The University of Louisville basketball team began preparation for its Puerto Rican trip next month with a double-session of practice on Monday at the KFC Yum Center practice facility. U of L coach Rick Pitino said the two players who stood out on the first day were fifth-year senior transfers Trey Lewis and Damion Lee.
University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino spoke briefly to the media on Tuesday following his talk with campers at Robbie Valentine's Basketball Camp at the KFC Yum! Center.
And after one day of practice for the trip to Puerto Rico next month, Pitino was very pleased.
"I'd say they're in good shape," Pitino said following Monday's double session of practice.
Pitino said his team would make use of the 10 extra days of practice by going double sessions on each day prior to the Aug. 10-17 trip to Puerto Rico. The Cardinals will play nine games in six days on the trip.
"We're going to spread it out so we don't have a lot of injuries," he said.
Pitino will also have the Puerto Rican National Team in Louisville training. He will coach the team in an Olympic qualifier in late August after they play against his U of L team for a week.
The two fifth-year transfers - Damion Lee and Trey Lewis - were players who "stood out the most" in day one. Pitino also said freshmen Ray Spalding led the team in deflections.
"He had the highest number of deflections in the practice and you don't often see freshmen accomplish that," Pitino said of Spalding.
Pitino said his U of L team will practice from 8-10 a.m. each morning before the Puerto Rican National team will go for a session. He will then bring his U of L team back in before a final session with the national team.
The Hall of Fame coach said it would then be: "film, dinner and pass out."
