On a picture perfect, if slightly warm, Sunday afternoon -- 36 Louisville Field Hockey improved to 6-0 with a 3-1 win over the visiting Liberty Flames. Another top 15 win for Justine Sowry's squad -- three different players accounted for the scoring.
Louisville Sacred Heart senior Mackenzie Karl got her first career goal in the UofL win and the Cards got seven saves from freshman goalkeeper Mila de Kuijer to complete the weekend sweep of foes.
Louisville posted two first half goals to lead at the break before allowing an early fourth quarter Liberty score. The Cards countered with a third score midway through the fourth, though. Aimee Plumb got her first goal of the season off a penalty corner for the "insurance" score.
Justine Sowry gave credit to the Liberty squad for being a tough opponent and also credited her squad for adapting to the Liberty change in offensive tactics in the second half:
"...they were definitely on top of us and we made a couple of errors in the fourth quarter. Thankfully, we were able to get a little bit more poise and composure on the ball and we were able to put another goal on the board."
It doesn't get any easier for the Cards coming up this weekend. Louisville hosts ACC for Virginia Frida, who sits at #10 in the latest NFHCA Coaches poll. Then, on Sunday, #2 Iowa comes to town.
Admission is free for Louisville field Hockey this season, Why not get down to Floyd Street early on Friday, if you are planning on attending Cardinals football, and cheer on a top #6 squad in the Cardinals.
