Everything that is wrong with this team stems from the offensive play calling. Satterfield simply doesn't understand how to effectively use the talent he has on offense.

The defense has been great and deserves better from the offense.

It is sad that we had two weeks of prepare for this game and couldn't move the ball on offense.

I'm very happy we won. We have become a defensive team due to our great pass rush. If we could ever get into a rhythm on offense we may shock some people.

We prepared alright. We prepared Satterfield's plays.

There's no argument about Satterfield the offensive play caller. There is simply way too much video of his predictable offense.

Cards have a lot of injuries @ WR and what's up with the TN transfer RB? Cunningham also dealing with injuries too.

I don't know if you're ever going to see the offense rolling, lots of guys in and out of there.

They got back to what they have done well, which is run between the tackles. Pitt shut it down in the first half, but much props to the offensive line for getting the job done in the second half. 👏
I didn't think there was a shot in hell of sustaining anything offensively unless they could start opening holes.

Evans is hurt as well. It's true the offense has been hit with a bunch of injuries but our depth is pretty good. Mitchell has hardly played and he had almost 500 yards rushing last season.

Just got to get Malik some confidence with his throws.

I like our depth too. Just wondering if it's a continuity issue. Especially when they are shuffling the QB now.

There were a few time when I too questioned the play calls on offense, but it is becoming apparent that it is far more about the limitations of our skill position players and their execution, than it is about play calling. Even on a number of Malik’s completions, they were under-thrown and relied on his receivers to out maneuver the opponent’s DBs. The critical pass to his TE for the TD was under thrown.

For those on this site, we were treated to what some of us believed was a strong possibility going forward; specifically where there was an opportunity for Doman to contribute at QB in place of Malik, and secondly how effective one play in a close game can be, when Malik was the recipient of a screen pass that went for a long gain at a critical point in the game.

This team is battling courageously through a lot of injuries and there have been some kids who have really stepped up. Malik is a warrior!

Mrs. Cunningham?

There were a handful of read option plays that Malik flat out missed the read, keeping the ball (a la LJ) that would have been big hitters. Idk
He's a bit limited throwing it so just be the best version of #3 making that ground game go.

I will say they are tough to watch at times, but they do play hard. I am not a Malik fan as a QB however they haven’t been lucky with their WR.

They lose Watkins and Harrell option 1 and 2. They bring in 2 transfers and a really good recruit at the slot receiver. The recruit isn’t admitted and they lose 1 transfer to injury. Huggins Bruce was out yesterday.

Depth is a problem. They don’t and won’t have a bunch studs on the sidelines to replace starters. Think about all the transfers 3 of their best are out. Louisville just doesn’t have the luxury to replace without losing something.

Patience is needed.

But….but….but…..MALIK CAN NEVER BE A RECEIVER!!!!! He’s played QB for too long and couldn’t possibly ever become a pass catcher! You DID NOT see Malik catch a screen pass and turn it into a 33 yard gain last night! That was just a hallucination!

It's a miracle we won that game lastnight with all the bad reads and missed wide open receivers by Malik but the RB's and WR's made some terrible drops yesterday, some of that was on Malik for poorly placed passes but most were just flat out drops. Cooley dropped one with nobody within 10 yards of him.

That was a trick play. Wasn't exactly running a WR route. What are you 12?

So what? BTW…a screen is a WR route. And, I have been saying Malik could do this and they should get him the ball in space anyway they can. You said Malik can’t be a WR. You said it was too late for him. You said it couldn’t be done. I said it could be done and by golly they did it! Trick play? Maybe, but in the end it was a play that ended with Malik in the position of a WR and it worked.
On another topic, you need to get some counseling. People (like you) feel the need to demean others so they can feel better about themselves. This is the result of extremely low self esteem. Putting others down through word or deed is an attempt to make one’s self feel better about their own deficiencies and inadequacies. They have no other means to really feel better about themselves because the lack talent, skills or knowledge. This is why you label others opinions as “ridiculous“ or you need to make comments like “What are you 12?”. (BTW, this sentence needs a comma, but like I said….lack of knowledge). So, really, there are some very good mental health professionals out there. I suggest you find one.

Malik really struggles to read the option. Opposing coaches know that and mix up the player he has to read (LB, DE, CB) and it is terribly effective. That, coupled with Malik’s strong arm but inconsistent accuracy make this offense overly dependent on big plays. A healthy Tiyon Evans or Jalen Mitchell would help a lot since they can run between the tackles, but Evans is hurt and Mitchell is played only sparingly right now (possibly also injured?). Even then, they need Malik to read the option better and just put the dang ball in their bellies more frequently.

If this is the case then Satterfield should ace the read option and adjust the running game. This is his weakness as a OC. His inability or refusal to adjust to what the defense is doing.

Somebody has to convince him that he's the target. Just watch the film. They are drawn to him like flies on $%#^
The play is there if he'd just make the read. In other words, he's the perfect decoy because defenses fear him on the edge more than anything else. Just do what's needed for the team.

Easier said than done. The HB room was deep, but Evans and Mitchell have both been hurt. That, along with MC’s relative inaccuracy, has crippled the offense.

Damn. Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought we won this game. I guess I was just having a wishful thought moment. :)
And I love winning. We've got to get the offense going no matter how banged up we are. Next man up. I want another one 😀

If Stupes can win at LPT, there is a God, and anything is possible.

As much as I disapprove of how a lot is done at U of L in 2022, the last thing I’m doing is rooting against Satterfield. And the last thing we need is failure and more drama at a head coaching position.

Somehow the dumpster fire needs to be put out…

The key to maintain success is having a defense that is consistently good. All the good Louisville teams have had a solid defense. Good defenses keep you in games even when the offense isn’t clicking.

Louisville starts making real progress when recruiting improves on that side of the ball. I am not a Brown fan but his system has worked. Based off performance when they play average offenses they perform at a high level. Good offenses they struggle. That tells me talent is lacking to run his system.

Wake, Clemson and UK are good offenses it probably isn’t going to be pretty. I don’t think the offense will be able to keep up. I think Wake is the best shot at pulling of upset.

They beat Wake, JMU and NC State hold the class together he will get an extension. I can’t see them beating Wake though.

Realville: I think you missed the point that some of us were trying to make about using Malik as a receiver, and more specifically how affective and timely it was when he was the recipient of the trick play.

It was not just about “tricking” the defense, as it was about getting Malik in open space where it reduced the chances of him being injured from a “blindsided hit” on some more conventional slot route.

For the many reasons that have been repeated on countless threads on this site; Malik is limited as a passing QB in or outside the pocket, and this roster is equally limited with experienced receivers, which translates into why this offense is largely about our talented running backs hitting between the tackles and Malik using his incredible athleticism to scramble for huge gains.

Satterfield‘s questionable play calling is a direct result of the limitations this roster offers, and why he has been trying to employ Doman at QB.

I have not missed the point, I just don't agree. At least not in the middle of the season. Now if Malik had another year of eligibility, maybe he could make the position change during the off season?

He would have the time to learn and practice being a receiver. I could buy that even though I don't think he would be some incredible receiver. But in no way would it be a smart thing to make the change after 6 games and expect that he would just excel because he's a great athlete.

One trick play to get the ball when the defense is fooled is not evidence of a successful position change. If the Cards had a freshman back up QB who has a promising future, I could see benching Malik and utilizing him as a occasional wildcard QB. But Domann is not that promising QB and will not be the starting QB next season.

Malik's college career is nearing its end and he has had a terrific ride with some great career numbers. He is a all time top 5 Cards QB. Coach Satterfield, regardless if his job's are on the line, should refrain from desperate acts like putting Malik at receiver. So much could go wrong and there's other things Satterfield can and should do to get the two wins necessary to become bowl eligible.

Realville: I do not disagree with a single thing you just posted in this thread.. My point has not been about “Malik making a position change”, but rather using Malik in the slot, WR or even lined up in the backfield where he has a chance to receive the ball in open field, or just be a decoy that draws the attention of the defense.

Trick plays seldom work, particularly when the defense has a week to prepare for it. I am sure most everyone would agree that what we witnessed against Pitt was definitely qualified as a trick play, but it’s success was not so much about confusing the defense, as it was about getting Malik the ball in open field.

I totally expect Malik to start at QB this afternoon, and it is quite possible that he could have one of those amazing performances, much like so many that we have witnessed over his career at UL. However, if our offense struggles in the course of this critical game, I expect there will be opportunities where Doman will be called in for some snaps, and I further expect there will be every effort to get the ball in Malik’s hands from either the slot, the WR or in the backfield.

Satterfield no longer has the luxury on letting Malik play poorly. If he struggles you will see Dohman because he has shown the ability.

Wake defense isn’t super aggressive Malik should have a clean pocket most of the day. He should play well.

Stoops’ success at UK strikes me as a bit more satanic in nature.

It was built with easy of conference and recruiting. Now that TN, FL and SC have found coaches it will be interesting to see if they can maintain.
