Has Louisville ever won a National Championship without an injury to a key player?

Not wishing injury on anyone, but with Hicks and Snider out our bench is being thrown into the fire and will be tested.

There are no more players to reach for on the bench. We are down to bare bones.

Come tournament time, this team will be tough to deal with.

I'm going to say the answer is yes.

Kevin Ware.

EDIT: Misunderstood your question. Thought you were asking had UofL won a national championship after suffering a injury to a key player

Yeah,I think Rodney moved into his spot, although maybe moving to the center spot later. They could've ended up side by side before season's end, much like they would eventually.

Different take but we may not have won the 1986 NCAA championship had not Milt Wagner get another year after suffering a broken foot in 1985.
That is my point. We have never won a National Title without an injury.
ln the same manner Milt was given an extra year, Mango has an extra year this season.

Would be nice to win a title on Mango free throws. Vindication actually.

If mangok takes the free throw line to win the national championship my heart will come out of my throat before I see the ending.

McSwain hurt his knee and missed 10-12 games if my memory serves me right.

Walls was a bust due to the knee injury. If you watched him play in high school and then at Louisville there is a huge difference.

Good call on McSwain. That sounds familiar, but he did come back to contribute in the tourney.

Absolutely right about Walls. We were expecting big things before that knee injury. I cannot recall when it happened, but I feel like he played some relief minutes that year. The injury killed his quicks, I do recall that. He was a first team HS AA.

Funny, here is one thing I found online about the 1984 HS AA team. It was published in 2002 about their then current status. I believe we were highly involved with all 5, but got only 1. I know Williams committed, but recanted after Dale Brown gave him a reach around. I think the other 3 gave us a stong look and were close to committing. Look at those names:

John Williams Crenshaw,
Los Angeles LSU Plays pro basketball
in Spain

Danny Manning Lawrence,
Kan. Kansas Plays for Dallas
in NBA

Kevin Walls Camden, N.J. Guilford (N.C.) Correctional officer
at Riverfront State Prison
in Camden

Delray Brooks Rogers, Mich. Providence Lives in Grayson, Ky.

Chris Washburn Hickory, N.C. N.C. State, owns mortgage business in Dallas

Washburn was an absolute beast. If I remember correctly again, that was our last loss of the season in 86 when Washburn and NC State lit us up at their place.

We may look back on the Mango injury the same as we do the Milt injury.

Having never won a championship without an injury, could this season be the 4th installment of a Cardinal Championship?

Loved watching Herb Crook on the 86 team. McSwain was a key contributor as well. Speaking of injuries, if Jerome Harmon had not injured his back, could have been one of the best ever to play at Louisville. I believe he was a freshman during 1989 season.

I think Jerome was a prop 48 kid so he lost a year there. He was a Sophomore in 89/90. There was always tension because he didn't want to go to class: Left after one season and wasn't drafted.

His 15-20 baseline jumper was deadly and watching him fly through the air was something to see.

Word on the street was Crum appointed somebody to make sure he got to class and it didn't work.Dude just wasn't cut out for structure,a shame indeed.

I wouldn't call walls a major injury. We had Jeff hall and Ice. Walls was considered a bust IMHO.

Walls was a bust "because" of the injury. Blew out his knee. Part of the Camden Connection, Walls scored 81 points in a HS game.

That was a very big factor.

Having The Ice Man for a fifth year was the biggest factor.

kevin walls? was one of them
Kevin Walls played in the title game.

The injury in 1986 was Robbie Valentine. Robbie had torn it up in the summer league and was expected to contribute major minutes, but his tendinitis flared up again shortly after practice started in the fall.

I saw Robbie at the Regional last year and said, "You look like you could still play." He smiled and said, "I wish!"

I'll be honest, I've never heard Robbie Valentine and tearing it up in the same sentence. Robbie was the human victory cigar. Great team guy and everyone likes him but I find it hard to believe he would have ever cracked the rotation in 86.

I understand your point, but Robbie was considered a huge get when he signed. Unfortunately, tendinitis dogged him his whole career. Jock Sutherland always said Robbie would have better served by going to Western where there wasn't so much talent ahead of him.

OTOH no one thought Herb Crook would play as big a role as he did, keeping Kimbro and Payne from starting, except for Herb Crook.
