Long time lurker, used to post years ago as "OCCard."
Modern basketball has changed. A lot. I realize that. More dribble drive, more pick and rolls, etc...
Here's a stroll down memory lane.....Neither Milt nor Jeff were point guards in 86. The back up was Kevin Wall, who despite his high school accolades, wasn't very good in college. Never seemed to recover from his knee injury
Neither Milt nor Lancaster were point guards. The back up guard with them was freshmen Jeff Hall.
Nor was Eaves
Siva and Russ were awesome. With Ware hurt, our back up in the FF was Wichita Tim. a zero star recruit.
Sosa and the asst coach that i won't name were guards. No real back ups. Jerry Smith was mostly a shooter, not a handler.
If El gets hurt we are screwed. 100%. If Milt, Lancaster, Siva, Russ, Eaves, Derek or Griff had gotten hurt we would have been 100% screwed.
I hate it that we whiffed on the portal. I hate it that DJ may be in blue. I hate it that it seems KP hasn't embraced NIL
Not trying to say our current roster compares to those players. But why not be optimistic this time of the year?
El-I think he will be really good.
Withers is certainly capable
BHH has shown signs of beast mode
Curry-I think is really really good
All accounts I heard last year were that Mike James was killing it when he got hurt
All accounts I have heard this year is that Lands is killing it.
Rose, Traynor and Ree-who knows?
By all accounts the staff loves Fabio, who has had a crazy growth spurt and people are calling a sleeper. Hercy, who knows-he and his dad seem like people good to have around-giving back to the community.
Maybe some or the portal guys were turds that would hurt chemistry. Let's see how it goes for them at their destinations.
Last year's team played in a stand around, hand off offense designed to beat people off the dribble with players that couldn't beat anyone off the dribble, other that El. They seemed to have chemistry issues and played 0 defense. I think all of that will be better.
Rip away at this. I'm still going to try to be positive and hope for the best.
