Big 10/ACC Challenge

I believe the ACC finished 4-2 last night. I do not see this as humiliating, but rather more as disappointing. Duke losing at OSU was unexpected, but I suspect BIG fans did not expect to go into Chapel Hill and lose by 19 points either.

When you see several games going into multiple OTs, and several more of the games decided by 1 point …….I think a more objective analysis would indicate the two leagues are actually pretty close to one another.

ACC won 3 games after I stopped paying attention. The ACC is still bad. Big10 probably a little overrated too.

Maybe the ACC programs are simply victims of their past success.

That said there's no doubt this league is just down right now. FSU and UVA have really fallen off this year. Louisville isn't close to their standard. UNC is a question mark. Duke is certainly doing well despite the loss. Va Tech might be decent. Syracuse has already been kicked around. The rest of the teams look bad.

Big10 has Purdue looking like a monster. MSU, Iowa, WISC, tOSU look solid. Jury out on IU and Illinois they may be blah. Michigan massive disappointment. Rest of league kinda blah. Sure. I see 5 strong teams here. Just not seeing the ACC on equal or near equal footing.

I would be careful putting too much weight on the power of either conference, as the BIG’s 8-6 advantage would suggest that it was actually a rather even split, separated by one ACC loss that might have gone another way.

My observation over the years of witnessing these inter-conference challenges like this most recent one, is that most often the results are more about the matchups and who was the home team. If UL and Duke played those same opponents at home, rather than on the road, the results could have flipped in reverse.

The ACC a may not be as good as it has been in the past, but I would wait until mid season before rendering any prediction.

Sure you are more than welcome to wait that long.

Note, at that point league play has started and people may think they see improvement that isn't really there (sound familiar, football?) it could just be down programs playing against down programs, somebody's gotta win.

The question is, what ACC programs are performing to their standards ?

The answer is, the majority of ACC programs are performing well below their traditional (UofL, SU) standards and/or their recent standards (FSU/UVA). I won't get into dumpster fires like BC and Pitt. UNC beats an overrated Michigan they have been ok, I guess. But they were backing up at end of Roy's tenure and who knows with the new coach.

What Big 10 (or any other power league) programs are performing to their standards?

The answer here is, many are performing above their standards.

It was like this last year, so the question really is, is this a trend or anomaly type of thing.

One can also look at the AP and Coaches poll where ACC has 1 (Duke) rated in the top 25 # 1 and the Big 10 has 4 teams with Purdue ranked #2. Outside the top 25, you go through 4 Big 10 teams, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio St and Wisconsin before you get to the next ACC team, Florida St., which hasn’t performed to early expectations. I would say that top to bottom Big 10 is a stronger conference.
