This is 5,500 fans or 25% below Bailout Arena capacity. I don't use twitter, but reportedly in the last couple of days, Eric Crawford tweeted that this was the lowest average attendance for men's basketball in 34 years. For many posters here, that's the lowest in your lifetime.

By comparison, women's basketball attendance this year is UP 25%--and also up 15% vs. two years ago (before "Vince" took over). Anecdotally, some of us believe that the women have taken advantage of the decline in attendance at the men's games. It's cheaper and arguably a better product...

“Zipp” - your contributions to the Senior Day thread were terrible and I don’t know why you are so bitter. Carry on....

All this really means is the bandwagon fans fell off. Once coach Mack gets his kids in here and starts winning games at the highest level, those 5K plus bandwagon fans will come rushing back to their seats. The only variable is time.
If that's true, I'm not sure we don't need to debate the definition of "bandwagon".

Consider that 34 years brackets more than a decade when Bill Olsen was AD. And it dates back to U of L's 2nd championship under Crum, including all of the problems he had in the latter half of his career, and almost as far back as the Freedom Hall renovation, ca. 1985 IIRC. For good measure, throw in Ring Road and cow turds.

Stunning...

No. I went to the thread to reach some finality with the thread you derailed but soon found that it had been locked. If you want to diss VJ or any of the other non-seniors then simply create a new thread. Really no need to trash a Senior Day thread with your negative agenda.

imho, too many people still loyal to tj that haven't returned. and not enough faith in winning home games yet for everyone else. had we held on against duke, those numbers would have been over 17,000 but that gut punch reminded everyone last year of the UVA ending and i think people have just said wait until next year to show up for games. if at the end of next year, the numbers are the same then time to realize the times have changed, but since so much local turmoil, many fans are simply tired of the drama and need a break. i personally think we'll get back to 19,000 average next year

I participate on many topics. Surely you don't need evidence. But this issue ain't about me...
Your m.o. is purely political and financial matters regarding our university. Rarely do I see you post in game threads, I’ll go ahead and cue in your “well it’s hard to post because I’m at the game bs rebuttal”. Multi-tasking must be hard for you. I’ll also go ahead and cue in an irrelevant deflection from you regarding where I live, and how I can’t attend as many games as you, or so you say..

Do you have anything to contribute that's on topic? I welcome reading it...

Oh, the sweet irony. By all means continue your banter, my work here is done. I’d rather talk about our team. See you in the next thread that takes a stab or potshot at the administration, and how it’s everyone else’s fault aside from the people whom were fired on account of their own personal agenda/actions.

Zipp, was this sold or scanned numbers?

I was wondering when this question was going to pop up. If you go to any games, you can tell there’s just not as many fans attending. Also it doesn’t take me as long to get out of the parking garage that it used to.

Is it really that shocking that the program that just went through 2 major scandals, got wins vacated, sat out one tourney, got upset in the 2nd round in the next, had a coach fired, went to the NIT, had the AD fired, and then had everyone saying that this team would be terrible in the preseason had down attendance? 16K is still a really good number comparatively speaking to the rest of cbb. This season was the 1st season since everything really hit that fans actually had time to show disappointment with their money. Going into last year, the hammer dropped so late in the year that most season ticket holders had already paid for season tickets.

Wbb is on the upswing and hopefully it keeps the fans it gained after mbb is back.

Freedom Hall on its best day could be stuffed with a shade over 20,000 'standing room only' fans. That doesn't mean every game had 20,000 in attendance. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching the Cards play in Freedom Hall but you know as well as I do that FH didn't average anywhere close to its 18,000+ advertised seats sold for the 34 years you speak of. Great years for sure, but lets keep this real.

Better product? Please.

Attendance is a topic everywhere. Even the head kitty Brainfart is ripping out seats this summer and reducing capacity at corrupt arena.

What’s comical is that “zipp’s” boy Tom put a bunch of seats in Cardinal Stadium we can’t fill. The millions would have been better served to build a second to none football complex. That would have helped football better than empty seats.

I think this post hits the nail on the head concerning attendance. Men's basketball is coming out of a set of singularly bad problems, and it's very likely that that the attendance will improve next year. Meanwhile, women's basketball is on a significant upswing, for which the AD and the athletic department deserve some credit.
