ACC Shakeup

Imagine how Syracuse feels. Their non-revenue teams travel to Stanford, Dallas, and Miami. That’s brutal. I think a much larger reorganization is coming at some point…though not soon enough. Right now the big money schools don’t care because they’re raking in money. Perhaps football and basketball will cleave off and the non-revenue sports can form reasonable regional conferences.

Can we dump SMU and Cal. And pickup Cincinnati and WVU
I'd almost keep SMU and their oil money and drop Stanford instead. Only thing they bring to the table is volleyball.
SMU has the potential to be really good in football. Cal & Stanford brings nothing but a few eyeballs to the ACC. Cincinnati & WVU would be a better ACC fit than any of the west coast teams. Getting rid of the California teams and replacing them with WVU & Cincinnati would make for a better ACC.

Cal & Stanford makes 0 sense being in the Atlantic Coast Conference
I agree. I initially threw SMU under the bus because the ACC made them our basketball rival this year (which makes no sense). We need better conference rivals and the California schools don't make the grade. WVU and Cincy would be much better for the ACC than the California schools.

Just like Oregon, USC and Ucla don’t make sense being in the Big 10. While they bring more athletic clout the fact they are in the west coast - it just doesn’t make sense. But hey, the NCAA has publicly stated that it is all about the student-athlete. So all of the teams traveling across country must be great for those student-athletes.

Stanford brings some good women’s programs that makes it interesting. They have really good volleyball and basketball in women’s sports. They had an average year in basketball this year but they are bringing in one of the top freshmen classes in the country next season. California is the one that has little to offer but I do agree I would rather have Cincinnati and WVU.

As of now I believe the ACC added the 2 California teams and SMU for more time zones.

People watch football and it makes money. The 10pm time slot is open and adding those schools means that ACC has games on from noon to midnight. The logistics make no sense and the programs aren't good right now nor are they big draws, but considering that we had no games and no viewers in that window, adding even crappy games is a gain for ACC/ESPN because there's no real competition in those time slots.

Also, SMU is the biggest gain for the ACC since the deal started.

SMU takes $0.00 in TV revenue. Last year they had 6 games on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC. They were ranked and in our title game. They didn't draw massive viewers, but they added more inventory of games. And they added more games FOR FREE. Not to mention, they got into the playoffs and got the ACC more money.

And this year as they'll have a little more hype and be ranked, meaning casual fans will see the number and remember they were in the playoffs last year and tune in. And again, we don't pay them any of our TV money.
