Transfer portal

A healthy Knap is definitely an MLB draftee. His speed, combined with having consistently demonstrated an ability to make contact with a wide range of pitches secures his future.

His future is at 2nd base, but I suspect that if he returned to UL, Mac would keep him at SS for the sake of the team. I sure hope that he returns, but I do not expect to see him here next year ……hope I am wrong.

Knap is good enough SS for college but not the MLB. I'm sorry but that's what I've seen in his three years here.

Just look at all the great position players Louisville has had the past decade and how there's only a couple that has made it to the show. Knap isn't anywhere near as good as those former Cardinals.

Look, I hope I'm wrong. I would love to be wrong, but I don't think so. I just can't see how he would be a high draft pick because he's a singles hitter and an suspect fielder. He should definitely stay in school.
Sure he is projected as a MLB 2nd baseman but that doesn't mean staying at U of L will make him a better draft prospect. IMHO, he has hit (no pun intended) his ceiling and coming back another year could hurt his draft potential not help it. I'll trust the scouts to know a little more about Knap's draft potential..

I also think Knap returning to UofL would not help his draft status. However, we have no idea what his plans are. Maybe he loves baseball but has different intentions so coming back makes sense for him. My guess is he wants to try a pro career.
** On a note regarding the transfer portal. Has anyone seen any other notices of players entering the portal?

Personally, I agree another year of college won't enhance his draft chances, but I could be wrong. When I said he should stay in school I meant from the perspective that he isn't a high draft choice now. If he came back, played second base and had his best season ever, he then may get drafted higher.

However, he would probably stay at SS and that would do virtually nothing to help his draft positioning. If he comes back it's probably because he loves the program and the college experience. If he enters the draft, he has a lot of work to do plus he will get a nice check.

One MLB mock draft has Knap as the 37 pick (2nd round) of the Cleveland Indians. What if Knap gets hurt again like he did this year? He's not a first rounder even if he stays another year.

I still refer to them as the Indians. The movie Major League will always see to that.

I find it incredible that Knapp would be taken in the 2nd round, but who am I but a fan who has watched him play 90 percent of his games here at Louisville?

That would be awesome for him for sure so I hope I'm wrong.

Can’t disagree. I think he is a really good college player. Somewhere in the top 10 rounds due to his hitting and speed alone. Top 2 rounds, to me, is a reach.

INF from Marist (Hoy) apparently is joining the Cards. I think he is a GT and possibly a defensive guy. His plate stats are sort of ho-hum.

Premium board (not sure why Mods didn’t move the thread here) indicates a transfer pitcher from Lewis Univ (DII). Also, someone mentioned FR C Bamburg is transferring out.

So,I'm guessing that there is feedback that Knap could be gone.Add to that Smith transferring, there is a need for another seasoned infielder 🤷‍♂️

I would assume as much. Talent coming in; but, bring in someone with proven talent and experience. This provides insurance at a minimum.

Like most other sports transfers are easier to project. There aren’t many freshman that can handle ACC level pitching out of the gate. I believe hitting is a 2-3 year learning curve. If they can’t figure out by then they need to transfer.

Hard to get excited about what they have brought in so far from the portal.

You could see this coming. Would expect to see a couple more from the portal too IMO.

There better be a bunch more if we want to catch back up with the rest of the ACC for next year.

The catcher looks pretty good. The IF Hoy appears to be very good defensively and has potential offensively. Just don’t know about the one pitcher. Not sure why D1, P5 and mid-major players are not getting picked up.

I doubt U of L is offering NIL money. Not sure if that puts us at a disadvantage…
Sure it does if we don't start changing the way we think about pitching. College baseball offers the fewest scholarships per player of the 3 major sports. With NLI money, teams can offer players, especially pitchers more opportunities. Also, you will see college baseball follow in the footsteps of MLB with analytics playing a greater role. Starters going 5-6 innings and then turning the game over to relief specialists and then to the closer.

It may for a couple of guys but you aren’t going get real NIL money to 13-16 pitchers. They have always carried 13-16 pitchers that isn’t changing. Look around the country there are pitchers everywhere. Hell guys at Oral Roberts have legit arms. Campbell has a legit Friday night guy.

This is more about missing on guys they brought in.

Without saying it publicly, I think that's probably how McDonnell feels.

He's different than Walz, and you have to read between the lines with CDM. He wants to use NIL money to supplement scholarships. I know that he doesn't see NIL and the transfer portal as strategic to the baseball program he wants to run. He's said as much...

I do not know any of the details surrounding Tommy White's transfer to LSU, but his impact at NCST made it evident that he was "a game changer"; something he demonstrated last night. Again, just speculation on my part, but I suspect NIL explains where LSU is right now, as well as where we are right now.

Could be, and I try to keep an open mind on that issue. I don't know enough to do otherwise.

My tact is to just remind people that I don't believe McDonnell agrees with that or at least the last part ("where we are..."). And he's the guy running things. We're likely to find out, good or bad...

I tend to agree. He may be doing it this way because he knows he can’t compete against for the elite guys in the portal. I don’t think that is going to change unless the Louisville community decides they want to be elite in whatever sport.

LSU who can basically get whomever they want out of high school has a coach actively telling all high end transfers come to LSU. It is a completely different approach. It is why they are playing for a title. They got the best transfer pitcher and hitter plus other key pitchers from the portal.

It will be interesting to watch but I think he is going to get burned with sticking with High School players and development instead for going hard in the portal. It is a huge gamble on his part.

Despite not having won an NC, I believe that pre-Covid, pre-NIL & the exponential increase in transfers in College Baseball ............ UL was considered "elite". I by no means minimize CDM getting us back to competing head to head with LSU, WF, Clemson, etc., just concerned about the talent level that I see right now.

Just saw that. Not overly surprised. He had a few good moments. His defense was suspect though. With McCoy there and then whatever FR coming in it was probably a good decision.
It was said they were interested in adding a 1B through the portal so I’ll be interested to see if that comes to fruition. I know they were linked to a big time one from Wofford (Ryan Galanie) a few weeks ago but haven’t heard anything on that since

Kinda thought Cook was a guy who fit the bill in this system- third year guy gaining confidence with his play and CMs confidence to use him. @ Bardman, I think he felt like he needed to be playing every day somewhere being he's gonna be a Junior. You're correct, it probably wasn't gonna happen behind McCoy.

Cook is returning.
Yeah, that makes more sense. Glad to hear it. He's basically a second year guy who's been here for his third season coming up. We have several guys that are primed for big seasons. Now get all the arms where they can compete at the highest level. We might have something.

Ethan Patera, RHP (FR) hitting transfer portal. Now, go get that pitcher from Tennessee.

Apparently TN doesn’t either.
Yeah, I'm starting to see the comparison to what smaller market MLB teams are battling, going up against these programs with deep pockets.
Welcome to the new and not-so-improved version of college baseball.
Expect to see LSU and the like to be regulars not just in the CWS,but crashing the finals.😧
Seriously, we need a partnership with Louisville Slugger.

How long before a cap is placed on NIL for each school? Should already be in place. But, again, those who are going to cheat would just circumvent those caps. Lose-Lose situation.

BOOM! Here ya go! Weekend starter written all over this transfer. Sebastian Gongora, LHP from Wright St. Horizon pitcher of the year. Went 10-1, 3.17 ERA. Source: Matt Sefcovic.

I think there is a Moneyball aspect to this whole thing NIL and transfer world. Analytics are going to play a big role in building a rosters. They don’t need a ton of transfer because of how they recruit at high school level. They need key transfers.

I like this pitcher they added and wouldn’t mind 1 more like him. Lower level Friday night starter.
