shore things up? that's what practice and pre-season and scheduling cupcakes are for. obviously practice must be loose to allow this to go on in a game. Saban, when he coached, would run a play until the team got it perfect, then he'd run it several more times before perfection was ingrained. i have a feeling our coaching staff runs it once and expects that memory to sink in, and not all the previous times they've failed. the 5th game of the season is not shoring up time. sadly, bad coaching leads to bad in game performance.
