Big Game Tonight

Overtime whew!!! I thought it was a good move to have 2 bigs in. The 4th quarter they have been killing us down low.

One thing is certain- UND passes the ball FAR better than we do. That has created some very easy shots for the irish.

All defense in overtime nobody scoring let’s hope our defense stays strong and theirs doesn’t. This is very stressful I hope we can finish this game the way the other 3 quarters went with us on top.

Makes no sense. He doesn’t play Josie at all in the second half and then puts her in, cold, in OT. WTH?

Game over.

How can anyone deny that the Louisville basketball programs are cursed in 2022/23? There's no way that shot should have went in. She was falling backwards and didn't follow through at all.

CC had a good game but it seemed like she wasn’t looking for her shot in the 4th quarter or overtime.

Louisville is going to turn the ball over. They play risky offense and it's just part of who this team is. They looked like the best team all game and it took good fortunate for ND to win.

However, part of that good fortune is Louisville missing layups. I counted 5 tonight and I could include two missed and 1 opportunities. Instead of 3 points, we scored 1. ND made all their layups and made their FT'S.

This team has little room for error and it seems like most of the time, the other team is fortunate enough to just win. That's why I call it a curse. The Cards didn't play a perfect or a excellent game, but they played hard and focused and would have deserved the win.

But apparently this season is a payback season against the Cardinals.

Never put tight pressure on ball handlers after crossing mid court. Allowed easy entry to their bugs against our small lineup. Can't allow their size to get into the paint so easy. One big playing with three under 5'7".

I think we need at least one more consistent scorer. HVL and CC are going to get their points we need another double digit scorer. I really did like the effort tonight the bigs went hard for rebounds. IC looks like she has been working on the layups. We have to realize every team we play is going to give us their best shot.

We definitely are a top 25 team but being unranked could help us in the tournament. Some teams will definitely overlook us. I was wanting us to so badly to win this game tonight so I could see the talking heads and the announcers eat crow.

I have to disagree with you on Citron dominating HVL. Citron had 15 points 11 came in the first half, HVL had 19 points half came in the first half the other half came in the 2nd half. ND assigned Citron to guard HVL and Louisville assigned HVL to guard Citron. Every time HVL and CC had the ball if they made a move to get a shot they were double teamed.
We are just a third double point scorer from being a better team. I thought OC did better on layups I think she only missed one and she made a couple heavily contested.

Dominated is a strong word. However, HVL for the latter part of the game was held in check by, primarily, Citron. HVL’s ‘issues’ come from pressing too much to make things happen. Yet, if your teammates are not getting it done she doesn’t have much choice - so I give HVL some leeway in regards to some errors or questionable shots. My beef (and I stand ready to take the blowback) is the decision to put Josie in the game in OT. I knew she’d ride the bench in the second half even though she came in and was productive late in the 1st half. WHY bring her in cold like that? Olivia AND Liz had both been playing pretty well in the 4th. They had been active on both ends of the court. It made zero sense.

These Lady Cards played well enough on both ends of the court to win this game, but the officials followed a pattern that is inherent with games played in South Bend. I think it was Bardman who pointed out the reluctance to call the obvious fouls on the Irish …… it was the difference in the outcome during the last few minutes of regulation and even more pronounced in the OT.

Cochran was clearly fouled on her last basket, but no call; which was preceded by a similar foul called underneath on Cochran at the other end. There was an even more critical no call on Miles when she charged before passing to the wing for the wide open 15 foot Irish score. The official was right behind that play and refused to blow the whistle and it occurred at the most crucial time in the game as it tied the score.

Yes, HVL was fouled earlier underneath and that no call was just another example of the officials controlling the outcome.

Walz wanted Josie's height out there and since she played well in the first half, he went with her again. She's not a freshman, she's a 5th year player. Had she made that 3 pointer, you would be saying what a great coaching move.

She in no way caused the loss and is part of Walz's deep team. It was the missed layups and missed FT's and the lucky game winning shot by ND.

Walz has a lot of options to choose from and he liked how Josie was playing. It made sense to me like it did benching Kono when she was reluctant to shoot.

Morgan Jones must put too much English on the ball because she misses more layups than she makes.
She releases the ball too soon at the wrong angle and the ball comes off too hard off the backboard. I think she could get to the rim anytime she wanted if she learned how to finish or at least get fouled.

Not putting the blame on Josie but responsibility on Walz having her in the game at the end and not Cochran. I get it Cochran has underperformed lately but putting Josie, who yes is a 5th year senior, but she also has not played in these close games at the end over Cochran cost us at least the potential of 4 points. Two points where she had the ball but couldn't secure it resulting in a TO and then on the next possession, ND went right at her and she couldn't stop the ND player from scoring. I think it was Watson, who ended up as ND's leading scorer who was able to get at least 2 successive inside scores. Then the next time down, Cochran comes into the game. Hopefully Olivia realizes this and the next time in that situation she'll be in the game. We will see.

That was nothing against Josie. I wish she had been put in during the third and fourth quarters. If she was playing so well why didn’t he play her earlier? Again, Inwish he would have. Playing her in OT when the other two posts were warm and had been playing well made no sense. Whether she made her shot or not - would not have changed my opinion.

I just think that's nit-picking. Josie is part of the rotation and Walz is a recognized successful coach. He believed she would help like she did in the 1st half. He's done this all season because he has a deep roster. It's not like he put Mobley in the game. A freshman with very little playing time. That would be questionable.

With everything that happened in this game that ultimately led to the Cards losing, having Josie in there late is not anywhere close to being a key factor. The ND player Watson, had scored over Cochran and Dixon all game. Josie is taller than both and Walz put her in. I see nothing wrong with that and it didn't cost the Cards the game.

Hind sight is 20/20 but if I would have done anything I would have locked down Miles and Citron. They are the most prolific scorers for ND and they are their go to players. We will be more prepared for that when we play again in Louisville. All this being said it was a great game and it was very entertaining.

I agree with Bardman on this. I'm pretty sure I have watched most of the women's games this year and I can't remember Josie playing many minutes in at the very end in close games. Granted this might have been a decision made by CJW because of Olivia's ineffectiveness of scoring lately but IMHO against ND on their home court was not the time... Hopefully the team learned something from the loss.

Josie was brought in by CJW as a result of witnessing ND‘ effectively defending and clogging up the inside and making Olivia ineffective.

Jeff wanted Josie to do exactly what she did ……. move outside and either attract the defense with her, or provide an open look for the 3.

It was a shot that Josie has hit with regularity and if she scored at that point, it could have changed the outcome. If nothing else, had she hit the 3, it would have accomplished the intent by forcing ND bigs to move out of the paint and guard Josie, which in turn would have provided HVL an opportunity to drive in the lane. ND had taken that away.

Exactly! Josie is part of the rotation so when Walz brings her in, it's a decision that he believes will help the team. Again, it's not like he put somebody in who rarely plays at crunch time.

That 3 she took was the plan and had she made it, no one would be complaining. She just rushed the shot knowing that's what she was in there for.

Everything in that game that led to the loss, her being in the game at that time was not one of them.
