Balanced Roster

We’re pretty solid across the board except for depth at a couple of positions. I’m looking forward to the season for the first time in a while.

Depth is always going to be an issue. Louisville is going to have to develop players. The transfer portal is a crap shoot but the staff has to make sure they don’t miss.

The thing about QB is there will always be a good one in the portal. The problem is what you can build behind the main guy. The days of 4-5 stars or really good backups waiting their turn are over. I think Johnson is redshirting will be good but if Clarkson wins the battle he will probably transfer.

This is their best roster since arriving. They have guys across the board that have produced at this level. There really are no excuses this year. This is purely on coaches getting their guys to make plays.

Brown and his staff are especially on notice. 4 years in the kids should know the system. They need to be Top 50 in total defense. They do that 8-9 wins is possible.

I gotta say that at the end of December, 2021, I thought we were dead in the water for the 2022 season, especially after then AD Tyra decided to keep CSS. My outlook has changed…. A lot!!!! New coaches, transfers and future recruits have turned me around. Also, have been re-watching some of last year’s games and believe that defensive improvements will make a huge difference in our outcomes. Can’t wait until first kickoff!!

This roster is much improved on the defensive side, but depth is still a concern. It has been stated repeatedly, but if we can avoid injuries, this season could be special. The most encouraging news that I am hearing, is that Dez Tell is challenging Lole for the starting spot. I do not believe anyone thought that was possible heading into the Fall.

Gotcha beat! 57 years a Card fan! Prior to that 9 years a Cat fan. Went thru Trans Surgery.
cat fan til 14...... My older bro was a U.L. Freshman in '71 and took me to both fb an bb games that year - conversion complete! (I was in East Jefferson Co. attending historic Kentucky Military Institute as an 8th grader ( it's last year of existence ) I am the Youngest former student that attends the bi-annual reunion in Louisville lol)

I think--maybe best read as "hope"--we look to have upgraded in the secondary through the Portal. Brownlee comes with some of the same list of sins being thrust into service at Florida State as a freshman that Chandler Jones has, but with a reputation as being more physical in run support. I am encouraged by what is said about the vocal nature of Momo and Montgomery together, because a tandem of Middle linebackers with that as a quality is a very underrated intangible. If we heard the same thing about a safety that would be tough to beat, like having additional aerial reconnaisance along with ground recon. As with all preseason hopes, sometimes I'm as guilty as being optimistic because of some perceived or reported intangible and have to wash the Momo and Montgomery reports of two guys who have had major injuries. I did like what I saw of Dorian Jones last year though.

I don't think the Lole news is too surprising; was post-Spring Practice wasn't he and also had a stretch where he had to sit out some practices with leg issues. Given he played sparingly last year I suspect conditioning was already a question mark.

It is pretty hard to get a good read from fall camp. Coaches have talked up players before that just didn’t match up with on field results. Last fall they really talked up the defense. It was a big disappointment.

Depth chart is hard to evaluate. Jones gets the start. He is ok but he isn’t a great cover corner. None of the back end guys are transfers, which the staff raved about all fall camp. What tea leaves are we supposed to take from that?

I guess I don’t trust the D-coaches because whatever they discuss in fall camp doesn’t play out that way. I think I am more concerned now than I was before the depth chart was released.

I agree, I think CSS just wasted a year by not firing the DC., although , he may have put Brown on notice after he hired McGriff so that if he has to send him packing the D is still stable.

Is Tell that much improved, or has Lole failed to measure up to expectations? ……for me that is a huge question. We simply cannot be successful if we have another year where our NT is dominated in a 3-4, or both DT struggle in a 4-3. The staff expected Lole to contribute a lot.
