Rawle Alkins has likely had worse games, but this clunker came at the wrong time - and in the wrong place - for the former Christ the King star.
Playing with his new team, Word of God Christian Academy of Raleigh, N.C., in the Big Apple Basketball Invitational at Baruch College on Monday, and in front of St. John’s coach Chris Mullin and Louisville’s Rick Pitino, Alkins scored 11 points, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists in Word of God’s 87-80 loss to South Kent, Conn.
“It’s very disappointing,” Alkins said. “I’m very disappointed in myself. I didn’t play my game. I made the crowd silent. I let my teammates down. I’m very disappointed in the way I played today.”
With Mullin and Pitino watching and chatting with each other in the stands, Alkins played about 28 minutes and missed seven of his 12 shots. He had two points after the first half. He denied, however, feeling any extra pressure to perform well in his hometown as two of the more prominent coaches pursuing him watched closely.
“No, not at all,” Alkins said when asked if jitters played a part in his subpar performance. “I had terrible game. Eleven points may be a good game to others, to me that’s not good enough. I hear the overrated chants, I see some of the crowd storming out and that’s my fault. They are coming to see me and I didn’t preform.”
Alkins - who scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a loss on Saturday in the same event - built a reputation as a big game player at Christ the King, leading the Royals to three straight city titles in his time at the Middle Village school. He was forced to leave the school over the summer because of an eligibility issue stemming from varsity games he played as a freshman in Florida.
Those Florida games were also the reason Alkis was not selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game this spring since the event does not allow fifth-year players to participate. “I knew I wasn’t going to make it,” Alkins said.
For the same reason, it’s likely that Alkins will not be eligible to play in the Jordan Brand Classic at Barclays Center on April 15, which means Monday’s game at Baruch was likely his last in New York City this season.
Of course, St. John’s is still one of the schools Alkins could land with, but for now he’s disappointed he couldn’t make a better impression in the city this weekend.
“It sucks that this will be my last showing here in the city,” he said. “It’s tough right now to think about it.
“I am trying to develop a huge following and when I play like this I realize I still have work to do,” he said
