louisville refused to take an "L", though and two blocks and a kill later, had knotted it up at 24-24.
A back-and-forth, lead exchanging 22 point sequence followed. With the score 34-34, Cardinals middle blocker Anna Sttevenson took over, with a kill and then block to give the Cards the set victory.
Louisville facd anther tough battle in the final set. The Jackets got out to a 4-1 lead early before the Cardinals made a 6-0 run with freshman Elena Scott serving . GT used (and needed) a timeout to chill Scott and it worked as the Cards committed a service error coming out of the break. UofL had a 5-2 run to go up 12-7 but GT pushed back to come within one at 15-14. Up 22-17, the Cards withstood a last-gap GT rally...the Jackets pulled within two at 24-22 on a kill by Bianca Bertolino. Louisville said "Bring on deBeer" though and Anna connected with Dilfer's set for a resounding kill that provided set and match point.
Cards return to LNFCU for Friday and Sunday matches against Boston College and Syracuse.
14-0. How far can they go? From this observers eyes -- to the Final Four and more!
